doctorpangloss··on REA Reverse – Engineer Anything
One thing's for sure, the people paying $220/mo subs are showing awesome demos. The people who are not paying $220/mo, they're producing: a lot of drama.
doctorpangloss··on FDA may allow some toxic chemicals to be added to food without safety review
It's complicated in that the fed gov agencies are so big and the top down bossing-around they are trying to do isn't very effective.

It's better to focus on the simple facts about RFKJR, he cares about celebs and cocktail parties, he doesn't really care about leadership or running a health agency.

Not dead, but they are ridiculously buggy. Much like WSL.
doctorpangloss··on Scam American companies are using to manipulate ingredient lists
I want to buy the thing that was the most expensive and exuberant to manufacture for the lowest price. So yeah, when I want jam, I want jam that is the most strawberries. This isn't complicated.

doctorpangloss··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
so what you're saying is though, if they could afford it they would just use claude or codex?
doctorpangloss··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
okay, but are you US based? and can you specifically describe one of the pieces of software you are developing? it's okay if not. i am just wondering. i certainly believe that crappier stuff is cheaper!
doctorpangloss··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
"Hey Mr. Fortune 500 Client, would you prefer us to use something called DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, made by the Chinese, sending your Fortune 500 code to some random service provider on something called OpenRouter, where they promise according to something called Zero Data Retention that--"

Mr. Client: "I'm going to stop you right there. Why aren't you using Claude, or Codex, or Claude on Bedrock? Don't we deserve the best?"

You: ...

Look I don't know. I can tell from the hyperbole of your language, talking out of asses and such, that there is more to the story than you are letting on. Like Chinese users are banned from officially using Claude and Codex, for example. So many reasons that you cannot use Claude, not so much reasons to not choose to use Claude. All I am really saying is, I know DSV4 is kind of bad, that there is a lot of inauthentic activity, and that Claude and Codex refuse to do many kinds of inauthentic activity, and that a lot of coding done by outsourced shops has always been of questionable quality and purpose. I mean in my personal life, I know more people who have been scammed by Bulgarian code body shops than I know people who have used DSV4.1.

doctorpangloss··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
do YOU know anyone gainfully employed in programming who is using dsv4.1 to do work? what kind of work is it? why don't you ask them if it is good?

in the market, where you cannot fake or hide stuff very easily: the outsource customer services and cheating sectors have been the most disrupted. Cheating company Chegg lost 99% of its market value. CS it remains to be seen - https://www.reuters.com/technology/teleperformance-shares-pl... - certainly perceived to be disrupted, but they are not dead yet.

in my personal usage: dsv4 is generally pretty buggy. for example, if you give it a needle-in-the-haystack simple copying problem, it catastrophically fails to find needles if they happen to be positioned at index 250k tokens out of 1m. it can also be triggered to spew all sorts of garbage when DSpark is enabled during ordinary long-context coding, such as spewing weird DSML tool call errors after a normally parsed tool call error.

i don't know why you have to attack me personally, i think you're a bright and otherwise nice person and you understand the thrust of my POV.

doctorpangloss··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
my own usage of deekseep v4.1 flash, and that among the dozens of great programmers i know, not a single person is using it

BUT. they are employed to do / deciding-to-do authentic (if often meaningless) stuff.

here's a short list of inauthentic activity that claude and openai refuse to do:

- chat services that, when you ask them, say they are not chatbots when they are

- code to work around software licenses or DRM

- code to scrape or download copyrighted material

- directly cheating on homework

- adopting a persona in social media that spreads misinformation or propaganda

this is but a short list. but ask me, "are there enough inauthentic activity demands such that someone who CANNOT USE claude or gpt as the LLM would use dsv4.1 on openrouter instead?" yes. i mean there are whole countries right now where the culture can be summarized as, "bottom to top, inauthentic activity." i am surprised it is not more usage!

doctorpangloss··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
because it doesn't work very well?

if you have a legitimate coding application, it isn't very good. if you have some kind of inauthentic activity, which could be what it is trained for for all sorts of reasons...

