"Upon this, one has to remark that men ought either to be well treated or crushed, because they can avenge themselves of lighter injuries, of more serious ones they cannot; therefore the injury that is to be done to a man ought to be of such a kind that one does not stand in fear of revenge."

I wouldn’t read hacker news for romance advice.

I know someone who posts here who would complain loudly and repeatedly they couldn’t get a date.

I tried to offer to take them to one of the gallery showings I used to go to, and was like dude I don’t have a girlfriend either but I don’t talk about it loudly in the lab.

He told me I’d had like fifteen girlfriends since we worked together and after a bit of a puzzled back and forth since that was… the kind of rumor I’m not gonna deny but also entirely inaccurate.

Eventually I realized he meant that so much as inviting someone over for tea once and having it not click was a “girlfriend” to him…

And when I kind of laughed, said he’s too metric’s obsessed and he should come to an art exhibition rather than keep posting about how horny he is on Reddit, he just went on a long rant about how modern art isn’t art.

Anyways sorry for the long winded story but “women” aren’t really some species to be studied, just like men, they want someone who’s kind, who shows a sincere interest and (this is the part that seeks to trip up you people) someone with a sense of humor.

Try just finding a hobby like film or art and someone will eventually take you up to the roof like it’s that one episode of Mr Robot ;-)

Sorry last I was logged in it was upvoted.

How can I express the above (no lawyers) wo bumping on the guidelines?

Maybe I’m not understanding how you define “personal attack”.

I appreciate the gesture but I’m actually not sure it’s useful to read articles like this - the cops just do whatever they want. Constitutional law is a useless thing to study under the Gorsich(sp? On my phone) court.

The way it is now, if you set things up they have nothing on you legally, they move to questioning your sanity.

I actually just had someone try to send a crisis team into my home out of false concern because they couldn’t engineer an excuse to send the police.

It’s worse in a way, since there’s less case law about that than interactions with the police.

(With an added bonus that now my neighbors think I’m insane since that interaction is very visible, and on my end I feel like there’s a set of people who have zero incentive to let me be independent and healthy when they make more money if I’m in their care, to the point I’m considering emigration since I always was happy outside the USA and most of these behaviors and interactions don’t happen to me in places like London, Paris, Amsterdam etc in the past… not just because you are on holiday but because it’s truly a different, more respectful culture and I regret not getting on a plane before these thugs extorted my emergency fund away then started bullying me.

Couldn’t you require someone to cite/add as a coauthor the day collector?

When I was a paid by the hour lab assistant I was added as last author on the papers I assisted with since I sat in on meetings and sometimes flagged protocol design errors so we’d be able to use what we collected.

(But that was HCI, more of a social science akin to psychology , hard sciences seem less collaborative)

dontbenebby··on Does watching pornography cause erectile dysfunction?
How will you define pornography? People are aroused by what’s forbidden- ban or strictly regulate say, nudity, they’ll eventually seek out crap like the Sears catalog with the same… energy.
dontbenebby··on Does watching pornography cause erectile dysfunction?
I suspect the real issue is often untreated diabetes or other cardiovascular stuff… that’s how they discovered viagara back in the day - they didn’t go into a lab intending to create an ED drug.

> Those running the non-profits may do better than the workers.

I know.

I was nearly violently assaulted by the CEO of my NGO when I pointed out they justified our patltry salaries by the fact we’d make approximately the same on the GS scale while the higher ups made multiples of what POTUS did (which iirc is towards the far end of the bell curve for government salaries).

(Hacker protip: Don’t stand in a doorway, raise your voice, then police the response.)

dontbenebby··on It sure seems like Elon Musk is purging left-leaning Twitter accounts
Speaking as a member of the “dirtbag left”, there has always been separate and unequal treatment for those of us who pair the aggressive posting style of folks who talk so derisively about an invisible man in the sky as they demand as much or greater reverence for an alleged invisible hand in the market.

The core issue is having it ambiguous who can break the rules and when, married to a purposefully inadequate set of reporting tools.

(For context, I actually interviewed to do UX research on anti-abuse features at Twitter back around the time of the 2016 election, and they declined not only to hire me but didn’t fill the role at all… I remember because it was the same day as the Turkish Coup attempt.)

