dollar··on Can I make it in SF?
You don't want to move to SF:

1. Expense. You are in a low tax, low cost, business friendly jurisdiction. Thousands of entrepreneurs are leaving California to start companies in Texas. In many respects , your situation seems ideal for entrepreneurship. A passive investment income with low taxes and living expenses is exactly what you need when starting a business.

2. Distraction. I lived 12 of the last 15 years in SF. Suffice it to say, it's not the city it used to be. There are thousands of so-called entrepreneurs in the city these days, most of them male and under the age of 25. There are tons of networking events where you can douche it up with other entrepreneurs, listen to VCs share their "wisdom", and generally waste your time.

If I were you, I would be looking a lot closer to home. Why not get a cheap student rental in Austin? There is a strong startup scene with plenty of time wasting networking, plus a very hip young town with a lot of attractions. Hell, you could buy a small place in town , and churn on startup projects indefinitely without scratching your savings.

dollar··on Beware the self-taught know it all
Arrogance is a disruptive personality characteristic whether the individual is an academoc or self-taught, and no one likes a know-it-all of any type. However, the behaviors you describe are extremely common among gifted and talented individuals, and are part of the reason that such individuals often struggle in the general student population (and real life). Often that talent, enthusiasm, and zest for sharing knowledge that these people possess is interpreted as arrogance. It's no excuse for the behavior - clearly quirky talented types must live in society - but it does mean that the education system should account for these individuals and help them down the road. But it doesn't. The system fails miserably in this regard, and the author of this article needs to realize he is part of the problem.
dollar··on Beware the self-taught know it all
I am absolutely overflowing with computer science PhDs from IBM, CA, and academia. I would give away 10 pompous entitled know-it-all Computer Science PhD types for just one single self-taught know-it-all. Maybe the real problem is that your over-achieving self-taught know-it-all types are unchallenged and agitated by your basic curriculum. Maybe the education system in this country is so abysmally broken, that professors waste their time criticizing talented students on the Internet, while those talented students sit unchallenged in boring basic classes they should not have to take in the first place.
dollar··on The world is socialist
All of the typicsl straw man arguments about roads and healthcare are nonsense. Rand believed that any way society chose to organize itself to benefit its members was perfectly acceptable, as long as that organization was rooted in individual freedom of choice, and not extracted from individuals with violence - the tyranny of the majority.
dollar··on The world is socialist
> Successful people consistently underestimate how lucky they are.

Meanwhile mediocre people consistently attribute other people's success to luck. As luck would have it, they are both right and wrong. I am a high school dropout who never went to college, yet I sold 2 companies in the last 2 years. Is my success just a matter of luck, or am I that much better than the average population. Maybe the answer is that neither are that important. What I can say for sure that I work harder than the average population, much, much harder. And that's my general problem with those who champion socialism, they never seem to want to work as hard as I do. Among ditch diggers, there are always a few men leaning on their hoe handles.

dollar··on HootSuite Raises $165M Series B
237 of the Fortune 500 is a powerful reality distortion field. I've been right (Zynga) and wrong (Facebook) before, the future is notoriously hard to predict. The fact that anyone perceives any long term value to software with banner features like "scheduled tweets" is supremely irritating. By the time this slew of darling me-too software startups are ashes, the early stage investors will have already extracted their return. In the end, I suppose that is all that matters. What is most irksome is that HootSuite is effectively crippled because Twitter terms of service will not permit them to develop features that are in incredibly useful, and they will sue companies that do (TweetAdder). HootSuites entire business is predicated on an amicable relationship with Twitter, but if the business delivers features that are truly valuable, how do they prevent Twitter from commoditizing them within Twitters native feature set? This strategy is incredibly naive, and it's destined to fail.
dollar··on HootSuite Raises $165M Series B
HootSuite is less than useless, as Twitter Terms of Service prohibit anything that might take eyes off of Twitter.
dollar··on I'm Slowly Losing My Mind
Word to the wise - just stop. Get a life. Do something else with your time. Go see movies. Spend time with friends. Just sit outside in the sunshine and breathe the air. Do exactly nothing for a while. What are you trying to prove, and who are you trying to prove it to? In all likelihood you are not going to change the world one little bit. Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.

dollar··on Greg Knauss's 10-year-old son's $23,800 bug bite
The question no one ever asks is "why is the bill $23,000?". The only question that ever gets asked is "who should pay this $23,000 bill?". I charge $200/hr for my time at a minimum. Did this child really receive an equivalent of 2.8 weeks of my time in services? Or did an unecessary middle man negotiate ridiculous prices with the provider, leaving the consumer out of the equation but responsible for the bill? And yet people seem to think that more unnecessary middlemen will make the situation better.

What is the target application and who is the target customer or this service? It seems like a solution looking for a problem. How often does an application need to burst, but only within the resoure limits of a single VM? The problem of burst capacity seems solved already by simply scaling the number of instances in a well designed architecture.
dollar··on A VC-funded startup called WhosHere is trying to steal my social network
Perhaps you should read my advice to the OP a second time, which clearly says "My advice is hire counsel to advise you, educate yourself...". In what bizarre lawyer-universe is telling someone to hire counsel and educate themselves on the Internet practicing law? You must be smoking crack, my friend, and a lot of it.
dollar··on A VC-funded startup called WhosHere is trying to steal my social network
The adage "An attorney who represents himself has a fool for a client" has some relevance, but in the information society self represeration can have major advantages. The best way to be a Pro Se is to hire outside counsel to advise you, but to do all the dirty litigation work yourself. If this company has hired an outside attorney to litigate, this person could make that a very, very expensive proposition for them. I think this company's board would grow very concerned at legal expenses exceeding $100k with no hope of recovering from the defendant. My advise is hire counsel to advise you, educate yourself of self representation and court procedures, and rake these fuckers over the coals.

dollar··on Ask HN: Meeting with VCs tomorrow, what tips should I know?
I will tell you like it really is.

