donut··on Show HN: Dockerfiler: declarative management of images built from Dockerfiles
> shipping on five year old containers that everyone is afraid to update and no one remembers how to build them.

That's bad. This is not the way to do it. And honestly, this isn't the fault of Docker, Kubernetes, Rancher, or any tech. Sounds like the org is broken...

I'd love to see this unpublished book, if possible!

Maybe you're right.

But did you know there's a Go font?

donut··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
I remember Silicon Toad's page. Lots of cracking software, docs, etc.

The good-looking textured light-sourced bouncy fun smart and stretchy page

Inspired a lot of learning about graphics.

donut··on Magical, Mystical JavaScript Transducers
Impressive amount of code and words. I think I'd think twice before approving this in a code review, though.

Why is this not the obvious solution to the stated problem?

  function avgPopularity(slang) {
    let sum = 0;
    let count = 0;
    for (item of slang) {
      if (item.popularity > 0) {
        sum += item.popularity;
        count += 1;
      }
    }
    return sum / count;
  }

donut··on Datasette Facets: Faceted Browse and a JSON API for any CSV File or SQLite DB
Nice. Looking forward to trying this out.

Reminds me of http://openrefine.org/.

donut··on Why SQLite Does Not Use Git
> Git encourages a style in which individual developers work in relative isolation, maintaining their own branches and occasionally rebasing and pushing selected changes up to the main repository.

> Fossil, in contrast, strives to keep all changes from all contributors mirrored in the main repository (in separate branches) at all times.

donut··on Show HN: Simple image resizing/optimization service
Nice features and presentation. Looks great.

But those aren't URLs. Do you document how images are retrieved, http or https?

donut··on Site Reliability Engineering
This essay talks about the difference between thinkers, doers and janitors.

http://multithreaded.stitchfix.com/blog/2016/03/16/engineers...

In it the difference is erased and people are reorganized in a, I think, more productive way.

donut··on A Git query language
It's the UNIX principle/tradition that line oriented text is the universal format. It's quite flexible. But I share your feeling, and I keep hearing nice things about powershell.

Also, if you work with CSV files, look at textql.

donut··on Nintendo's SmileBASIC for 3DS
Thanks for this background. I would've loved to have something like this when I was growing up. I'm sure I'd enjoy playing with this today, when it's released in English.
donut··on Nintendo's SmileBASIC for 3DS
You're right, my apologies. I saw (c) 2011 Nintendo in the footer, and thought it was by them. Upon closer reading I see that SmileBoom Co. Ltd were just acknowledging use of Nintendo trademarks!

Can someone edit the title to be "SmileBASIC for Nintendo 3DS"?

donut··on Microsoft Small Basic
That does look pretty interesting. Here's the english-language page with examples: http://smilebasic.com/en/

Wish I had this when I learned to program :-)

Edit: and this hilarious video with english subtitles! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgnAmLwtP6Q

donut··on IBM System 38 (1984) [pdf]
Nice.

I recall writing REBOOT.COM myself by using EDIT.COM and writing two bytes (0xCD 0x18 by typing Alt-205 Alt-24, if I recall right) and saving it. That executes interrupt 0x18 which should start the BASIC interpreter in the ROM. But most PCs didn't have one, so instead it rebooted. I discovered this by experimentation :-)
