dmoo··on 'Whitest ever' paint reflects 98% of sunlight
For those that haven’t seen it I would highly recommend it.

dmoo··on Stop Spotify Surveillance
Would love to see the DPIA for this.
dmoo··on FileZilla now contains adware if you download from the official homepage
+1 for lftp. On windows I use it via Cygwin for scheduled tasks etc. FileZilla has a speed advantage over winscp but nothing like the flexibility.
dmoo··on The Irish Woman Who Shot Mussolini
Nationalism tends to have a different meaning in Ireland and while there is some anti immigration feeling on the rise I would suggest that it is small and entirely misplaced in a country from which many more people traditionally emigrate.
dmoo··on An ancient Greek approach to risk and the lessons it can offer the modern world
I describe this as the blamestorm. The focus is on an individual rather than how do we not do this again.
dmoo··on I believe US could see rolling series of “Ireland events” over next 2 months
Current data from Ireland https://covid19ireland-geohive.hub.arcgis.com/
dmoo··on What's so hard about PDF text extraction?
Probably preaching to the choir, but for me step one is to use popper tools. pdftotext -layout
dmoo··on 'Ugh fields', or why you can’t even bear to think about that task
Re 2. My technique is to do the easiest part first, somehow moving from pending to in progress helps.

For those who want to dip their toe into Ulysses

dmoo··on Show HN: I made a simple PDF text editor
I’m sure you’ve looked at it but I have a lot of success with pdftotext -layout
dmoo··on Open Location Code: An Open Source Standard for Addresses
If you enter the address in to google maps it will give you the eircode. The issue in Ireland is the non unique addresses in rural areas. The fact that the last 4 characters are randomly distributed means that a sequence for addresses on the same street is not something you can derive. You need to look up each in turn.
dmoo··on Show HN: WildDuck – Self-hosted modern email server
A million settings, but ASSP in front of postfix has worked well for me for quite a while.
dmoo··on Ireland blocks the world on data privacy
For some balance from the same publication the next day. Irish privacy regulator opens investigation into Facebook over passwords

dmoo··on Proton Technologies awarded €2M from the EU
Or for many of the organizations in question with your privacy
dmoo··on Questions
Will end-user applications ever be truly programmable? If so, how? How about adding some sort of block based scripting language line Scratch or Snap. Make it more approachable and encourage experimentation
dmoo··on Python in Visual Studio Code
What a joy Brief was back in the day. Could open huge files, lightening quick, macros, column select and replace, programmable and all on a single floppy.
dmoo··on Hottest Rain on Record: Rain Falls at 119°F in Imperial, California
It's just a unit of measurement, neither is more accurate, they both mean what they mean. Also it is surprisingly easy to switch. In Ireland we moved from speed limits in miles to speed limits in kilometres. It was easy and people adjusted without any problems.
dmoo··on GDPR for lazy people: Block all European users with Cloudflare Workers
Best hope there are no people using VPN’s
dmoo··on What’s Not Included in Facebook’s “Download Your Data”
This is why FB has moved data for 1.5b users back to the USA
dmoo··on Tech Giants Set to Face 3% Tax on Revenue Under New EU Plan
Not sure how Ireland is getting richer and richer on the back of this given there is very little tax.
dmoo··on A New Era of Batteries Spells Trouble for Gas in America
Pumped storage hydroelectric plants seem the obvious target to me https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumped-storage_hydroelectric...
dmoo··on How the Irish Teach Us to Die
My guess is that it is a function of her age. As you get older you know more people who get sick and die so it seems common.
dmoo··on Tech companies should stop pretending AI won’t destroy jobs
You could easily tax robot labor to ensure it wasn't competitive with cheap labour
dmoo··on What the Count of Monte Cristo Can Teach Us About Cybersecurity
Can I recommend the mini-series with Gerard Depardieu

dmoo··on How to Run Your Own Mail Server (2017)
Have you looked at assp, lots of parameters but does the job.
dmoo··on Google faces UK legal action for bypassing iPhone privacy settings to target ads
'so long as they are only jacking people a little bit at a time.'

or

so long as they are only jacking the little people.

dmoo··on All about whiteboard markers
Can also recommend furniture polish and a cloth. The polish also works great as a lubricant for a door that won't close fully without a shove. Small spray on the lock and it slides closed nicely.
dmoo··on Modern terminal-based text editor
Speaking of Borland does anyone else remember the Brief editor. Was my goto for about a decade back in the early 90’s. Highly configurable, macros, column select and easily opened giant files.
dmoo··on Kano’s next learn-to-code kit is a build-it-yourself laptop
If you have a Pi already and a kid I recommend an install of the os. They have really done a great job, learn the command line as part a game etc.
