dominicrose··on US- and Greek-owned tankers ablaze after Iran claims 'underwater drone' strike
By going after the regime I don't mean ground invasion but anything that helps reduce their abilities. Afghanistan would definitely be a bigger problem today if the USA let it play out.
dominicrose··on US- and Greek-owned tankers ablaze after Iran claims 'underwater drone' strike
The USA and Israel should've went after the Iranian regime a long time ago. What we're seing now is the price of procrastination and weak past presidents.

Imagine if multiple Western countries allied early to correct this regime (and not just with sanctions).

dominicrose··on Iran-backed hackers claim wiper attack on medtech firm Stryker
Trump and republicans are now all-in in this war and this administration can tolerate a huge amount of chaos if it allows them to keep winning. It doesn't matter wether Israel pressures the administration or not. I'm not confident that the regime will fall but I am confident that it will be put in its place internationally even if it means closing the iranian borders from the outside indefinitely. BTW the US and Israel are not alone in this war.
dominicrose··on Create value for others and don’t worry about the returns
What top players do in Age of Empires II:

They keep resources (money) at zero by spending them frequently unless they have something more expensive and more urgent to buy.

They are greedy because they want to pay the same amount (or less if possible) for better units (or upgrade them), which is why technology can be more urgent than creating more units.

They are very risk averse, but don't look like it. The more talented a player is, the more risky some of his decisions or actions may appear, but they're not riskier when you take talent into account. That being said, they do sometimes make very bold moves, even in tournaments, because they think the opponnent is not going to expect it.

Alright time to go back to being a villager.

Anyone else has this Apple shopping experience?

- look at the new "cheap" product/gadget

- look at better products

- choose a better product, configure it, add options

- don't buy anything, not even a PC or a tablet, maybe upgrade your old android phone

Is it a coincidence that Trump ordered government agencies not to use Anthropic?

IMO Windows phone design and Windows 8 Metro were too minimalistic and squared like this, but TBH the current version of Windows has nice design and you can customize the theme and other things.

The issue with Windows now is the unjustified delays and bugs. I think professional PCs suffer the most from bugs because my own PC works fine. Not sure it's completely Microsoft's fault, could be the company. Sometimes the problem can also be the hardware and it's also not completely MS at fault since many manufacturers can produce PC and at widely varying prices.

The documentation is also confusing, these labels don't make any sense.

Routing type (Android) / Routing algorithm (iOS)

- A classic* (Android) / Highway hierarchies (iOS)

- HH (Highway Hierarchies) x C++ (Android only)

dominicrose··on Windows 11 Notepad to support Markdown
If you want to make a joke, you can suggest it as a new feature from the parameters of Microsoft To Do. Seems like the only Microsoft app that doesn't yet have it... BTW it can be disabled in Notepad settings.

A compressor pedal was the best thing I bought when trying to imitate Mark Knopfler doing Sultans of Swing. Not only does it sound good but a fender with a compressor is also much easier to play than an acoustic guitar.

dominicrose··on IDF killed Gaza aid workers at point blank range in 2025 massacre: Report
Welcome to the Middle East. The Gulf War had 50x deaths on the other side. The repression of the IRGC against peaceful protesters had the same kind of imbalance. Its how governments assert dominance there.

Just look at the reaction of Iran's "leaders" to the USA's threat to attack them. They keep their narrative logic intact: we'll sink your ships, etc. These are fearless people who's power is derived from the appearance of power.

dominicrose··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
age verification doesn't work in favor of a tech corp like facebook as they will see some users leave, some because they don't have the age required and some because they don't want to do the verification
dominicrose··on I tried building my startup entirely on European infrastructure
Nice try by them but the Amazon is still a river and "AWS European Sovereign Cloud" is an oxymoron.
dominicrose··on US plans online portal to bypass content bans in Europe and elsewhere
A major porn site's reaction to France requiring age verification was quite funny, they replaced their content by complaints instead of implementing the verification. Liberty isn't always a good thing, allowing teens to simply click to say they're adults doesn't cut it.
dominicrose··on Thanks a lot, AI: Hard drives are sold out for the year, says WD
Everyone moved to SDDs or NVMe. If you're right, that includes manufacturers. HDDs still have advantages over SSDs for specific needs, like more reliable long-term unelectrified storage. It's also possible that the high price of SSDs made HDDs an option again.
dominicrose··on EU bans the destruction of unsold apparel, clothing, accessories and footwear
It always annoys me when shops have more XXL clothes than regular M clothes. Not destructing is good but why produce them in the first place? Sometimes it looks like they're not even trying to get logistics right.
dominicrose··on JavaScript-heavy approaches are not compatible with long-term performance goals
For most apps React is never going to be an issue when it comes to performance, unless you use it wrong or you use it for something that is not standard, like rendering fractals. It makes sense to analyse performance if your website is meant to reach absolutely everyone, like old smartphones. There's the issue that a single-page app can be bloated from the start, but that's also in the using it wrong category

dominicrose··on Israel used thermal and thermobaric weapons in Gaza?
If it's not outright propaganda AJ is heavily biased or misinformed, or at least it's my right to be highly sceptical of this source. I don't know if that's why the post was flagged or if it's just because it's not the right type of content for HN.

Wheter Sunni or Shia it seems countries close to Iran prefer the status quo to other options.

dominicrose··on Israel used thermal and thermobaric weapons in Gaza?
Yes you're right, always remember who writes the article and what their interests are.

AJ seems to be pro-Russia, anti-Israel, anti-USA, pro-Iran islamic "republic". The islamic republic is all about deception, cutting internet to the whole country and reopening it 3 weeks later heavily filtered.

I can never believe them or any of their allies.

dominicrose··on Show HN: I created a Mars colony RPG based on Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars books
There are varying degrees of capitalism, right? If someone thinks it's unfair that his boss earns 100% more than him, then maybe 50, or 25% or even 10% would be fair? Trying to flip an imperfect system upside down doesn't seem right to me.
dominicrose··on Show HN: I created a Mars colony RPG based on Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars books
While accepting that freedom of expression is important I just wouldn't recommend anti-capitalist fiction. Against totalitarism seems better.
dominicrose··on Show HN: I created a Mars colony RPG based on Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars books
Isn't that dangerous, to write about a fictional society that works while being based on ideas that don't work in real life?
dominicrose··on I now assume that all ads on Apple news are scams
A trusted company works with untrustworthy companies to scam clients.

That's either incompetence or betrayal of trust. In both cases, the only solution is to be careful, boycott and press charges when something is illegal.

One does not simply read a study Bible (2 million words) but if you do then this work of fiction will be easier to understand in comparison.

I'm not promoting or demoting any religion by saying this, I'm talking about the Bible as an old work of fiction, although to be fair, a study bible can be recent and even copyrighted.
