dntrkv··on DevOps: An idea so good, no one admits they don’t do it
"Great UX"

If HN had such great UX, there wouldn't be multiple browser extensions (and clones) that focus solely on fixing the UX. I'm not saying the UX is terrible, but I wouldn't call it great. I think the best term for it would be "consistent." It's basically Craigslist. It's fine if you've been using it for years and have adjusted your behavior to work with its quirks, but it does not provide a smooth experience that would work for a community you're starting today.

dntrkv··on Housing is at the root of many of the rich world’s problems (2020)
That is one reason, but there are many.

* You get to option the car with exactly the features/colors you want.

* People will pay a premium for something brand new.

* Financing for used cars usually carries a slightly higher interest rate.

* The actual cost at the dealership can vary significantly depending on the make/model/dealership

dntrkv··on Hocus focus: how magicians made a fortune on Facebook
I've seen those videos you are talking about but I think they're all made by the same group. I don't think it's necessarily a "trend."
dntrkv··on TikTok and the Fall of the Social-Media Giants
> Social media and Websites in general are like TV shows or recording artists

I don't think this is necessarily true. All of these social media companies serve different purposes with a focus on different types of content. When a new content format appears, users will flock there until they either get bored or a competitor iterates on that format and provides a better experience.

The first era of mainstream social media was really kicked off by Myspace, which was overtaken by FB only a few years later. Though, I think attempting to draw parallels from that era to today is foolish. Myspace gave users way too much control which made their site completely unusable. The app was also just flat-out broken in many places. They drove their own users away. There also was no young vs old divide there, in fact, the average age of FB was probably higher than Myspace.

Instagram threatened Facebook with their focus on "good" photography taken in the moment, tagged to specific locations. Facebook quickly acquired them but both apps continued growing and retained much of the same user base for a long while.

Snapchat launched after Instagram and there were similar talks of them killing Instagram, but then Instagram launched the same functionality and overtook Snapchat, bringing many of those younger users into their network.

Now we are seeing the rise of TikTok with their top-notch recommendation algos and short-form video content. In this case, I think Instagram moved too slowly in cloning TikTok's experience/content, but it's still too early to tell what will happen.

As another example, take a look at Reddit. It's been on a steady rise since its inception. There was Digg at the beginning, but again, they (like Myspace) were responsible for their own demise. It was not a cultural battle between the young vs old. Reddit has maintained their existing demographic, while consistently keeping the younger generation engaged. In Reddit's case, they are the best aggregators of content so that's where people go.

My point is that this idea that younger users just want to use a different social network to define themselves or get away from the older generations doesn't prove out in the records. It comes down to different experiences that facilitate different types of content. If the existing players are able to improve on that experience that results in the same (or better) level of content, they can steal those users back (or in the case of Reddit, achieve such dominance that nobody comes even close).

dntrkv··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results
Not only that but Apple commits to their products. Apple Watch v1 was pretty meh, but they kept at it, iterating year after year, until I finally pulled the trigger on one because it had the functionality that I was looking for.

All the other companies are constantly rebuilding their products from scratch, or dropping them entirely. Apple sets a vision and just continually works toward executing on that vision with small advances every year. That’s why users love them.

Not supporting the guy, but just pointing out that he doesn't actually believe his claim. He's an activist.

dntrkv··on Google fires engineer who called its AI sentient
Watch his interviews. He’s doing all this to make a point about companies not taking AI ethics seriously.
dntrkv··on US Air Force connects 1,760 Playstation 3's to build supercomputer (2010)
You think Sony didn't know the Airforce was doing this? It's not like they walked into Walmart and purchased 1,760 PS3s. It had to have been a direct purchase from Sony.
dntrkv··on EU Digital Markets Act, aimed at Google, Apple, Amazon, approved
I don't know how anyone would think that timeline is in any way possible. Not gonna happen.
dntrkv··on High property taxes are good
And if you built even a conservative 5 story building, it would generate significantly more value.
dntrkv··on DALL·E now available in beta
So $1.30 for getting a result that would have cost how much to pay someone to make? Not to mention the 59 other variations you would have.

Spam advertising is about to reach whole new levels of weird.
dntrkv··on U.S. transition to 988 suicide and crisis lifeline begins Saturday
How will you lose your children? How will you lose job offers? Children aren’t even taken away where there is known abuse going on. Lose job offers? How would a company even know you were seeking help?
dntrkv··on FCC proposes to increase minimum broadband speeds to 100 Mbps
Or 4g/5g. I bought a place way out in the boonies and I’m getting 70 down with a 4x4 MIMO antenna, no data cap. Without the antenna it would be <5 down.
dntrkv··on FCC proposes to increase minimum broadband speeds to 100 Mbps
Why not just tether to your phone? It would be way faster than monkey brains.
dntrkv··on Looming natural gas shortages has the EU scrambling for solutions
If we wait for our grid capacity to improve before we transition, we'll be waiting for decades to come.

We need to quickly transition now to force the government to fund improved transmission and supply. Our governments aren't great at building things for future needs, but when your citizens are in danger of going without electricity, you bet your ass these politicians will do what needs to be done.

As an example, look at the mRNA vaccine development.

dntrkv··on Manhattan rents cross $5k threshold for first time
Kinda hard to look up when someone misspells the word.
dntrkv··on Meta Accounts: A New Login for VR
I think you're reading way too much into this.

Meta has a VR platform and needs some form of auth. Reusing their existing auth was the lowest friction approach both in development and user experience.

I doubt they care very much about recruiting into their platform through VR. Their main business goal with VR is to own the app marketplace through Oculus Store. So far, they are far ahead of anyone else in the space.

dntrkv··on Meta Accounts: A New Login for VR
> why would anyone trust Meta/FB on anything they say or trust them with your data

You should probably ask the ~4B people that use their services.

dntrkv··on Meta Accounts: A New Login for VR
> That was the point of them buying Oculus. They never tried to make money on the hardware.

They're not trying to make money from the hardware just like most gaming console companies don't make money from the hardware initially. Meta is trying to dominate the VR app market and make money from the Oculus Store. They'll probably take a similar approach to the App Store and Play Store.

dntrkv··on Extreme heat, drought will permanently scar California and its social fabric
We don't need desal, we have plenty of water for people to live here. The vast majority of water goes to agriculture. If we were just a bit more selective in what we farmed, we could reduce our water usage by a significant amount.
dntrkv··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
I don't really have an issue with the way the senate is setup, since that was intentional. My issue is with the house, where we are supposed to have equal representation, but don't.
dntrkv··on Ask HN: How to navigate an interview where the interviews has it against you
Many times you are being interviewed by a random person that you might not even work with.

Such a tiring take...

Nobody is reinventing PHP or RoR development. What is happening is the community taking all our favorite parts of these stacks and combining and implementing them in ways that facilitate a dev experience that we could only have dreamed of back in the PHP/RoR days.

Tesla has been topping the list in terms of buyer satisfaction for many years now. They have their issues, but people love them.

I think the fame and power has gotten to him. Plus, he spends way too much of his time engaging with people on Twitter. I think his experience on that site has warped his view of the world. It's also amazing to me that someone in his shoes takes time to respond to randos replying to him.
dntrkv··on TSMC Reveals 2nm Node: 30% More Performance by 2025
Way to misrepresent that paper.

The US does not want to destroy TSMC. There was a paper advocating for a scorched earth policy to deter China from invading Taiwan.
