donpdonp··on Zig monthly, October 2021: Games, gamedev, Elixir, tools and more
Also consider https://vlang.io/ - its similar to Go with some new ideas.
donpdonp··on Apple is building the metaverse substrate
HYPER-REALITY from 2016 is a very well done imagining of that AR advertising dystopia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJg02ivYzSs
donpdonp··on Gleam 0.16 compiles to JavaScript
The similarities to elm make this language intriguing. What I'd really like to see is a compiler in webasm that compiles Gleam code to webasm.
donpdonp··on Email Explained from First Principles
This is like the Encyclopedia Britannica entry for 'email'. I wouldn't call it "from first principles", I'd call it "a survey of everything related to email and email delivery" (propane and propane accessories).
donpdonp··on Why Learn Prolog in 2021?
"The Power of Prolog" is a youtube channel for learning about Prolog https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFFeNyzCEQDS4KCecugmotg/vid...
donpdonp··on Open Source Smartwatch
Using the recent infinitime OS v0.9, I get 2 to 3 days of normal usage per charge.
donpdonp··on Open Source Smartwatch
I have a pinetime and the form factor is great (until I lost the back plate, next one will be sealed). All the opensource activity around the watch is also great. The biggest drawback to me is only 64k of ram. Thats a Commodore64's worth of ram. The 240x240 screen is 57kbytes, it must have its own display ram.

Also NordicSemi never seemed to be particularly opensource friendly. I'm hoping for a future RISCV edition of this watch with more ram.

donpdonp··on Magician-turned-mathematician uncovers bias in coin flipping (2004)
The method to get fair flips from an unfair coin is interesting and was recently on hackernews. say a coin is heads(H) 70% of the time. that means it must be tails(T) 30% of the time. If you flip it twice, and calculate the odds of each pair of flips (multiply the probabilities) - HH 49%, HT 21% TH 21% TT 9%. The middle two outcomes are equal probability, aka a fair coin. So ignore HH and TT flips and use HT and TH as Head and Tail of the 'fair' coin.
donpdonp··on The original "Spacewar!" running on a virtual DEC PDP-1
I've never played so this is fun to see how it works. There is a lot of opportunity for strategy - good replayability.
donpdonp··on QBE vs. LLVM
QBE https://c9x.me/compile/ "QBE aims to be a pure C embeddable backend that provides 70% of the performance of advanced compilers in 10% of the code"
donpdonp··on Libgen Storage Decentralization on IPFS
The linked article does not introduce the project, nor does the project site have an about page. wikipedia to the rescue!

donpdonp··on You don't need no service mesh
I bet there's an answer inside the ORB.
donpdonp··on Show HN: LibreASR – An On-Premises, Streaming Speech Recognition System
The README could use a section as to what CPU platform and storage requirements are necessary to run this app.
donpdonp··on Precise Higher-Order Meshing of Curved 2D Domains
After some skimming of the paper and googling of terms, I'm going to take a whack at an ELI5 (note I have no special domain knowledge here): Some fields such as GIS or CAD are given a polygon and need to represent the interior area as a 'mesh' or set of triangles in order to perform certain operations on that interior. The current approach to building a mesh gives an approximation of that area where the method in the paper gives a mathematically exact representation, which is a 'big deal' where accuracy counts. Corrections welcome.

Fry: Hey, professor. What are you teaching this semester?

Prof. Farnsworth: Same thing I teach every semester: The Mathematics of Quantum Neutrino Fields. I made up the title so that no student would dare take it.

donpdonp··on Bevy: A data-driven game engine and app framework built in Rust
Here's a writeup comparing Specs (Amethyst sub-project) and Legion ECS. https://csherratt.github.io/blog/posts/specs-and-legion/
donpdonp··on Bevy: A data-driven game engine and app framework built in Rust
I'd like to see how it compares to https://github.com/amethyst/specs, a rust-based ECS engine, for use in the multiplayer voxel world game Veloren (https://veloren.net), or https://github.com/TomGillen/legion
donpdonp··on DEF Con 28: Safe Mode
I agree its hard to find things on that page. These links might help:

donpdonp··on Google ends plans for smart city in Toronto
$50M and two years later - where are the conclusions? The results? A blog post of what happened? Two years seems like enough time to say we tried some amazing things and this is how it did or did not work.
donpdonp··on A Tour of Standard ML
Very clearly written, easy to consume, easy to navigate. Thank you for this!
donpdonp··on Building a walkie-talkie for remote work
It would be easy to describe pragli as a conference call that never ends, but I'm not sure thats fair. Its one of various forms of telepresence, like a video wall or telepresence robot. If text messaging has taught us anything is that a chatroom is the right amount of distraction most of the time - until the VR workplace apps come (soon).
donpdonp··on Unintuitive JSON Parsing
Its possible the parser was laid out to choke on octals as a way to protect the 'standard'. Its one decision to not support octals, and its another to make octal-style an error so those numbers are not parsed as base10.
donpdonp··on GPS Is Going Places
All these "things" GPS can do involve the satellite signals being received by very specialized equipment, not cell phones which arguably the title implies.
donpdonp··on An opinionated approach to GNU Make
.ONESHELL is a huge help, and replacing the recipe tab is very interesting. Great post!
donpdonp··on Dented Reality: Magic Leap Sees Slow Sales, Steep Losses
That sounds like buying with extra steps. I agree its a flawed comparison but still interesting
donpdonp··on Dented Reality: Magic Leap Sees Slow Sales, Steep Losses
Exactly. We never got the Magic Leap. I remember reading that surgeons were already using the tech so it 100% existed and just needed to be productized. I figured google-ers had taken a close look and had a pretty good idea about how to productize it. Maybe it is worth a billion, I thought to myself. What we got was a Hololens clone. It should be called the Magic One because there's no technological Leap in it.
donpdonp··on Dented Reality: Magic Leap Sees Slow Sales, Steep Losses
Magic Leap One has been for sale for 6 months. At $2.6B in total funding, thats $433,333 per unit for 6,000 units. The sticker price is $2300 per unit.

By comparison the Nintendo VirtualBoy was for sale for one year at $180(in 1995/$300 in 2018) and sold 770,000 units[1].

donpdonp··on Show HN: Space Invaders in C
Thank you for posting this! Me too! I was at a local arcade and came across a real/original spaceinvader cabinet and I was floored at how much of the experience is not captured by an emulator on a laptop. The silvered screen layer is very eye catching and the sound - so much bass really adds to the experience of the dropping invaders.
donpdonp··on Biometric YubiKey
Sounds like a creative new way to get locked out of your own keys.
donpdonp··on Why UTC is used as the acronym for Coordinated Universal Time
I knew the French were running things on the standards end ever since v.32bis. Having it be one or the other seems better than neither of them. When selecting imperial or metric, we don't start using a feeter (half way between a foot and a meter).
