donor20··on Apple's reluctant, punitive compliance with regulators will burn its goodwill
This undervalues I think what Apple has delivered vs Microsoft and Samsung/android et so.

With windows you will be spammed in various tailored experience ways through notifications and search, random apps come pre installed on windows pro and the list goes on. Android comes packed with blostware and remote managers backed in from others to force / silent install crap. Cancelling payments can be a nightmare.

Apple is playing in part a long game. Dial back the crap to dial up the trust. Long support periods. Easy subscription cancels. The list goes on. Then they squeeze folks hard cost price side to make up for that for sure.

donor20··on IPv6 Excuse Bingo
Having made some major efforts with ipv6 makes you appreciate ipv4 - a few visionaries built something that worked amazingly well. Kind of mind blowing that the experts out there on committees came up w the dumpster fire of ipv6 - the pain of can be seen everywhere. And I still can’t get a static IPv6 block as easily as an ipv4 block
donor20··on Samsung extends Android and security updates to 7 years
The proof will be in the pudding.

The headline does not restrict this to specific models. I’ll be impressed if they actually update old models. If it’s another go forward promise - I’ll be a bit skeptical until they actually deliver for a bit.

Apple historically (with no big announcements I’m aware of) has an actual history of pushing updates - iPhone 6s from like 9 years ago still getting updates

donor20··on He spent his life building a $1M stereo
Ahh - makes sense - high amp cables get insanely expensive
donor20··on A drought has forced authorities to further slash traffic in Panama Canal
You can cross fill and use separate storage - their new locks already use this - but my understanding (possibly wrong) was old locks may not have been using all possible options - it’s a cost / benefit trade off
donor20··on A drought has forced authorities to further slash traffic in Panama Canal
One note - they don’t pump water out and back into the locks from a neighboring storage. They flush the water. Each ship needs like 40 million gallons?

Maybe title should be insane wastes of water forces authorities…. :)

donor20··on Apple hits "all-time high" smartphone market share, takes #1 spot for 2023
The other phones cos need to build up better reputations. It’s a slow process I think. No carrier mobile service manager. No bloatware especially hard to uninstall bloat like Facebook on Samsung devices. Better spam control - iMessage blue bubbles have low spam and good spam reporting. Easy subscription cancellations. AppleCare equivalent- saved me when traveling - went to an Apple Store and bam, new phone. History (not promises) of supporting devices for longer periods with os updates. Some of items on my list.
donor20··on FedEx launches new e-commerce platform
I’ve sold, worked with real (not dropship) businesses that sell and a customer.

As a seller going through multiple channels if you are selling books for example - Amazon basically pays - many bookstores slow pay, even distributors can get way behind and require lots of phone time. The trade is that it’s all on amazons terms. Same thing with fulfillment- many sellers complaining have never actually run a warehouse and done pick / ship. I don’t doubt complaints by sellers are valid, I just wish Amazon dialed down the marketplace side because it’s too full of junk for me

donor20··on What I learned selling my company
Startup stock can get diluted to hell during a non amazing acquisition. So founders and key staff (3-4) sometimes get a deal structure that rewards them for doing a year or two at buyer
donor20··on What I learned selling my company
They do take backup offers. We got our place that way. We didn’t want to beat the winning bid, but had a no contingency offer. We let them know if first fell through we’d still be interested at our price with a quick close. Someone missed some deadline and they were quick to call.
donor20··on He spent his life building a $1M stereo
Can you tape the ends red and black in this case? I thought there were some provisions for options there in case you had some super heavy cable but wrong color
donor20··on FedEx launches new e-commerce platform
Funny how the article talks about Amazon using contractors - at least around here FedEx ground looks very similar staffing side - but article didn’t mention that
donor20··on FedEx launches new e-commerce platform
Anecdotally here fedex is the worst just for stuff getting stuck for crazy periods with no movement
donor20··on FedEx launches new e-commerce platform
I find FBA / the logistics side great. In urban areas they are running multiple deliveries a day and reliability / speed is crazy good. So I feel like they are delivering well there. Oddly it’s the seller / brands / marketplace quality that I wish they focused on more - even if that involved more brand cancellations etc. So my experience is that the Amazon logistics side is great but seller product quality often isn’t
donor20··on Statement regarding the ongoing Sourcehut outage
There is no chance of unlimited http even - otherwise startups would free ride that for their video sites etc
donor20··on Statement regarding the ongoing Sourcehut outage
every / Netflix / porn site etc would use the unlimited free http traffic service if they could. I’d start a YouTube competitor. At some point if you use a lot of bandwidth you will get a call. So unlimited http traffic is a lie. Heck - my guess if you dumped a few petabytes into New Zealand or similar with high term costs you’d get a call
donor20··on Statement regarding the ongoing Sourcehut outage
Unlimited free is almost always a lie.
donor20··on Postgres Incremental Backup
Fantastic! I’m assuming you can wal replay on the incremental to get right where you want
donor20··on Apple starts sending 'batterygate' settlement payments
Yeah, it’s weird. If you understand batteries you understand why they did this. iPhones last longer already and are better supported than many android phones so apple has a history with longevity in their phones
donor20··on Apple starts sending 'batterygate' settlement payments
I’m curious why apple didn’t just let folks turn this off if they were so upset. Their phones would have died and apple would get another sale. Make the turn off permanent- once opted out no going back. Off all the “gates” this one seemed a bit underwhelming
donor20··on Microsoft Copilot iOS App
Exactly- do these companies realize how annoying this stuff is? Same issues w volume licensed windows 10 - it comes w garbage. Everything you tough it seems gets stuffed w this crap
donor20··on Microsoft Copilot iOS App
Having just fought a vendor for months to cancel a service - how do others not realize that long term the apple approach that builds trust will actually pay off?

