The big difference is philosophical. I don't mind having a tool to manage my todos, whereas todo.txt is centered around your Todo.txt file.

I've been considering building an integration to Todo.txt as I don't think our projects are mutually exclusive.

I'm also building out a reusable web component and I plan on making an IOS + Android app as well.

I just released version 0.2 of todolist [1] which looks and feels very similar to theca in a lot of ways. The main difference is that todolist is focused around GTD and productivity, and is akin to Todoist or Wunderlist, but for the command line.

dogas··on My Experience using a Bitcoin ATM
Author here. I see what you did there but I disagree. The whole point of bitcoin is anonymity and convenience of transacting. What I did was essentially "buy" US dollars using my bitcoin, through this device.

The fact that this device wanted to establish and verify my identity seemed unnecessary to me and counter to what I think are bitcoin's strongest qualities.

dogas··on Fucking Shell Scripts
The name came about when we were writing the majority of our ansible code. We mentioned to each other in frustration multiple times, "Man, this would be so much easier if I could just use fucking shell scripts."
dogas··on Fucking Shell Scripts
works for me! http://rubygems.org/gems/fucking_shell_scripts
dogas··on Fucking Shell Scripts
Coauthor here. Well, this is a surprise! This project was mainly borne out of our frustrations with Chef and then Ansible for configuring our servers.

A few thoughts: 1) This project is incomplete and is more of a concept than anything. We wrote it literally in an afternoon, and were giggling like schoolgirls the whole time.

2) There is value in what Ansible provides. It does a lot of things for you. FSS did not replace ansible where we work.

All that being said however, I feel like this (or a project like this) does have merit, if executed properly. I feel that once you get used to how FSS works, it might be a good solution for you. We intentionally tried to keep it as simple as possible.

dogas··on Using Amazon EC2 to mine Dogecoin
Author here. Yes, at the time of writing the blog post, I really did not know much about mining difficulty, or how dogecoin's difficulty matched with other scrypt-based currencies.

I should probably update the post a bit!

dogas··on Shell Scripts vs. Ansible
A coworker and I needed to get an ElasticSearch server up using chef, and the whole time we were complaining that we wished we could just use shell scripts.

So, we spent a friday and came up with http://fuckingshellscripts.org. At first it was just a parody, but then it started to get real after we found a lot of value in just using shell scripts for simple servers.

Granted, we now use ansible and it has been far easier to implement than chef!

dogas··on Making some Discourse code a little better
My intent was to make the show method read almost like pseudocode when I was done with it, so the reader could easily see, at a glance, a high-level overview of what was happening with that method.

I tried to make the experience of seeing that code sort of like reading the front page of a newspaper. You see the headlines, but if you want to drill down, you gotta go more in depth. It also allowed me to keep the size of the methods down.

This entire refactor was meant to make the code more readable, which is why I made some of the decisions I made.

dogas··on "DCI" in Ruby is completely broken
DCI is a paradigm related to design and architecture. Computers are so fast today that does this benchmarking business really matter?

If DCI helps to keep your code maintainable, readable, and less buggy, is that a better tradeoff? I would think that 95-99% of the time, the answer is yes.

On a side note, if speed is mission critical, then would ruby really be the language of choice to use?

dogas··on Where the logic hides in rails apps
I just tore through that book just a few days ago! Definitely a lot of eye-opening things happening in relation to rails and architecture.

I think a lot of people/projects/companies have been burned attempting to upgrade rails, or have a slow test suite, or having a terrible time trying to figure out where to fit core application logic into the rails stack.

And then you have an epiphany and say, wait, rails should not define my app. You say, I should be able to upgrade to rails 4 on day 1. Rails does not define my application, my application defines my application! So if you do just a wee bit of partitioning, it goes a very long way. (much to the chagrin of DHH, who for some reason evangelizes having your core logic in ActiveRecord models, to a fault)

dogas··on Where the logic hides in rails apps
I tried to pick a very contrived example. The architecture rails forces you to have is great if all of your business logic is simply CRUD. Once your app starts doing other things though, that's where careful consideration is needed as to where that logic should live.

You could imagine callbacks or observers that do all sorts of things:

  ping an external service
  touch another model or models
  send an internal email
or does a combination of a bunch of stuff.
Things get even tougher when you start having flags that turn logic on or off. It has the potential to really become a mess, very fast.
dogas··on AWS: the good, the bad and the ugly
We still use EBS for database backups via ec2-consistent-snapshot. The slave DB that performs this is not production-facing.

We have 2 separate chef recipes for our DBs:

One is for a full-time slave. This recipe will set up the db to use the EBS volume.

The other is for a slave that will be promoted to a master. In this case, we do a little extra legwork to do a bit-by-bit copy of a recent EBS snapshot, onto the ephemeral disk.

Sounds like I have more blog posts to write!

dogas··on AWS: the good, the bad and the ugly
We here at PipelineDeals also abandoned EBS-backed instances after their 2nd outage.

Instead we rely on instances that use an instance-store root device. During the EBS outage, our instance store servers did not have any issues, while our EBS-backed servers really struggled throughout the day, with crazy high loads.

dogas··on Eight years today
I lost my mom to glioblastoma. I remember times, near the end, when my mom was so sick that I almost wished she would die sooner, so I could remember her as she used to be, and not frail, sick, unable to form sentences, or remember who I was.

Indeed there is absolutely a divide between those who have lost a close loved one and those who have (yet) not.

It's been about 5 years since it has happened, and it's affected me in a profound manner. Although I'm only 32, I see how temporary everything is. Perhaps it's a morbid viewpoint but I'm not sad or depressed. It's just an interesting philosophy I have naturally gained from going through something so terrible. It's sort of an "it is what it is" type of mentality, and it's almost like I feel that my real age is like 65.

Ever since then, I "take stock" very frequently to ensure that I am living the life I want to live, and I am happy. If I am not, I make changes. Because I know things can sour very quickly. I understand fully now when older people say things that generally equate to "value being healthy", or "health is wealth". I try to value that philosophy every day, and ensure I find happiness in my job, my friends, and family. Indeed, that is my highest priority.
