dobladov··on Ask HN: How did you learn Regex?
Develop useful tools that need complex parsing, I gathered data from websites using regex to make automated tools, for example getting flat offers from my city and making a tool to notify me.

Simply try to parse some complex information like movie strings, as an exercise you can try to parse these movie names to produce a result like this.

``` { "name": "Dawn Of The Planet of The Apes", "year": "2014", "resolution": "1080p", "codec": "h264", "source": "web-dl", "audio": "AAC5.1", "group": "RARBG" } ```
dobladov··on Node.js adds experimental support for TypeScript
I use snippets to write those, yes it's more verbose there's not denying that.
For me the advantages of just having JS files and not worrying about more complex source-maps, build files, etc definitely makes it worth it.
dobladov··on Node.js adds experimental support for TypeScript
You should write complex types in interfaces files where they belong, and there's full typescript support.
I use this approach professionally in teams with many developers, and it works better for us than native TS. Honestly give it a try, I was skeptical at first.
dobladov··on Node.js adds experimental support for TypeScript
You can have this now adding types with JSDoc and validating them with typescript without compiling, you get faster builds and code that works everywhere without magic or need to strip anything else than comments.
The biggest pain point of using JSDoc at least for me was the import syntax, this has changed since Typescript 5.5, and it's now not an issue anymore.
dobladov··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
I asked for ways to install an APK in android outside Google Play Store, all the responses ended in security concerns about the origin of those APKs and how I should limit myself to official stores.
dobladov··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
As expected, I asked the same questions to perplexity.ai, and it gave a correct response, just with a minor disclaimer at the end explaining the risks.
dobladov··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
I would be willing to pay for an AI that it's not constantly worrying about my safety and ethics, it's very frustrating that even when I ask for tech related topics, Gemini it's holding information on the basis of actions that might cause harm to my devices.
dobladov··on Google's NotebookLM Could Be the Ultimate AI-Based Notes App If It Stops Lying
It seems to work great to ask questions about any books, for example I was unable to remember the name of a character and just uploading the PDF and asking gave me the correct answer as opposed to the hallucinated response of ChatGPT or Bard.
dobladov··on SR-71 pilot, photographer and storyteller Brian Shul dies at 75
Just a week ago, I finished reading "Skunk Works: A Personal Memoir of My Years at Lockheed", what an incredible book about the SR-71 and other edge cutting planes, not only from the engineering and pioneer perspective, it also shows the perspective of some of the pilots and how risky and difficult their missions were.
Completely worth the read.
dobladov··on TS to JSDoc Conversion
We do this at my current company for all projects, it does not mean you don't use typescript, you will still validate all your files with TS, but there's no build step, just a check.
Very rarely we find a case that we can't cover with JSDoc annotations, and most of the time it means the code could be refactored to be simpler.
I do this now for all my personal projects, in my opinion it's simpler, faster and closer to pure JS.
dobladov··on Ask HN: What productivity tools do you use?
I use https://foambubble.github.io/foam/
It has all I want for a note-taking app, since it's my editor all of my shortcuts and snippets work, the notes are simple markdown that I can back up easily using git.
To start a daily note, I can write /today and it will set the correct date.
In combination with the Excalidraw extension I can create new digrams, simply by ending the files with .excalidraw.png and quickly embed them on any markdown with preview, while being editable. https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=pomdtr.e...
Linking notes and having a connection graph, like obsidian it's incredibly useful, making me go back more often to old note to remember or refine them.
In this documentary about Kawasaki, they also mention that everyone has to expend some time in the production line, it seems like a great way to motivate your engineers to improve the process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tg32DlveFiE
dobladov··on Ask HN: How do you exercise?
I do some daily exercises at home, around 20 min of callisthenics (bar, handstand, sit-ups...) mostly exercises from the book "Get Strong with the Kavadlo" but without actually following their program which I recommend, it would just take more time.
Usually unless the weather it's too bad I commute to work by bike not much distance, but it makes me active in the morning, on weekends I usually walk in the forest with my girlfriend for 1 hour or two.
I always had problems to gain weight, and In general don't eat sweets or greasy food, recently after increasing my natural protein intake, basically eating more eggs no extra powder protein, I'm 1 kg down from my perfect weight.
dobladov··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2022 and recommend for 2023
This book gave me mixed feelings as well, spoilers ahead.
On the good side, I think the author is brilliant, the way he created this new race of aliens, how he explains their physiology, faster than what it takes for your brain to process images, their camouflage, how their body is a whole lens, their communication system, their way to accumulate energy, etc... that was amazing and worth reading.
On the bad side, I hated every character in the book, it's maybe expected to not like the protagonist with his "lack of empathy", but who makes a crew of such a bunch of uncooperative people, is like nobody wanted to do their job properly; All their conversations felt hostile, not sure how to put it, but I would expect a sense of wonder, curiosity and cooperation from the people sent to do a first alien contact.
The part that I disliked the most is how the human ship felt so abstract, they are in a ship, but everyone stays in some sort of independent tent, I thought this was my problem maybe I missed some key information about it, but after reading some critics, other people also have this feeling of disorientation.
Overall, it's worth it if you really like the genre, but not a must in my opinion.
dobladov··on YouTube Transcript – read YouTube videos
They seem to have moved the functionality to the end of the description, and there you can find the "Show captions" button.
The extension I made to export the transcript was based on this YouTube functionality, I should update the instructions now.
dobladov··on Ask HN: What is something you built but never marketed?
I was inspired by this tool, http://www.randomhacks.net/substudy/ It required to cut the video, with a lot of processing, cli knowledge and to storage the cut videos taking a lot of space, my idea was to make the process as lightweight as possible, the outcome of the extension it's a CSV with the marks for when the video starts and stops for each sentence, it has a negligible output size in comparison and can be used in low-end computers.
You described the functionality perfectly, I made it as a tool to have custom cards for practising languages without having to be locked in any platform, in my opinion language platforms are very bland with their spoken lessons and only have perfectly pronounced sentences, with the tool you can practice more real and engaging topics for yourself.
Another usage that some users commented was to use it as a learning tool for lectures and presentations, that's why I included a merge subtitles functionality recently, so the cards can hold more information as opposed a single sentence.
dobladov··on Ask HN: What is something you built but never marketed?
I made a tool to export YouTube subtitles directly into Anki without downloading the video, it must be useful since it even got me a job offer by one of the users (pretty famous person).
I never did more marketing than a Reddit post when the proof of concept was made. Coincidentally, I've worked on it recently and added some useful functionality.
And on top of it, they make it look like there's an unread notification in the tab.
dobladov··on Ask HN: Does anyone care anymore what Google demos in IO?
I don't think it has to be one or another, I'm completely happy with my Sony headphones, the Bluetooth never failed to pair, they connect about the same time it would take me to plug them.
If they run out of battery, I can plug them, yes recharging takes time but it can be done when they are not in use.
dobladov··on About Safety Mode and autoblock by Twitter
> unwelcome interactions
I guess they would block themselves when I get notified with tweets of people I don't follow.
dobladov··on Ask HN: What do you do to jump start your brain in the morning?
My problem wasn't so much about waking up, but what I did before going to bed; I would roll in bed for hours without getting any sleep, check my phone and think about everything.
I decided to leave my phone outside the bedroom and never taking it (no exceptions) and go to bed regularly at the same time, after a few days by body adapted and I'm having wonderful sleep again, to the point I can remember my dreams again.
All the numbness that I used to have in the mornings is gone, also I don't take any coffee or tea.