We had three people working to get cancellation done. Customer service / billing / tickets / emails and more. It was ridiculous. The only person who could cancel was a salesperson we’d never worked with who would NOT respond to calls and emails. And we pay this vendor 75,000+!

Every time windows pro jams “search suggestions” and other crap in via notifications and elsewhere I just roll my eyes

donor20··on Amazon allegedly resells damaged books
A returned unopened item can be sold as new
donor20··on AMD Instinct MI300X Accelerators
But nvidia isn’t pulling this crap. You don’t get one old version immediately dropped. So another choice is to use nvidia. And cuda support covers a large number of their cards. And event recent releases cover a good chunk
donor20··on AMD MI300X 30% higher performance than Nvidia H100, even with optimized stack
I really like that you can prototype on your own consumer level card - the rocm stack has not matched that historically and has over promised and underdelivered for years now.
donor20··on Intel CEO: 'The entire industry is motivated to eliminate the CUDA market'
apple did initially want to build on what they saw as the best fab - Intel. unlock the power Intel would bring for their phone. But they had some design objectives focused on user experience (power/cost) and Intel didn't see the value. Intel then scrambled to try and build what apple had asked for but without the software.

Nokia kept doing crazy hardware to show off on hardware side. But these old companies can't stop nickle and dimeing - so you'd get stuff w crazy drm etc. And software wasn't there or invested in fully.

donor20··on [dead]
Interestingly for open source is the statement by Redhat on the call that multiple leaders were terminated and held accountable for not following DEI guidance on hiring. Depending on political point of view either something to celebrate or something to be upset about.

What is interesting is the level of commitment at IBM to DEI. Focus was on getting white / asian numbers down and hispanic / black up? I didn't listen to full thing.

donor20··on Why does so much government tech investment deliver so little?
Having been through this two major reasons.

they never talk to users. Seriously it’s crazy - you think it’s bad in industry - govt is wild. A bunch of folks 10 levels away decide on things. They will literally never even do one click in a demo - it’s all paperwork based - so when in 10 seconds users can tell it’s hot garbage (ultra slow, ancient Java version required and all) it’s too late.

Sane developers are smart enough not to contract with the government. McBride principles compliance? Virgin redwood compliance? Race info on all staff. Ethnicity for all staff? I once escalated to city attorney a compliance requirement that we hand out an IRS form for a program that no longer existed (advance earned tax credits I think) and they said form still had to be handed out (because some political body had required it be) but we could tell employees who filled out the form it was for a program that was no longer in operation and we would not process the form. Multiply by 20. So you get compliance and other middlemen who exacerbate the first issue - the folks developing are super removed from users.

donor20··on WeWork Goes Bankrupt
They squeeze you on some various fees - you can rent an office, never use it, and be charged a 300 or 400 cleaning fee etc. you get charged a separate fee for access to coffee etc. pricing isnt online you work w a salesperson. Square footage is hard to find. I’m sure if you were very careful you could pick up on all this but not greatest
