dntrshnthngjxct··on Meloni's push to revive nuclear power runs into Italy's old ghosts
Germany will still rely on coal for at least the next four years[0], and they are even pondering about opening more plants [1]. I have my reasons to be cautious on fully relying on renewables.

Do you have any idea about how to store, or discharge, surplus solar, or how impactful wind turbines have been for local people without them getting anything back but losing agricultural land (Look at Sardinia and Apulia)? You make it sound easy, but none of what you said is reliable enough. Nuclear must be there as a baseline, at least for industrial purposes.

Then disappear into the night, others still value having descendants above economic calculus.
dntrshnthngjxct··on Why is southern Italy poorer than northern Italy?
Up north the services are just better. I have also read about LEP (essential service levels), the ones down south are disastrous, especially in the worst backwaters. Culture is downstream from that. People down south are neurotic, bent on "survival" over building up, and as such their choices are less optimal. There is no need for apocalypse, because in some cases the South of Italy has already gone through it.

This is just a lazy argument: polities build their infrastructure also based on resource extraction, but from that economic opportunities follow, so people and communities gather around them making infrastructure also useful for them. It's like saying roman roads were bad because built by the empire, when even after centuries it fell, they were used by the locals. The problem is that there was no know-how passage, not that said infrastructures exist, and if anything they are still useful to them.

Inspiring, Nietzchean even.
dntrshnthngjxct··on The L in "LLM" Stands for Lying
because you need to consider the context window, thus separate the prompts by task. Separating by tasks and planning things out is still your own work, no AI can replace that. assuming you do that properly, AI-generating the code may save you up to 15% of your full work time. Please reread my comment: "If you do not plan out the architecture soundly", planning includes breaking the task down and make multiple prompts.

Our job is to break problems down into simpler ones until they are easily solvable, and if a machine simplifies the last steps, it is fine.

dntrshnthngjxct··on The L in "LLM" Stands for Lying
If you do not plan out the architecture soundly, no amount of prompting will fix it if it is bad. I know this because my "handmade" project made with backward compatibility and horrible architecture keeps being badly fixed by LLM while the ones that rely on preemptive planning of the features and architecture, end up working right.
dntrshnthngjxct··on Ask HN: How are you all staying sane?
I have plans.
dntrshnthngjxct··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
No, it's not about "not all men", it's not about men as men at all, it's about violent people not being stopped. You assume the worst of us, while we keep assuming the best of you. Women commit violence almost as much as men, but it's underreported because you simply don't have the physical strength to hurt us to the point of being able to report you.

How many times I had to hear the news about a kindergarden teacher beating up young pupils as a punishent? Hell, I was one of those kids, when physical punishment was still accepted, but I don't see mothers and kindergarden teachers being assumed as "child beaters". I'm tired of this rethoric, and I refuse to engage with you further, as you consider my male existence as an inherent threat and dehumanize it.

dntrshnthngjxct··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Believe me, us men are not as "lonely" as you think. We can very easily be friends with each other, it's you who has to stop treating us like we're douches by default. We don't bite.
dntrshnthngjxct··on Cloudflare threatens Italy exit over €14M fine
AGCOM is a bane on Italy's internet. Anyone who defends them doesn't understand the harm they cause to the rest of us, and all because Big Football doesn't want their peons to watch overpriced football matches for a more reasonable price.

I say this because the paid services are terrible, and pirating makes things almost too convenient. So it's not even a question of competing with a "free" product, but competing with something that does better and it's cheaper.

dntrshnthngjxct··on The housing market isn't for single people
Good.
