doctaj··on The Fence About a Spending Decision? Try the 0.01% Rule

doctaj··on OpenAI's cash burn will be one of the big bubble questions of 2026
What Google AI products do people not want to use? Gemini is catching up to chatpt from a MAU perspective, ai overviews in search are super popular and staggeringly more used than any other ai-based product out there, a Google ai mode has decent usage, and Google Lens has surprisingly high usage. These products together dwarf everyone else out there by like 10x.
doctaj··on AWS CEO says replacing junior devs with AI is 'one of the dumbest ideas'
There’s also the benefit of being naive - like, juniors can be seriously audacious when they haven’t been burned a million times. I miss having excitement and optimism.

One weird thing never discussed with Flock is any hard evidence that Flock cameras actually contribute to solving crimes, and what kind of crimes they help with. You have to assume it is helping at least to some degree... since cops are generally in favor of them.

They've got to have the data... For the public to make an informed decision, the police should be able to say "hey, Flock contributed to solving 100 crimes last year, 99% of which were minor property crimes like theft or vandalism and 1% was violent crime. If you get rid of these, some of these crimes may not be solved as quickly or at all." And then if you get rid of the cameras, people don't have to worry about police abusing the system, the feds getting up in individuals lives, and anyone persecuting specific groups of people.

Their comms guy just basically says "not that many departments are actually cancelling", "i empathize", and "the customers had it set up incorrectly to let the feds in"... What?!

You’re still a consumer, though. A single locust doesn’t wipe out thousands of acres on its own — it’s the swarm of individuals all buying (eating) “only what they need”.
doctaj··on $1T in tech stocks sold off as market grows skeptical of AI
I found it weird they say that microsoft is in Silicon Valley.
doctaj··on iPad Pro with M5 chip
Same. Also have a super old iPad Pro, and it still works amazing. I always ponder upgrading, knowing that I’ve gotten so much use and enjoyment out of it, but then get wrapped around the axle about how the CPU is absurdly overpowered for what I do with it (YouTube, podcasts, music, drawing/note taking, reading). It’s my main device at home, too, so I never feel like I need to upgrade my phone - it’s definitely saved me money in that regard, too. :P
doctaj··on Python 3.14 is here. How fast is it?
I feel dumb - I thought it was a chili pepper, too.

From context, I doubt they are saying that Europe has zero innovation — they’re likely trying to complain about current rules and regulations stifling innovation and progress today. No one thinks Europe has done nothing worthwhile, ever…

Yes.
doctaj··on Anandtech.com now redirects to its forums
Wouldn’t Cloudflare’s free CDN handle that? That kind of traffic is dirt cheap.

doctaj··on Gmail/Google starts disabling features unless you agree to data processing
This doesn’t seem like withholding features because you don’t let them process your data, but that they CANT give you these features unless they have the data to do it — like, They obviously need to get your email data to give you flight info in calendar. Am I missing something…?
doctaj··on Techno-feudalism and the rise of AGI: A future without economic rights?
All corporate media have the same problems (ie: getting peoples' attention, money, advertising, etc. -- to stay alive). All corporate media have their own internal politics (like all businesses), a historical track record, a reputation, and individuals that have their own biases. However, not all corporate media blatantly lie to their users (that is... tell people incorrect information to get their point across). Fox News blatantly lies to their viewers -- that is, the intent is to give them false information. It IS different from the norm.
doctaj··on Why Pandas feels clunky when coming from R (2024)
Agreed! I started out doing data analysis in R… switched to Python because it was more multi-purpose at the time (ie: data engineering, analysis, and model deployment)… and I think about it and miss it so often.

No one is going to spend millions to billions of dollars on manufacturing facilities in the current political situation (read: unstable, risky, constantly changing).

doctaj··on How Agile Are You Really?
I love these kind of think pieces, and I agree with most of the points - it’d be nice to have engineers that are engaged and knowledgeable about their customers… but I’ve never seen this in practice, except for like… emergencies or super urgent things (and it’s always the best, haha). But I wonder about how to tee this up to management or examples of teams doing this in real life.