Anyways Elon is terrible but it breaks my heart since Twitter is a good way to discover new news sources / articles in a way unreplicated by Reddit (which has its own… special… issues.)

dontbenebby··on Ask HN: How to overcome stage fear / social anxiety
I was briefly a child actor, but left that world to focus on developing tools and techniques to fight some of the horrible people I met in that space.

There is no replacement for practice… make a slide deck or script and practice it repeatedly, to the point you barely need notes. This will take 10-40 hours for a 30 minute presentation. (Spaced across multiple weeks - you will increase the chances you bomb your talk if you attempt on short notice)

Then practice it in front of someone, and edit the copy until someone who is not an expert in your domain doesn’t want to ask clarifying questions.

Then practice another 10-40 hours until you’re as comfortable as you were prior to trying it out on a test audience.

You might spend 20-40 hours practicing per 30 min of speaking initially, but eventually you’ll get to a point where that ramp up period will get much shorter.

The above, paired with some improv classes and purposefully letting yourself bomb a few open mics will get you to a point where not only will you advance your career, you’ll be so persuasive you may not care if you have one due to all the side quests you go on with the enraptured folks who come to you after your lectures :-)

I looked back at an old diary - I was using it in Linux because my office had a Linux desktop. I never bothered installing it on my laptop because I tried to keep anything from work off my personal devices.

(Both it and GIMP should make macOS native clients like how the KeePass ppl did KeePassXC)

dontbenebby··on Ask HN: Are Protonmail.com Addresses Snubbed?
Have you previously interacted w these folks?

A user might mark you as spam in their client if they perceive you as engaging in unwanted marketing especially if they’re unclear where you got their email.

And proton was one of two preferred clients the hurtcore folks liked back when I was learning about OSINT + favored by a few other really rude sets of people so it’s absolutely possible especially if you have one of the newer non dot ch addresses.

Do you have a trusted friend you can try emailing to test?

What exactly are you emailing about?

Sorry I might be mixing it up with a different app - they may have been just… easy to switch from adobe in terms of the the ui making sense.

Sorry I misspoke it’s also been years since I made a vector logo :-)

dontbenebby··on Inkscape 1.2.2
Thanks! Inkscape is a wonderful project, I've used it for years - I started around the time those jerks at Adobe took CS into the cloud, and unlike GIMP, I found the UI fairly intuitive if you've studied graphic design AND it played well with the OSX windowing system instead of trying to use GTK or KDE or whatever the hell... the stuff I see when I open up GIMP to slap impact font text onto the images I take with my personal cell phone.
dontbenebby··on Play Windows Pinball (Space Cadet) on the Web
This brings back memories!!

You can also play Pinball in Word 97:

>1. Open a new document

>2. Type "Blue"

>3. Select word

>4. Go to Format -> Font

>5. Choose Font Style Bold, Color Blue

>6. Type " " (space) after word "Blue"

>7. Go to Help -> About

>8. Ctrl-Shift-Left click the Word icon/banner

>9. Use Z for left flipper, M for right flipper, and ESC to exit

I got banned for a spell from the library computers in middle school because they had a "no games" policy. I think in retrospect, the real concern was random young men like myself, fresh into puberty, loading up the machines with god knows what, but of course they lacked communication skills to express that (hence becoming a sped librarian), so instead we got into a (metaphorical) pissing match that ended with me banned from the computers for... well I think it was allegedly six months, but they lasted about a week before they realized if I stopped asking their informal IT questions, they'd have to bring in an extremely expensive consultant, caved, and let me back on if I promised "not to install games" -- and then we got into pretty much the same argument yet again when once again my shortbus was late, and I tried to sit quietly playing pinball since saying anything out loud risked someone engineering an excuse to put their hands on me and deviate my septum again.

(In case you can't tell from the tone of this post, I'm still raw that when I had Bill Goddman Lichetenstein blowing up my burner email, all I did was do a cutesy unpaid "it gets better" essay for Boing Boing rather than waste my 20s on STEM policy only to find out all I had to do is tell a crowd "Why do we tolerate Mike Doyle and his weird little sex cult" and they'd have a crowd outside Peduto's house in less time than it takes to watch an episode of prestige television.

