doikor··on How Riot Games is fighting the war against video game hackers
Realistically what is the alternative? That is pretty much the only way to ensure the cheats don't run at kernel level. If the cheat runs at kernel level it is very hard (or impossible) to detect it from user land outside of behavior (which mostly happens on the server side).

Only thing I can think of is Microsoft locking down Windows so hard that nothing outside of code written (well signed) by Microsoft can run with kernel level privileges but I think that is an even worse option.

If you don't like it you can always just go and play any of the titles without kernel level anti-cheat and get a cheater in ~1/5th of your games (my experience in counter strike).

doikor··on Where does air pollution come from?
> There was a bit of an uproar a few years back about how many premiership football players were using asthma medication, a higher rate than the general population. The implication being that they were using them as performance enhacning drugs. But if you take into account that they disproportionately come from poor inner-city areas (not all, but many more), the proportion with asthma looks much more in line with the background rate.

You can get asthma just from breathing really hard too much. Especially in cold climate. Due to this it is really common with endurance athletes.

The 0 to 3 year counter also resets when you get promoted (you are "probationary" for the new role)
doikor··on Compiling Java into native binaries with Graal and Mill
It is just a normal java agent and works with any jvm app. As in "java -agentlib:... -jar app.jar"

But you do need to start/run your app once to get the agent to do its stuff.

https://www.graalvm.org/latest/reference-manual/native-image...

(it is part of the graalvm so use that as your jvm to do this)

doikor··on Nokia Design Archive
These are not pulled from some random website. These are actual internal archives donated from Nokia (well Microsoft Mobile Oy these days)

https://nokiadesignarchive.aalto.fi/about.html

> The Nokia Design Archive is a graphic and interactive portal designed by researchers from Aalto University in Finland. It currently hosts over 700 entries, curated from thousands of items donated by Microsoft Mobile Oy and representing over 20 years of Nokia’s design history — both seen and unseen. You can freely explore the archive, learn about designers’ experiences working in Nokia and discover interesting topics surrounding design and mobile technologies.

You can look at the uncurated collection at aalto university repo https://repo.aalto.fi/index.php?name=SO_b66a9391-dcf8-4399-8... (not sure if all of the materials digitized/online though)

doikor··on Nokia Design Archive
They were being thrown away/deleted so some researches from the university decided to save them. I much prefer this to losing this information/history fully.
doikor··on How did they make cars fall apart in old movies (2017)
For Defender there is Ineos Grenadier https://ineosgrenadier.com/
doikor··on Is Iceland getting ready to join the EU?
For heavy industry they are buying from themselves when the electricity prices spike (Pohjolan Voima). Basically they always get it at cost of production (mankala periaate).

This is why you don’t see upm kymmene, stora enso, kemira, etc profits go down when electricity prices are high (they go up as they can sell what they don’t need for massive profits). This mainly applies during "normal" times (when olkiluoto nuclear plants go down which they own a big chunk of or something like that the situation might change)

doikor··on Is Iceland getting ready to join the EU?
This is mostly the same here in Finland (one of the cheapest non household electricity prices in Europe.)

Though I don’t see much of an issue as that is just a contract between two private parties. What is the ownership structure like in Iceland?

Also in the case of some of the most electricity consuming industries they are mostly buying from themselves (Pohjolan Voima which is a owned by a group of heavy industry companies)

doikor··on A Minecraft server written in COBOL
You have to play the Java version on pc to connect to your own server software.
doikor··on How we made our AI code review bot stop leaving nitpicky comments
Code style is something that should be enforceable with linters and formatters for the most part without any need for an AI.
doikor··on Goodbye from a Linux Community Volunteer
No but Linus lives in US and is a US citizen.
doikor··on Goodbye from a Linux Community Volunteer
US or EU are not sanctioning Amazon, US Department of Defense or US.
doikor··on Goodbye from a Linux Community Volunteer
AFAIK the US Huawei sanctions are not a blanket "have nothing to do with them at all" but instead apply to telecoms equipment and phones and their components. Don't think software is a component.

There was some talk about banning Huawei access to AOSP but I don't think that ever went through.

And yes sanctions are weird. Finland is sanctioning a lot of Russian business including travel over the border for most part but still there is a train load of copper and nickel ore coming over every day or two.

doikor··on Goodbye from a Linux Community Volunteer
And the sentence before that said

> If you haven't heard of Russian sanctions yet, you should try to read the news some day. And by "news", I don't mean Russian state-sponsored spam.

And the sentence right before that

> And FYI for the actual innocent bystanders who aren't troll farm accounts - the "various compliance requirements" are not just a US thing.

