dontcontactme··on Chimpanzees in Uganda locked in eight-year 'civil war', say researchers
I don’t consider myself politically correct but this headline is outright racist
dontcontactme··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2024)
What makes you say it's spam? Genuinely curious. If the job openings haven't changed, is it spam to post the same message in multiple threads a month or so apart? Or is there something else I'm missing?
dontcontactme··on DoorDash raises minimum pay to $29.93 per hour in NYC
Interested in how they count hours - are the only hours counted the hours where you are actively picking up / delivering an order? Or are employees also compensated for time spent waiting/looking for orders?
dontcontactme··on Early-life stress changes more genes in the brain than a head injury in rats
In rats, not humans. Interesting nonetheless
dontcontactme··on A currently maintained fork of SSHFS
sshfs is no longer maintained? That's sad, I used sshfs in school to be able to use my zillion vim plugins to edit code without having to install them all on the remote server we used for compute. I was surprised with how smooth of a system it was.
dontcontactme··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you learnt or got out of Hacker News?
my friend, CO2 is a natural part of the atmosphere and is emitted from your mouth with every breath you take. Carbon monoxide (CO) is the dangerous gas that you are thinking of.
dontcontactme··on Will AI obliterate the rule of law?
The term you are looking for is modus operandi (not operandus).

Modus operandi literally means "manner of working," so you want the genitive of operandus (operandi) because the genitive in Latin corresponds (roughly) to the english preposition "of."

dontcontactme··on Apple Card’s new high-yield Savings account is now available, offering a 4.15 p
CIT has two options:

Savings Connect [1]: 4.50% APY, no minimum balance, no fees

Platinum Savings [2]: 4.75% APY, min. $5000 balance to qualify for APY, but once you qualify 4.75% APY on whole balance (not just balance above $5000)

I use the savings connect personally and am considering whether or not I want to open a platinum savings account.

dontcontactme··on Apple Card’s new high-yield Savings account is now available, offering a 4.15 p
Decent but there are plenty of higher yield savings accounts out there
dontcontactme··on Show HN: Yobulk – Open-source CSV importer powered by GPT3
"Open source tool powered by closed source API" Is it really open source then?
dontcontactme··on Poly-time algorithm for deciding Hilbert Nullstellensatz. A proof of P=NP
It's difficult to trust self-published, non-peer reviewed papers on arxiv. You can just as easily find papers claiming P=/=NP

dontcontactme··on Ask HN: Which coordinate system is better for a beginners programming language?
consider polar coordinates. reject cartesian dogma.
dontcontactme··on Why we ignore thousands of daily car crashes
Another factor is that people are more afraid of scary things when they feel like they can’t control them. Driving makes people feel like they are in control, which makes drivers underestimate their chances of crashing. This is the same reason that airplane crashes and autonomous vehicle crashes are also huge news events: if people feel like crashes are being caused by something they can’t control, that scares them.
dontcontactme··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
I think most people use an adblocker to avoid seeing ads, not privacy. Most people (myself included) care more about saving time on YouTube videos and making webpages not have pop ups all over the place than privacy.
dontcontactme··on Lisp in 99 lines of C and how to write one yourself [pdf]
It says 99 lines, and it theoretically is, but is it really 99 lines if it has 119 semicolons?

In the main function,

   nil = box(NIL,0); err = atom("ERR"); tru = atom("#t"); env = pair(tru,tru,nil);
This should probably be 4 lines of code, but it all appears on one line in the source code. '99 lines' of code is technically true, but using number of lines as a measure of code complexity becomes less useful once you start packing multiple distinct things into one line like this.
dontcontactme··on Plano man keeping Blockbuster alive
I think there’s something to be said for the interaction involved in getting a recommendation from a human. An AI might recommend movies just as well as Dave did, but you presumably like Dave and enjoy talking to him about the movies you’ve seen. You don’t get that part of the experience with an AI recommendation.
dontcontactme··on A look at search engines with their own indexes (2021)
What are these search engines that focus on sites without advertising and trackers?
