dmingod666··on WebAssembly adoption: Is slow and steady winning the race?
very good alternative is wails

6-10mb single binary

use any frontend js tech you want

automatically go functions exposed to the js side so you don't need to think about making endpoints, it makes and uses a websockets between the binary and the ui

uses WebView2 and not chrome

dmingod666··on A coder considers the waning days of the craft
most impacted are technical consultants ( outside experts that merely provide high level consulting ) -- their recommendations will be scrutinized more closely
dmingod666··on Insider trade on Splunk acquisition?
Maybe it was just a member of Congress and thus no crime was committed
dmingod666··on The Fall of Stack Overflow
As a full time Dev. I'm on ChatGPT (paid) and use co-pilot.

My teams first go-to is ChatGPT as well. SO is no longer 'that site' to go to ( been on SO for 10+ years ). I have 0 love for that site. It was 'The resource' before, now it's just another site..

dmingod666··on Open source AI is critical – Hugging Face CEO before US Congress
I like the fact that he's still quite approachable on social media
dmingod666··on The Stupid Programmer Manifesto
You have things like rocksdb, SQLite etc that are simple have serialization-deserialization built-in, so no external app dependencies
dmingod666··on Video to video with Stable Diffusion
cool, I have the pro, haven't tried it myself.
dmingod666··on Video to video with Stable Diffusion
The 2$ adds up + thats an ephemeral environment and these things are super finiky to get working properly (dependency and initial setup + adding tools to your workflow). Plus there is a more of a craft like - ad-hoc approach to how you want to do things, plus a learning curve, with what tools and scripts you want to do or write simple stuff on your own -- runpod sounds good on paper but after a while, you then want AWS/Google VM so things are stable and your environment is sane and stable. Then if you calculate, you'll come up to a cost of buying a nice card in 6-10 monthly payments.. So if you want to play with it in peace you spend once and only worry about electricity costs :D
dmingod666··on Video to video with Stable Diffusion
No can't do it realtime. Each image would be about 20-60 seconds (depends on what you're doing with it)
dmingod666··on Video to video with Stable Diffusion
A frame is like 20-30 seconds for one pass on my 3090, you may have multiple tools and multiple passes.. say 60 seconds a frame x 300 frames about 5 hours -- 3090 costs 0.44$ per hour on runpod.. a little more than 2$

Or they could just use the models we are using right now and get the same effect, not like the models are going away anywhere
dmingod666··on Video to video with Stable Diffusion
You apparently can't use anything to do with automatic-111 webui from colab, don't remember the exact restriction but I hear even if you do a simple, print with the word it freaks out..

dmingod666··on How's the Stack Overflow strike going?
Same here, much more convenient to use than SO
dmingod666··on How's the Stack Overflow strike going?
StackOverflow is toxic and if I don't have to deal with that it's a plus in my book. Too much drama on for my liking.

Finding content is harder too, go through a Google search and 5-6 tabs before you reach an answer, ChatGPT is my first go-to tool for solving common stuff and stuff like syntax reference.

dmingod666··on Proposed SEC order to freeze, repatriate Binance.US assets
Wonder if SBF has something to do with this in the background
dmingod666··on San Francisco Homeowners Lose $260B in Value
housing as an asset/investment who's value needs to keeps rising is a big contributer to homelessness. If Dense affordable housing isn't created because of the vested interests of the home owners worried about their properties losing value then they are partly to blame..

dmingod666··on Notes apps are where ideas go to die (2022)
I think the blame should go to a lacking process where you review, reorganize your notes.

A regular stocktaking of planned action and choose to do or dropped stuff you wanted to do

Author misses a category of notes that are actively created as personal documentation for things you don't do often or keep forgetting. Those are human equivalents of a bash script

Say: "Install k8s on redhat 8.x"

Open this doc you've written, blindly follow steps you've done before, there is tremendous value in this.

Your future you and you are slightly different people, learn to keep the conversation going, don't blame the tech

dmingod666··on AI intensifies fight against ‘paper mills’ that churn out fake research
Fair enough, but this was a major 'event' in both tech and academic circles..

Funny that Nature publishes an article about fake papers and fails to mention the one model specifically trained exclusively on white paper to write (fake?) white papers..

dmingod666··on AI intensifies fight against ‘paper mills’ that churn out fake research
Not even a mention of the galactica model. I suspect the author probably isn't aware of its existence..
dmingod666··on Show HN: Capillaries: Distributed data processing with Go and Cassandra
Yea, gocql works fine.. the CDC on golang is pretty good as well

I asked for support on twitter for some specific load tests, go 2 detailed responses in a day.. only later did I realise, both by the CEO of the company! :D

dmingod666··on Show HN: Capillaries: Distributed data processing with Go and Cassandra
Surprised you didn't pick ScyllaDB over cassandra.. ScyllaDB has excellent out of the box support for Golang Change Data Capture and can handle much more load given the same hardware as Cassandra. It has nice integration with stuff like Confluent as well. Given ScyllaDB is mostly drop-in replacment I guess it would be quite straight-forward to swap it out if someone wanted, I guess
dmingod666··on You probably don't know how to do Prompt Engineering
I think the real value is in context setting for API based access (for app integration)
dmingod666··on You probably don't know how to do Prompt Engineering
There is an equivalent to this in full text search where you can give different weights to different parts of the query (solr).
dmingod666··on You probably don't know how to do Prompt Engineering
I don't even care about it. I just write natural language. I don't have time or the motivation to keep up with esoteric incantations and that too with a limited shelf life, that may be version or release specific.

I do think there is some value in putting the AI in the correct context role if you're using the API for some app.

dmingod666··on You probably don't know how to do Prompt Engineering
It's not about fun. Nuance is the key differentiator. Conscientiousness is (correctly, imo) valued because correctness matters (a lot).
dmingod666··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I made - A screenshot to text copied to clipboard - Another variant had translation from one of the local languages that I can't read to english - Built a keyboard identifier for windows that could know which USB keyboard the keypress came from and then suppress keystroke and then launch the program (differentiating keyboards is unnecessarily hard btw) - A python app that could pin any app 'on top' or change it's opacity %
dmingod666··on Not by AI
We as humans have had this argument with automated manufacturing, its a good reference point to predict human behavior.

Second is art itself. We have high quality art prints that a large portion of people are happy to buy. Artists themselves are happy to sell prints of their own work. That product is entirely machine made except for the initial knowledge work by the artist. I'm not making a art, not art argument. I'm saying, people are happy to consume manufactured content, companies are happy to generate it for them.

The argument that 'humans will stop producing and things will stagnate' is totally non-serious and doesn't even deserve a retort really..

dmingod666··on Loopholes in Google’s data safety labels
For one side it's an existential question, the other side its just a rounding error..

There is no explicit loss of value for Google, they save money + get more chrome users..

Now if MS comes into play or are already playing in the background, then is a totally different story..
