donquichotte··on Forget Bribery – The Real Scam Is Pretending That Degrees Have Value
"When something is both expensive and of no practical value, it’s clearly intended as a means of wealth transfer."

Interesing, I had the same thought about expensive artwork.

donquichotte··on Plastic buckets, broken printers shine light on Hanoi's poor (2016)
So they are using the motors from the printers as generators.

You still need to rectify the voltage to store the energy in lead acid batteries, losing precious voltage in the diodes. I wonder how they get the >13V to charge the batteries.

Power output is probably <10W average.

donquichotte··on How Inuit parents teach kids to control their anger
I thought the same thing, especially since alcoholism is a problem with many Inuit communities [1] and alcoholism and domestic violence often go hand in hand.

donquichotte··on Mark Zuckerberg Promised a Clear History Tool Almost a Year Ago
Also, the "View As" functionality has been "temporarily" disabled months ago because of a security issue, never to appear again.

"View As" was a vital tool to assess what data is shared with whom, and guarding one's privacy is harder without it.

donquichotte··on Great Wall Motor unveils $9k electric urban car with nearly 200-mile range
The motors yes, but the power electronics components in motor controllers, MOSFETs and IGBTs, have a notoriously short life, especially if heavy power cycling with short t_on and t_off occurs.
donquichotte··on Elon Musk's tunnel project is a bad joke
I would love to see this project succeed, but it seems to me that a combination of European and Asian style hi-speed trains (TGV, ICE, Shinkansen etc) with massive tunnel projects like [1] are the way to go here.

donquichotte··on Dad and the Egg Controller
It certainly is an amazing approach.

One of my former co-workers was a physicist who knew LabView and he used it for everything from parsing log files to sending automated emails.

donquichotte··on Crowdfunding Backer Patented My Project
Looks like somebody in the patent office hasn't done their job, the prior art list is overwhelming.
donquichotte··on How to Design Software Good
Beautiful!

I would pay for a book with more anectotes of kafkaesque, nightmarish visions of horrendous programs.

donquichotte··on Drug cocktail almost doubles lifespan of worms
I'm not a biologist, but wouldn't an immunosuppressant's "life prolonging" effects be negated in a non-petri-dish-environment by bacterial, viral and fungal infections to the recepient?
donquichotte··on China's GPS 'rival' Beidou
Exactly. At the moment, the consumers benefit from the increased accuracy and coverage provided by multiple GNSS.

Sidenote: the ublox M8 chips are a pleasure to work with, and there are variants that have IMUs (gyros and accelerometers) on board for sensor fusion. All for <10$. What an exciting time we live in!

donquichotte··on Looking Glass, a revolutionary window manager revealed in 2006
I agree. In terms of fancy visual effects and CPU usage, I prefer my window manager at the opposite end of the spectrum, e.g. i3wm.
donquichotte··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
The Kawasaki KLR 650 and the Suzuki DR 650. These make great, reliable long distance adventure bikes suitable for almost any terrain.

You may argue that these bikes are still in production, but in Europe its all but impossible to lay hands on them due to EURO5 emission norms.

donquichotte··on A kinda okay text generator
A nice experiment! I am always a bit surprised to see that CNNs & company produce much less coherent and natural sounding text than the comparably simple Markov Chain generators.

That said, I markov-generated some text with Nietzsche's "Also sprach Zarathustra" as a source some time ago and it made more sense and was more coherent than the original.

donquichotte··on A new book about Nietzsche: tethering philosophy to the mess of daily experience
This has to be one of the rare cases where there is shorter, wittier way than Oscar Wilde's to make the same statement: "Do as I say, not as I do."
donquichotte··on One man designed and built the ultimate bush plane
Insane timeline indeed! I wish I had a work ethic like that. It's interesting how he tells that as a child, he was encouraged by his parents to "always finish his project, no matter how much you disliked it".

I wonder what the reliability of this beast is like, but I guess only time will tell.

If anyone is interested in this kind of stuff (fiberglassing fuselages, building cockpits...), Peter Sripol, a model plane enthusiast, made his own DIY plane that can carry a human with hobby grade brushless motors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNSN6qet1kE

donquichotte··on Study Finds Increased Incarceration Has Marginal-To-Zero Impact on Crime
When in an ideal world, the justice system would be a tool to minimize the negative impact that the set of individuals and corporations that do not follow a set of agreed apon rules causes to the set of all individuals and corporations in a society.
donquichotte··on Annoyed by Restaurant Playlists, a Master Musician Made His Own
This reminds me of a bar I used to frequent that had an electronic jukebox. It was quite the redneck place, and the music was accordingly heavy. Every once in a while my friends and I would go to the jukebox and select a full length record of Concierto de Aranjuez that lasted like 25 minutes. It toned down the raunchy atmosphere and made the place quite enjoyable.
donquichotte··on Ask HN: Got a CS degree, but I’m unable to be programmer. What can I do?
> the rest is breaks and hn reading

and, of course, writing HN comments.

donquichotte··on The terrorist inside my husband's brain (2016)
What a harrowing experience for everyone involved. Coupled with financial difficulties, this could be the worst nightmare imaginable.
donquichotte··on Qt for Python available at PyPi
I just tried fman and it is quite impressive. Fast af and clearly (?) inspiered by Sublime Text. Beautiful!
donquichotte··on People in these countries work the longest hours according to OECD
In some cultures, napping during worktime is also common. It may even show that you are a dedicated, hard worker, getting some well-deserved rest.
donquichotte··on Napoleon as Organizational Designer (2009) [pdf]
My thoughts exactly. This is a 40 page high school essay.
donquichotte··on Police search homes of Zwiebelfreunde board members and OpenLab in Augsburg
Fun fact: the police found a "3d printed, bomb shaped object" and put it into an evidence bag with the label "offence: causing an explosive blast". The object can be seen in action here:

donquichotte··on Booze, Sex, and the Dark Art of Dealmaking in China (2015)
Maybe it is you. From TFA:

"“The more guys, the less safe the girl is. When there are other men in the room [for sex], it’s like the men are competing with each other, and they get rougher, so the girls can get really hurt.“"

Not much need for bigotry to see that if people get "really hurt" in an inter-company bonding event, something must be wrong.

donquichotte··on Below the Surface – Finds from an archaeological project in the River Amstel
It's striking how disposable the newer plastic items look compared to pre-1930 items, which are made mainly out of ceramics, metal, glass and wood.
donquichotte··on Darpa Literally Reinvented the Wheel for Army Combat Vehicles
In reliability engineering, the failure rate for a complex system is the sum of the individual failure rates of its components [1]. I will let you do the math.

donquichotte··on Darpa Literally Reinvented the Wheel for Army Combat Vehicles
Hi, if you're interested, I have a blog at [1]!

- more or less at random, it is IMO one of the more interesting routes you can start in Europe, opposed to e.g. the Panamericana or BAM.

- not really, I just wanted to explore the world (and still do, haha)

- Maybe 2/3 of the time was spent riding, the rest of the time I spent exploring places and waiting for visa.

- all three of them!

donquichotte··on Darpa Literally Reinvented the Wheel for Army Combat Vehicles
As a guy who rode a motorcycle from Central Europe through Central Asia to Mongolia, the last part largely off-road, I wholeheartedly agree.

Simplicity is key. As a traveler, if your "wheel 4.0" has a software bug or breaks down in the middle of the desert, it is inconvenient enough.

I can only imagine the consequences this would have in a war scenario.
