dmoy··on Don't couple your Go code to GitHub
> Different projects depended on different versions of the same internal libraries, we had to...

This is one of the main motivations for using a monorepo with all third party dependencies imported all the way in, and only one version for everything.

Of course it causes a whole bunch of other problems and is kinda expensive to scale, so most places won't do it.

dmoy··on UK military jamming other nations' satellites to defend itself, BBC told
150 battleships?

Pretty sure the Spanish Armada was <150 total ships, of which only a small subset would be the big galleon things. (And then my knowledge hits a wall, idk what the difference between a galleon and ship-of-the-line/battleship is)

I'm not sure how much to trust the rest of that website.

dmoy··on Jobs Without LeetCode
> Senior Revenue Operations Manager - GTM Systems and Automation

Not an engineering position? What is your classifier based on? This doesn't seem super useful categorization

dmoy··on Jobs Without LeetCode
Unless the interviews are brought back onsite I guess
dmoy··on Jobs Without LeetCode
The vast majority of listings I scrolled through were jobs that wouldn't normally have a leetcode interview, given that, you know, they weren't jobs involving coding at all. Even when filtered to software development, the vast majority were not coding positions.

Any way to filter to that?

dmoy··on Column built an issuer processor from scratch
This looks like a self funded company. The founder is already a billionaire I guess.

(So transitively, funded by Plaid being a successful company in a similar space, and its founder then having capital to do other things)

dmoy··on Border agents can search cellphones without a warrant or reasonable suspicion
I mean... yea we also have some shaky interpretations of the 1st amendment (see especially, assembly), 2nd, 5th (e.g. the incredible pressure for plea bargaining), 6th (which, paradoxically, is a major reason for aforementioned pressure on plea bargaining, so I kinda get it), 8th given how bad some prisons are, arguably 10th (even if I am personally not a fan of the 10th amendment so much), and arguably still the 15th (though it's obviously orders of magnitude better than the first 100 years of its existence).

And also various other parts of the construction, like the interstate commerce clause does some comically heavy lifting.

dmoy··on T. Rex Had a Body Temperature of 97°F
I know you were talking about a mountain or something, but "climb to <altitude>" does make one think about this exchange which would be in feet, not meters:

"climb to FL20 and the flying dinosaur thing will break" could work though

Since, annoyingly, international altitudes are done in increments of 1000 feet (ish, handwaving)

dmoy··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
Not necessarily servers, just not into the register as a tracked transaction.

Tax fraud, essentially.

E.g. you go to the Minnesota State Fair, merchants may offer to not charge sales tax if you pay cash. It is shockingly brazen sometimes.

> How could a business possibly operate in this reality?

Extremely lax enforcement on the part of the specific US state's department of revenue

dmoy··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
US Bank for a brief period opened up a 4% card, but then closed it so quick that obviously the numbers didn't work out there.

2% seems to be a local maximum of cashback cards. There's a lot of 2% cards, and only a handful above that.

Makes sense?

27 tonnes of gold fits in a single container. You're talking about like 1 or 2 cubic meters of gold (for comparison, a standard 2TEU container is like 50+ cubic meters). And that'll fit as a partial payload in a single military transport aircraft. The actual flying of the gold isn't super interesting (not like there's roving piracy in the air), but the logistics of how it would securely get from NYC to airport etc is kinda cool.
dmoy··on [dead]
From the article it sounds like they moved 27 tonnes, not 86. (Most gold "moves" are just selling in one location and buying in the new, and eating the spread. Eventually I guess there's math showing the spread is large enough it's worth moving)

But yes, would be a cool read on the logistics.

dmoy··on Bonsai: Janestreet's UI Library
No, OCaml

Think node, except the other direction. They write their backend in OCaml, and then they also write their web ui in OCaml with a translation layer

Or think of gwt (java) awhile back

dmoy··on Bonsai: Janestreet's UI Library
Fair point

I guess JS doesn't have to care about this at all because they're not selling their UI to others, just making it in house for in house use

dmoy··on Show HN: How far do I have to go to run into 100k people?
That is a cool visualization.

Punched in my grandparents' town and a bunch of the slices stretched 1500km over three states away. A lot of the US is big and empty.

dmoy··on The Birth of the American 12-string Guitar
Sustain

in college a good friend was a very good Oud player (plucked, some number of strings.... more than 8? I forget), and it definitely sounds different from guitar due to less sustain. Clearer notes and chords, but they don't linger as long or loud.

Edit: apparently it's 11 strings? ok.

dmoy··on My two year old taught me constraint solving
So far as I can figure, it would not haha. There's a reason why it's still just a hypothetical on my backburner of interview questions

But you have to think about something after hours of brio.

dmoy··on My two year old taught me constraint solving
While similarly playing brio with a two year old, I thought about a different dimension not mentioned here - super loose tolerances make the search space really weird.

In true 2-year-old fashion, my kid would bend the rules as much as possible by literally forcing pieces to the edge of their tolerance to make things fit that shouldn't fit. 8 piece circle yea, cool, but with a sufficiently old brio set handed down for 40 years or whatever, you can totally make a 7 piece "circle" thing.

So I decided some day I'll craft an interview question out of that, to see if people can figure out a good way to map a set of pieces laid out with given tolerance ranges for piece, see if it can connect, etc. Haven't thought about it enough to really polish it for an interview, but some day.

dmoy··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
Moore's law for 10-15 years was more like 20-100x ram sizes, not 2-4x.

Performance, storage, etc is definitely getting better, but it's a different scale of improvement