doctorpangloss··on “Math 2.0” will need to value mathematical progress more holistically
Kids on HN have built their whole personalities around math, and now, they are discovering that "problem solving ability" has nothing to do with solving problems.
doctorpangloss··on Paramount Skydance has completed its $111B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery
That's not true. That's the point. It is the same thing as what Reed Hastings is saying. He thinks he is saying some deep insightful thing, and it's ridiculous. It's 200% wrong.
doctorpangloss··on Paramount Skydance has completed its $111B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery
Reed Hastings may be rich, but he is a fucking moron. By his logic the greatest threat to entertainment is people who parent without screens.
doctorpangloss··on Mistral Large 4
there is truth to the scarcity of EUV solutions, although I am more radical, I don't think there's really scarcity of ANYTHING except real estate, physical or metaphorical. that said this little rinky dink patent... Mistral is not ASML. Never was, never will be. you are welcome to read into the dynamics of EU capital markets.

honestly the craziest thing to me is that VC people in the EU, they say, let's grow the pie, and when you look at their little decks with their little flags next to the portraits, it's french, german, italian, spanish, all piling into the same 40 or so companies, which will 110% list in the US in order to exit. Meanwhile, EU member Poland produces tons of entrepreneurs, despite no Polish flags in those growth fund decks, and its best people just leave to the US and raise money there and make fabulously successful stuff.

so yeah, "grow the pie" except for Poland. EU relitigating the same feuds it has been for centuries.

doctorpangloss··on Mistral Large 4
the greatest threat to Mistral is that there isn't a deep and large enough capital market in the EU to absorb the valuation step ups needed by the handful of EU sovereign growth investors to justify their existence.

you could say, that's perpetually a tomorrow problem, so long as they never go public, but that should illuminate for you: if everyone "knows this," it's inevitable that this so-called EU company, that didn't invent any of the AI, the hardware nor the training data, where their product is essentially more like a VPN provider than a frontier technology company, just lists and capitalizes in the US anyway.

doctorpangloss··on Mistral Large 4
they just use claude on bedrock.
doctorpangloss··on Mistral Large 4
How do you figure? I haven't met a single person who doesn't use Claude or Codex for programming in any serious way.
doctorpangloss··on OpenAI "rogue" agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
uh, my dude, millions of people break moving vehicle codes across the country every day with no consequence. in San Francisco some lady killed a family of 4 with, essentially, no consequences, she got away with straight up murder, she gets her license back. every community in california, you can more or less legally commit murder so long as you do it in a car and claim you were confused about the accelerator and the brake. so i think you're invoking one of the worst possibly comparisons you could.
doctorpangloss··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
Bribes.
doctorpangloss··on So you think you could be an electrician?
Better than the nincompoops my landlord sends out to "fix" stuff. Better than trying to get someone to fix anything at all in San Francisco.

The truth is I would rather choose from 100 varied vendors - if prefab were permitted in San Francisco, you would be able to buy it from anyone - than to be forced to endure the shitty alternative of simply unpermitted work, or the kind of work that my lunatic licensed electrician neighbor does, which has burned down just as many walls as in your total hypothetical that has never happened.

doctorpangloss··on So you think you could be an electrician?
Indeed, university educations go with you everywhere, they're one of the few stores of big wealth that cannot be seized at a border. Whereas, okay, the whole reason we are paying electricians so much is because unions in California and New York, where real estate is the largest and second largest economic sector, prevent you from doing almost exactly that: transferring a prefabricated piece of a building from China across a border with all the work built into it, same as everything else.

You can split hairs on my metaphor here but don't miss the point. There's no scarcity of labor to correctly install safe wires, whether it is in datacenters or homes or electronics, nor scarcity of innovations in logistics or whatever to transfer that labor from places where it is cheap to places that need to build. It's all guild feuds.

doctorpangloss··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
The moral of the story is, if you want to make a mass surveillance tool that tracks your every movement and collects all of your most sensitive communications, make sure it has a great camera, a bright large screen and day long battery life.
