Object Thinking by David West.
dmux··on Ask HN: Any good resources for finding software jobs abroad?
Any more examples?
dmux··on Basic Flashlight Tutorial
NSFW Warning: Had a popup appear with nsfw content on it.
dmux··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
>"If you keep doing what you've been doing, you'll keep getting what you've been getting."

In George Carlin's skit about not voting, he says "garbage in, garbage out" when referring to our politicians. We get what we deserve.

dmux··on Can We Put the 16GB “Pro” Myth to Rest?
>Try prototyping applications using map-reduce for huge datasets.

Yep, a Spark job I was running recently used up my Mac's 16GB rather quickly.

dmux··on Realistic alternatives to Apple computers
The webcam location is ridiculous. I had a coworker who had an XPS and whenever we were video conferencing he had to avoid all typing as his hands would occult his face.
dmux··on Instapaper Premium is now free for everyone
This doesn't really sound like it was their fault.
dmux··on Racket v6.7
Your comment about quantity over quality rings true for me. I wish there was a simple page in their docs that organized all the functions in a more readable format. Is there a function discovery feature as there is with Ruby?
dmux··on Most Germans don’t buy their homes, they rent
Why not rent it?
dmux··on Google Has Dropped Ban on Personally Identifiable Web Tracking
They may be commuting by bike or foot.
dmux··on JDK 9 release schedule
Are people manually writing getters and setters? Every Java IDE I've used has the ability to generate them for you.
dmux··on Taking PHP Seriously
No input validation for one, possibility for SQL injection is another.
dmux··on Taking PHP Seriously
Trivial for those who read HN perhaps.
dmux··on Visual Studio Code 1.6
Perl still has an active community, it's just not as big as some others. Perlmonks.org and /r/perl are fairly active.

(I'm sure you're aware of this, I just didn't want to leave the impression there's _no_ community.)

dmux··on Moral Machine
Why not redesign cars to make them safer to pedestrians during collisions? Many have already been introduced: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedestrian_safety_through_vehi...
dmux··on Vim Misconceptions
Just learned about Larry Tesler [1] and his fight for modeless software yesterday.

dmux··on I Am Sam Altman, President of YC Group. AMA
I'm interested in this as well. Doesn't this go against Rob Walling's advice in "Start Small Stay Small" as well as Peter Thiel's advice in "Zero to One"?
dmux··on Investing for Geeks
How would you go about doing something like this in a booming housing market like the Boston area?
dmux··on Ask HN: How to Learn OOP
I'd highly recommend Dr. David West's "Object Thinking" book. It does an excellent job of (1) describing how most programmers who use an OO language fall into writing "small Cobol" programs and (2) how to avoid this.
dmux··on Crystal: Fast as C, Slick as Ruby
You mention learning a lot about compiled languages, and mention afterwards being able to understand packages. How are those two related?
dmux··on Millennium Tower is tilting, sinking
Part of the clustering is planned: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Spine
dmux··on Tips from the Pragmatic Programmer (2000)
Check out Leo Brodie's "Thinking Forth"

I read both The Pragmatic Programmer and Code Complete (2ed) before Thinking Forth. The latter provides a wonderful software engineering foundation (in clearer, more concise language too).

dmux··on Mojolicious 7.0 released: Perl real-time web framework

dmux··on Rob Pike: Simplicity Is Complicated [video]
Wrong. He is most definitely talking about Perl.
dmux··on Why Software Outsourcing Doesn't Work Anymore
This is gold.
dmux··on Incomplete List of Mistakes in the Design of CSS
Complete list of mistakes in the design of CSS:

Do you actually know programmers who literally just take specs and implement them and have no thoughts or opinions about the larger context of what's going on?

Sadly, yes. I've found this to be the case with most outsourced developers I've managed. They follow the spec to the T even if there's a glaring issue staring them in the face.

dmux··on Ask HN: Anyone had experience with "feature creep" prior to launch?
First off, there's the "you ain't gonna need it" philosophy [0]. And secondly, how do you know they're "super cool" additions? Talk to your users and let them decide how valuable these features are.

dmux··on Fifth Amendment Flowchart
The latter is programming right?
dmux··on The microservices cargo cult
>they are defined on source code level and can be freely used in different runtime components...

To me, components and services are two completely separate abstractions. A component is a collection of code -- a module -- that can be duplicated and used in numerous different systems (much like a 5 ohm resistor). Updating a module in one system doesn't affect any other external system. Services on the other hand I think of as multi-tenant systems that are used to provide common functionality that is likely to change.