1. Say what your product does and why its going to be major in a single sentence within the first 10 seconds of your presentation. With VCs you need to pitch the problem or the opportunity, they do not give a crap about your secret sauce until they understand they are dealing with a big opportunity. Secret sauce is a second order problem. You have exactly 20 seconds to get their attention before you meet he most arrogant, inattentive, distracted person you have ever encountered.

2. If 20 seconds have elapsed, take a look at your VC. If they are sitting up straight, or leaning on the table attentive, you have them - now GO. Your presentation should be no more than 10 slides, but preferably less than that. Your slides should be pictorial with as few words as possible. Words are your worst enemy, they remind the VC of competitors, portfolio companies, analyst reports, VC gossip, and other factors. Words turn into questions that interrupt the flow of your pitch. If your VC is distracted, looking at their phone, typing away on their iPad, move along quickly because this probably is not going to pan out. If someone in the room is still not paying attention, walk over and stand behind them while you continue to talk. That one works every time.

3. Never, ever, yield control of the pitch, you must maintain the flow of the conversation at all times. YOU are giving the presentation and THEY are your audience. Let a VC start talking and they will never fucking stop, and 20 minutes later you will be out of time and they will forget who you were and what you were talking about. Do not let your VC start telling you how it is, YOU tell THEM how it fucking is, get them to shut their mouth for 2 fucking seconds. This does not mean be rude, this means come fully prepared to ambush your VC when they mean to abush you. Know your competitors, know their products, know their customers, know their strengths, know their weaknesses. Be able to explain quickly and succinctly why your product or solution is going to own a particular market segment. Know your segment, love your segment, explain your segment at length.

4. Never, ever follow up. Its a complete waste of your time, and it makes you seem like you really need them. If a VC is interested you will know when they call you with next steps. Do not send them an email, do not call them, do not singing telegram them. Nothing. Go completely link dead. If your VC wants your slides, its up to you, but you don't have to give them anything. Speaking from experience, VCs share these slides with their portfolio companies in addition to their partners, and if its helping their portfolio its probably hurting you. Either way you are giving away your property for free, so I suggest you do not do that. If they want your property, they can cut you a term sheet and the check to go with it.

5. Meet with exactly 3 VCs a week. If you have not heard from a VC in 2 days, drop them and add a fresh VC. Never tell a VC the name of another VC you have met with, its none of their business, and its a HUGE disadvantage for you. VCs all know each other, and if they think someone smarter than them passed on your deal, they are going to pass too. Similarly, if they think someone smarter than them is interested, they are going to call that someone and try to do talk their way into the deal. If and when your VC hands you a term sheet, THEN you can disclose who else you are willing to bring to the table. Use your judgement to gauge VC seriousness.

And that is the way it really is. My advice to you is this: If there is a way, any remote way, that you can build and launch your product or service without raising venture capital, do it. Work a job if you have to, work two jobs if you have to. The VC equation is highly skewed to favor the investor, but you are the person that has to do all of the work, you are the person that is really invested in the business. To make matters worse, once you accept that term sheet, your investment in your own business becomes subject to the whim of your investors. You may not understand this now, but you will understand it when you go to raise Series B, Series C, Series D, and find yourself with just 3% of your own company because it took more money than you ever dreamed. VCs want, no, demand, that you spend their money. Try telling a VC that you are going to take $3.5M in Series A and stretch it over 3 years as you iterate. Hell, try telling a VC these days that you want just $3.5M instead of $10M.

Good luck.

dollar··on Why $250k does not equate to rich [2010]
98% of everyone else where exactly? In Manhattan, NY the average household income is $121,000, while in Cullman, AL it is $41,000. Sorry, $250k in a major US city is "just making it" for the average family.

Meanwhile:

47% of Federal tax filers pay none, ZERO, taxes. In 1988 the burden shared by the bottom quantile that actually paid taxes was 8.7%, while it was 4.3% by 2006. The two quantiles, one that pays no taxes, and one that pays minimal taxes, consume >95% of Federal entitlement programs.

(Sources Non-Partisan Tax Policy Center http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/)

dollar··on Why $250k does not equate to rich [2010]
The mystical $250k first became "rich" back in 1993, when it became the top Federal income tax bracket, while $200k became "rich" way back in 1943 for the same reason.

$250k 1993 dollars in 2011 $370,000 $200k 1943 dollars in 2011 $2,500,000

dollar··on U.S. Income Inequality: It's Not So Bad
There has been a lot of lip service paid lately to income inequality in the United States, especially with respect to the earnings increase of the top 1% of wage earners over the last 10-20 years. Looking at the time series of wage brackets does not tell the complete story, but it makes a great headline for people eager to promote wealth redistribution. In fact most wage earners have exceptionally high mobility in the United States, supporting evidence in this publication from the Evil Capitalist Fed.