Meaning there is also valid legal reasons to do this with both the country he is living in (US) and the country he is from (Finland) having sanctions on the companies whose employees are being excluded. I think the is also a US citizen.

tl;dr; read the whole post instead of taking a single quote out of context.

doikor··on Anarchy in Sudan has spawned the world’s worst famine in 40 years
The current chaos is a result of UAE and Saudi having a proxy war there. Basically the developed world stepping out to let these countries figure shit out for themselves just led to another group of countries stepping in.
doikor··on Judges rule Big Tech's free ride on Section 230 is over
4chan is moderated and the moderation is different on each board with the only real global moderation rule being "no illegal stuff". In addition to that the site does curate the content it shows you using an algorithm even though it is a very basic one (the thread with last reply goes to the top of the page and threads older then X are removed automatically.)

For example the qanon conspiracy nuts got moderated out of /pol/ for arguing in bad faith/just being too crazy to actually have any kind of conversation with and they fled to another board (8chan and later 8kun) that has even less moderation.

doikor··on Dutch DPA fines Uber €290M because of transfers of drivers’ data to the US
What is the actual innovation of Uber outside of trying to push the competitors out of the market with investor money? (this isn't anything new/innovative either)

We had app based ride hailing services before Uber and still have them so it can't be that. Surge pricing also has existed before them.

doikor··on Epic Games Store and Fortnite Arrive on EU iPhones
Yeah the fact that you have to compile a separate binary is already too much work for most developers. Just not worth the effort for less then 2% market share.
doikor··on Epic Games Store and Fortnite Arrive on EU iPhones
A good start would be to support some existing API (Vulcan and OpenGL) instead of making their own (Metal).

Or throw in the towel and do what Linux gaming did and just make a compatibility layer for Windows APIs and DirectX (wine/proton). Though this compatibility layer stuff has big issues with anti cheat software making it not really suitable for many online games.

doikor··on A Texas "moth man" photographed 550 species in his own yard
The number plate is still attached to the car and thus the shape of the rest of the car affects how air moves over it.

How much is hard to say. Aerodynamics is just hard but basically as the car moves through air it pushes air out of the way and this air also pushes other air out of the way and thus elements next to each other will effect each other.

doikor··on How Olympics officials try to catch “motor doping”
They check all the riders bikes.

The only time someone has been caught for motor doping was for a spare bike that they never used in that race.

doikor··on CrowdStrike's Falcon Sensor also linked to Linux kernel panics and crashes
Problem with that is the tool can’t protect the system from any bad actor who gets ring 0 access.

And even if it has ring 0 access it can’t really verify anything without secureboot or something like it verifying that nothing else started before it. This is also why Riots anti cheat runs as ring 0 as it has to protect the game against the owner/admin of the machine.

(And after that there is still bios or firmware level exploits)

doikor··on AMD to buy Silo AI for $665M
They have been using/building stuff for the LUMI supercomputer which has a bit over 12000 MI250X

doikor··on Distrust in Big Tech Fuels Adblocker Usage Among 52% of Americans
More like the internet is unusable without one. Not being as easily tracked by some mega corp is just a nice bonus.
doikor··on Pharma firms stash profits in Europe's tax havens
There is some interest in trying to fix this. Mainly with a global minimum corporate tax rate in the OECD as this can’t really be fixed by individual countries.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_minimum_corporate_tax_r...

Though remains to be seen when it will actually go fully into effect and when/if all the various loop holes will be closed.

doikor··on Frame.work laptop now available in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden
The bigger thing is having Nordic keyboard layout available. Also we use ISO layout with more keys and shapes/sizes.

> With this launch, we’re adding Danish and Swedish/Finnish keyboards that you can order now with a Framework Laptop 13 or as a standalone Keyboard or Input Cover Kit.

For me the biggest issue is the different shape enter key causing me to miss click it all the time when using standard (ANSI?) qwerty keyboard.

doikor··on Visa, Mastercard $30B swipe fee settlement rejected by US judge
> is there some sort of contract that stops vendors from adding a "credit card processing fee"?

In EU it is not allowed to charge the customer any kind of extra fee for using a card. Though obviously it only works well together with the 0.3% cap on the actual fees the vendor pays.

https://europa.eu/youreurope/business/finance-funding/making...

> You're not allowed to charge your customers extra for using a credit or debit card. This applies to all card purchases (in shops and online) made throughout the EU.

doikor··on iDOS 3 Rejected by Apple
DMA doesn't block Apple from making any of those features. It just makes it illegal for Apple to block others from implementing the same/similar features.
doikor··on EU Council has withdrawn the vote on Chat Control
One thing to remember is that the members of the commission are supposed to represent the interests of EU not the member state they are from.

Member countries are represented in the council by representative of their government and EU citizens in the parliament by MEPs they voted for.
