dnate··on ‘Product engineers’ vs ‘Software engineers’ in startups

dnate··on Europe is edging towards making post-car cities a reality

Lets agree to disagree

dnate··on Browser extensions are underrated: the promise of hackable software
That has been the reality for the Apple AppStore for many years. Seems to not have hurt them. And Chrome has a much larger market share (or browser share) than iOS has.

As long as you have that, you can pretty much do whatever you like to the devs as long as you don't piss off the users

dnate··on I thought I made a hard game and then speedrunners destroyed it
have you played the sequel n++? I think it's a worthy successor with an amazing soundtrack. (if you are into electronic music that is)
dnate··on Scientists 'speechless' at Arctic fox's epic trek
I couldn't find that info anywhere in the text so I assume it's a remark trying to point out a problematic animal-abuse like aspect of this research. Which I do not see
dnate··on uBlock Origin 1.20
Does it exist / work on iOS?
dnate··on The Dark Side of Dark Mode
for websites I can't recommend the browser add on stylus enough.

Slack not having a dark mode is also a thing I don't understand.

dnate··on Unlimited Google Drive storage by splitting binary files into base64
If you have a significant problem with waking up one day 100% google free, you are already in trouble.
dnate··on 'Passengers are afraid of this airplane': How Boeing is handling 737 Max problem
The way I see any future problem in the Boeing 737 max problem go is this:

- Pilot notices plane going down

- Pilot radios Tower: "We are having the Boeing 737 max problem. How do I solve that again?"

- Operator looks at post-it note on his monitor: "Well, you do <step 1>, <step 2> and <step 3> to disable the faulty MCAS

- Pilot: Thanks

Joking aside, I think almost every pilot has by now at least heard about the problem, and will at least read up on it when they find themselves in a cockpit of a 737 max. If I understood correctly the biggest issue was that pilots simply didn't understand what was going on with their plane and why it was dipping it's nose. Now the MCAS is probably the first thing they will check.

I am not saying that the way Boeing is handling this is ok, just that realistically this issue is probably not going to cause another crash.

dnate··on When Microsoft's eBook store closes, your books disappear too
aren't those still mainly activated on steam?
dnate··on Teardown of a 50-Year-Old Modem
I tried to find a condescending remark. What did you find condescending about this article?
dnate··on Lyft prices IPO at top of range
I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to finances. But isn't it possible to bet against a stock? As in someone promising you to buy stock X at price Y at future date Z? So when the stock dips, you make money.

If yes, and this is such a clear cut case (again, I know very little about finances, just going of the comments here), shouldn't this be easy money? Hell, I would bet against it if I had any betting money.

dnate··on Morgan Freeman Converts His 124-Acre Ranch into a Giant Bee Sanctuary
For those who were wondering:

124 acres =~ 0.5 square km or 50 hectar

so pretty big

dnate··on A Three-Day Expedition To Walk Across Paris Underground
IMO it is not a good thing that that venue had to close. But I guess that is the time we live in now. Much safer = Much better
dnate··on Telegram gets 3M new signups during Facebook apps’ outage
There is literally no downside to end-to-end encrypting text messages. So it should be default. It is just harder to implement technically.
dnate··on Reddit is raising a huge round near a $3B valuation
The only thing that still keeps me there is old.reddit.com

If support for that ever gets removed, I'll be gone as well.

dnate··on Bird CEO on scooter startup copycats, unit economics, safety and seasonality
no, government should pay in both cases as is the norm in most developed countries.
dnate··on Did Finland’s basic income experiment work? [video]
I'm very much interested in the findings. There is probably more to it than this 5 minute video can show.
dnate··on A “gold standard” study finds deleting Facebook is great for your mental health
For those not ready to completely delete their facebook account yet, I recommend:

1. deleting the app

2. Using a custom facebook style (like this one [1]) which deactivates the news feed. That way you can still use it to check your messages occasionally and have to actively make the decision to scroll through the news feed by deactivating the extension.

3. Deleting messenger once you have told all relevant people that you will be less reachable through facebook, more through email / signal whatever alternative you use.

I have been using facebook less and less that way and realized how often I was mindlessly scrolling through the feed.

dnate··on Boeing 787 Suffers Rare Dual Engine Failure on Landing
it should make a loud grinding noise though,
dnate··on Google’s also peddling a data collector through Apple’s back door
Yes, I think this comes with the tech side of this platform. Many developers still dream of a job at google and would take it in an instance. You would need a lot of mental gymnastics to call out googles evil practices regarding privacy at the same time.

In my non-tech circle of friends both are equally regarded to as evil spying megacorps.

Google Chrome
dnate··on Google’s also peddling a data collector through Apple’s back door
We don't allow poor people to sell one of their kidneys for cash.

I know this is not the same as privacy, but consider it when saying "is consent not enough anymore"

dnate··on Homebrew 1.9.0
Most likely. I still remember the incident where I upgraded my system wide python installation manually and had to reinstall mac os
dnate··on Sobriety startups shaking up the 12-step model
> "We're not proponents of complete abstinence. There probably is an amount of drinking that's OK," LoConte told NPR in June. "But from a cancer-prevention standpoint, drinking the least amount of alcohol possible would be the best strategy."

I always found defending your drinking with the "a glass of wine a day is good for your heart" study a bit lame. But advocating abstinence because no level of alcohol is safe is very narrow minded as well.

dnate··on Slow Software
We have been using jira as a very simple issue tracker with 3 users and the standard backlog, selected for development, done workflow.

Load times are atrocious. It's the slowest website I have ever seen. Maybe facebook is slower, but I don't use that as often.

dnate··on Video Games in East Germany: The Stasi Played Along

If everyone did it, it would "scale" pretty well.
