Ever look at Mongolian cuisine? That's the bulk of what they eat. Most of those guys seem pretty healthy to me.
But does anyone do it? It doesn't really matter if it's /theoretically possible/ if no one actually does it.
Running an ActivityPub server is piss easy, anyone can do it on a $5 VPS or in their basement, and that's one of its big strengths.
So what? They make something better, so I take what they did and improve my product.
It's not my problem if someone from the Big Red East does something with my work as long as they share it too.
Yeah, no shit? We're not ants in a colony. I think you're pretty stupid if you're alright with harming yourself while achieving nothing. If you wanna risk your life for a cause then take direct action, eating processed slop and pretending to feel good about it is only gonna make both your world and mine shittier.
> Open source purism - especially for non-viral MIT and BSD licenses - is how Google and Microsoft and Amazon stole from the commons and turned it against us.
So why don't you advocate for Free Software which has always worked in the interest of the commons and provided the GPL as a way to combat this, instead of something else that isn't free and restricts the freedom of users more than a weak license?
Got what they asked for.
Political extremists advocate for free speech in order to further their agenda, but when given power happily turn back it against their enemies. Corporations advocate for "open source" and once they have enough free labor and market capture will lock it up to gain control. Publishing companies ransom publicly funded universities for access to their own research. The pharmaceutical industry might as well be the most evil and corrupt in the world, and by god you, nor anyone else is ever going to benefit from any medical innovation, nevertheless get microplastics out of your body until it can get sold back to you, assuming you can even afford it.
If you only care about supporting things as means to your own ends, then that's your deal, but don't act like you're operating on some moral high ground. To me you're just another tool.
No, it's cause fitting a Scheme runtime around Emacs Lisp proved more technically difficult than they imagined, and the performance benefits of the Guile runtime were shadowed by the actually successful effort of integrating a native compiler for Elisp.
> I want lab-grown meat, Year of the Linux Desktop, and synthetic biochemistry to get the microplastics out of my body. The FSF doesn't care. They don't care.
Why would they? What does lab-grown meat have to do with software?
> They want to force everyone to be backwards compatible with decisions they made thirty years ago as if it has any hope of revitalizing an ecosystem that they deny even exists.
Personally I like having my programs work instead of playing a goose chase with a moving target. Common Lisp is also a thirty year old stable language, but I don't see you complaining.
> I feel utterly and completely betrayed by the FSF and want as far away from them as possible.
Good to know where the tokens fall. I sure as hell won't be giving you any of my money (not like I was going to before).
You're nuts.
looks like a scam. why don't you describe your 'vision' in a way normal people can read instead of with pages of machine-generated corpo-schlock
the more i look at your site the more insane it gets. reminds me of that leaked pepsi logo powerpoint
One for UNIX is MaCoPiX:

It still works, I used it a few years ago.
> And on a serious note, while I kind of get why these sorts of things fell out of favor, it did add some whimsy and variety to the experience of using a computer. It would be kind of neat to see a resurgence of that sort of thing. Doesn't have to specifically be desktop mascots or pets, either; there was a gold mine of gimmicky software in the 90s and 2000s.
> Likewise, the gradual decline of the screensaver has been somewhat of a bummer. On one hand, yeah, the relevance of screensavers has fallen off so much that I hardly noticed when they were gone... but again, it added some fun to computing. Hard not to miss it a little.
The more and more prepackaged and restrictive computing becomes the more it's seen in the realm of "serious business" and consumed blandly and soullessly than something that's inherently fun and worth playing with.
On a normal text-based chat like IRC or XMPP, you chat with people, maybe share files and that's about it, the way it should be.
On Discord, everything is grabbing your attention in this pavlovian game where the actual substance of what you're talking about is secondary, on the other hand it's more about cultivating attention towards yourself with reactions and memes. It also promotes segregating everyone into a caste system with "roles" and whatnot. If you've ever been around you'll notice how quickly people sardonically accept Discord as being the name-brand platform for predators and sex perverts.
I think a lot of the problem with kids on the net these days has to do with the way they chat with people like this. When you're on IRC you've got a place to "post into the void", where what you say is ultimately ethereal and even if two people are flaming one day they can go back to being buddies the next day cause it doesn't really matter. When you're on Discord everything you say is logged, and the air hangs thick around you cause what you're supposed to say is meant to matter to someone, even though most people are just cultivating this emotional persona detached from their real selves. So you get this really toxic cesspool as a cultural penchant built-in.
I've never really connected with that many people I've met through Discord the on the same level as IRC-adjacent people, FWIW.
