> Another part of the discount is that Claude Max 20x is $200 but gives usage equivalent to thousands of dollars worth of API-based token spend.

this is all it is. it's not complicated.

doctorpangloss··on Stripe will reportedly acquire OpenRouter for $7B+
depends what the tulips are. tokens? private growth stage shares?

openrouter is involved with a lot of scammy crypto personalities. maybe they are the tulips people have been manic about for too long. maybe the collisons are the tulips.

doctorpangloss··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing

doctorpangloss··on Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock Origin
Nothing stops people from using a fork with manifest v2 support restored. In fact "VibeChrome" would probably be a successful product.
doctorpangloss··on Nine PBS sues Iron Mountain over blocked access to archival data
You are overthinking this. In your scenario, you will offer to pay a lawyer to write your reply who who will say, "no just comply with the order who cares." You cannot make analogies. People just hold these frou frou promises from Iron Mountain in some higher regard than other meaningless marketing, so they mook for it - a company nobody cares about - on Hacker News.
doctorpangloss··on Nine PBS sues Iron Mountain over blocked access to archival data
Maybe it isn't the same thing in the Iron Mountain Cinematic Universe.

Consider this: the utility that provides the electricity and the ISP providing internet also do not have a direct relationship with Nine PBS, but will be essential in carrying out the court order. Does the judge have to expressly name every transitive party responsible for carrying out the order? Time will tell, but to me the answer seems "no."

doctorpangloss··on 70% of AI revenue comes from OpenAI and Anthropic [video]
Why do people continue to use them despite the existence of so many open weights models? This is "priced in." Short of stealing the checkpoints straight from the servers, it's unlikely to change.
doctorpangloss··on 70% of AI revenue comes from OpenAI and Anthropic [video]
One interpretation is that so called profitability is one 15 minute phone call between OpenAI and Anthropic to increase prices. If you think that antitrust is the reason that this won't happen, you've stated a speculation. Not a certainty.

No, it has some of the nasty trappings of a religion, like keeping women separate until you need to exploit them, but none of the good moral or creative literary parts of religions.

left hand: governance gaps, privacy, owning instead of renting

right hand: nearly every employee of every org buying these things is sending almost everything to LLMs - or using software ULTIMATELY written by, tested by or whatevered by, these LLMs. LLMs that were created by or distilled from anthropic, openai, or google, who see everything SALIENT about what you do, or what ALL of your customers do, even if they are careful about not looking at the specifics of what you do

Time will tell.
doctorpangloss··on All of Winona Police Department's Flock cameras cut down and stolen
they invest in defense stuff now, that's new!

but. paul graham doesn't like defense stuff. there were plenty of great defense seed investments (palantir), and he runs the best seed venture firm in the world, always has, so his opinion matters. but it was out of a righteous place, it wasn't because he thought it couldn't make money.

y combinator is a much bigger fund now with lots of people in charge. the "2000-2015" era you are talking about: valuations of everything were 1/10th of what they are now. it's hard to make any definitive comparisons about venture trends.

doctorpangloss··on All of Winona Police Department's Flock cameras cut down and stolen
if you want to tackle the POV of the true believers at Y Combinator*: look, flock can't be that effective if all it takes is a guy with a ladder to defeat it, right? same thing with pervasive facial detection, you can wear a mask. you don't have to go into all this philosophical stuff to see how the promises will not be fulfilled.

*Garry Tan has been characterized as a True Believer, in that he sincerely believes Flock's vision will reduce crime and not be misused. on the flip side they don't invest in Palantir, Anduril, Applied Intuition, etc. or other defense stuff. so it's very exceptional for them.

It may or may not be true. The people who made this modification and the other commenters didn't do anything rigorous to verify what they did. They just eyeball it. They could very well make some other error - this has happened frequently - that developing on prod, not knowing what they are doing, has and hopefully will again solve.

It's a big world. There are a lot of places to buy oil from. And the balance of payments is not that complicated with energy - like where do Middle East OPEC members reinvest their dollars? In world assets. Like Japanese companies.

IMO, the far more impactful geopolitical conflict is still the war in Ukraine, between two countries with allies that actually have deep ties to the rest of the world, with casualty counts exceeding a million people.

But nonetheless the problems there, in Japan, are the same that generations of Japanese have already identified as a big problem, predating the fall of Bretton Woods or whatever modern top down policies: the patriarchy, nepotism and xenophobia... Many similar problems to the West. You cannot bank or math your way out of a suffocating patriarchy, which is to say, the humanities people have always had a bigger impact on our day to day lives than the people crunching for Jane Street interviews.

metareview CRD420251034611 "non-significant reduction in sleep onset latency" means blue light has been conclusively observed to not delay sleep - it doesn't mean that blue light has not yet been observed to delay sleep, we instead know conclusively that it does not.

registered trial: https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT01855126 - RCT where shining a bunch of blue light on old people's eyeballs didn't help them stay awake longer.

something i learned from this journey is, going to bed too early is actually a more common clinical issue than staying up too late. like old people go to the doctor, and that's the issue that they have, they feel like they sleep way too much.

doctorpangloss··on I built a f.lux alternative because the M5 Max firmware broke existing solutions
what if i told you that there are randomized control trials that conclusively show that the color tint of your screen, blue or otherwise, does not affect sleep?
doctorpangloss··on Stacked PRs are now live on GitHub
haha, what if you add a filter that hides merge commits?

i appreciate that you are trying to make it possible for people who vibe code solutions to problems to get code merged by people who have made GitHub their lifestyle. but surely you see how, in my framing there, the people who are worried about how their history "looks" are the problem

doctorpangloss··on Gemini Robotics 2 brings whole body intelligence to robots
> it honestly doesn't matter if it takes a robot longer than a human to clean your house

it depends. in order for my slow ass Roomba to clean my floors, I have to move a bunch of things out of the way and not use the room.

on the flip side, i think this "the robot cannot automate the whole task" thing is reductive too. suffice it to say, EVERYTHING matters, there honestly nothing that "honestly doesn't matter."

doctorpangloss··on So, you want to make a game engine (2023)
> perhaps i do need to be making an engine from scratch to keep myself interested

you're not the only one. jonathan blow has made tons of money selling games and also needs to write a whole programming language for 100h to keep him interested enough to yield 1h of content.

i can't really say much about the people who say don't program game engines (or whatever thing they don't like) in terms of opportunity costs (a generous name for this category of complaining), other than they would be bad at both making art and making money.

It's completely academic. At 5tok/s you can process 13 MTok per month at concurrency 1. I use 5 BILLION tokens per week when coding.
