dmoo··on Ask HN: Apple maps vs. Google maps today?
I have Car Play so use Apple Maps a lot. If I am going somewhere new I check the route on google maps as well to see if they agree. I used Apple Maps a lot in France this year on holiday and always got to where I needed to go. Routes chosen were sometimes questionable in terms of using the best road but I have had this with a Garmin in the past as well. It's unfortunate that you cant download an area as you can on google maps but the new european data roaming directive has helped this somewhat.

dmoo··on Show HN: Teachcraft – Learn Python through Minecraft
Just for info here is the mod for Python and Minetest https://github.com/arpruss/raspberryjammod-minetest/tree/mas...
dmoo··on Show HN: Teachcraft – Learn Python through Minecraft
Re Minetest this works with Python if you install the raspberryjammod from GitHub

Also recently managed to get it running with @edu_blocks https://twitter.com/damianmooney/status/881158457671524353

So in general you can do anything with Minetest that you can with the raspberryPi version of minecraft.

dmoo··on Kids to learn how to code before high school in New Zealand
Seems like a whole bunch of things that basic coding might help with. eg '- follow instructions in a book to do a simple task' becomes write instructions in a computer to do a simple task '- write a letter explaining directions in a clear way' becomes describe how to use your program '- understand correlation is different from causality' debugging your program will help here etc.

Ireland raised the age at which people are entitled to a state pension. It's moving from 65 to 68. https://www2.deloitte.com/ie/en/pages/deloitte-private/artic...
dmoo··on London Rent vs. London Salaries
This is pretty common in Europe. For example income tax and social insurance contributions in Ireland would be greater than 50% of marginal income at this level. This money is used to fund services and fund the national debt.

dmoo··on How Scratch teaches kids to follow the hacker ethic
Can I recommend Minetest
dmoo··on How Scratch teaches kids to follow the hacker ethic
Scratch and its clones are a great way to start for kids without the problems of syntax errors. Everything always works. It might not do what you want but it always does something.

Kids at my local coderdojo enjoy beetleblocks which is like 3d scratch http://beetleblocks.com/run/ The files can be exported and used in a minecraft clone https://twitter.com/damianmooney/status/843594021024993280

Microsoft have just announced a block based code environment for minecraftedu https://youtu.be/3rKuSlgqePo

It seems like a way of coding that has really taken off.

dmoo··on Ask HN: How should I teach code to kids?
Have a look at Kano on the raspberrypi. Build and code your own computer https://liliputing.com/2016/03/first-look-kanos-raspberry-pi... It has lessons for Graphics, Minecraft, Music and the command line. See what interests them and then explore, if they like music then they will have fun with SonicPi etc.