(It doesn't get better, BTW. Maybe in Seattle or whatever, but if you're a queer, autistic millennial in Appalachia, you need to make some people think every system around them, electronic or physical, might fail if they don't do what you say in order to get them to treat you with the same deference and respect they give elderly pedophiles who control so called civil society.)

Anyways, sorry for the wall of text -- here's a link on how to play pinball in word 97, if you're into that kind of thing:

https://eeggs.com/items/763.html

(But if you attach that box to the net, someone might pop it, since Windows 98 or whatever is no longer receiving security updates, and Mark Zuckerberg and his tech bro cronies have the consent model of a frat boy -- if you don't opt out, they think they can do whatever they want.)

>passwords

isn’t there some law about trading stolen passwords?

I’m a fan of easy to type passphrases designed to spark a riot if ever read in open court since this seems to be a common pivot from the “look the other way when the user types” model I followed when I worked a help desk. We were told when I moved on to Hci research it’s unethical to collect the passwords, there’s a whole cottage industry of academics analyzing leaked data sets since they aren’t allowed to… just ask.

(I’m not Irb certified and not a professor, so I get to do whatever I want.)

dontbenebby··on Reminder to check what your previous salaries were, adjusted for inflation
What previous salaries? I’ve had a perpetual issue folks would only connect me with cleared roles or nonprofits, then had violent toddler like reactions when I pointed out as COVID fell I’ve never had a security clearance and could get on a one way plane ticket with my galaxy brain and Star Alliance points.

I’ve given up on using my technical skills and later this week plan to try to find a local restaurant where dishwashers get tipped out because I lack customer service skills to save up for emigration.

dontbenebby··on Tell HN: DuckDuckGo now has anoying popup
The search engine is good but I guess they are having income issues since they keep pushing these McAfee style products and patterns.

They’re useful more as a way to divert tax revenue from California to PA, my home state, which has been run roughshod by anti tax ex tech bros for too long, than as a suite of products in the way MS or Google offers.

(I keep having to fall back to Bing for some types queries they’re better at slapping together a bunch of existing things than creating their own algorithms, spidering etc… but the bang commands are useful and a lot of IAs allow you to do an opaque query over HTTPS like calculate a sha256 hash that some users lacking terminal access might not be able to do locally.

>There was substantial support staff to take care of scheduling, handling mail, reimbursements, and other non-billable matters.

I know many a phd student or professor who use freemium apps to handle that, at the expense your travel itinerary is now marketing data.

Not a great thing, especially when agents of foreign power will do things like show up in your hostel to pump you for “business intelligence”.

Americans don’t get much vacation, if you bother us in the hostel common room it makes us want to do a”social experiment” where since the EU has no death penalty we drown you in a Dutch canal and see if they give us a 1 bedroom with a PlayStation like they did Anders Brevik, not tell you the inner working of our NGO.

(For context, it’s my understanding since there’s no death penalty for espionage anymore, paired with no EU wide intel agency, many EU folks sell secrets back to the “motherland” - usually France or Israel - for money… to the point it’s basically decriminalized.)

dontbenebby··on Judge finds no rights violations in FBI seizure Beverly Hills safe-deposit boxes
I very briefly dated someone whose brother was a police officer when I lived in DC, and prior to grad school I was encouraged to consider law enforcement by the very field office I’m complaining about a little over ten years prior to this thread.

I find your comment condescending considering it’s in reply to an admittedly emotional rant stemming from the fact my local police failed so thoroughly in their mission it made an FBI agent’s eyes go wide and say they’d open a civil rights investigation.

(Though maybe they were more focused on the fact I also very bluntly said “I’m not a Russian spy” and listed off the people making want to re-enact the scenes from the hit HBO television series “The Americans”.)

Being a police officer is less risky than say, a construction work flagger, but people feel coerced into giving them unearned respect since a construction work flagger can’t misunderstand on purpose and shoot you dead if you don’t kiss their butt like they’re an aggrieved military officer in 1930s Germany they will lie through their teeth and not follow through on their claim that they will do their damn job.

Please pick up a copy of “Rise and Fall in the Third Reich” and get back to me before replying again because I think you have no grasp of history.
