dmilicic··on Should you care about "Good Code" in 2026?
As a software engineer, I've always cared about writing good code because I wasn't writing it for computers, I was writing it for other people who also work on it. However, since AI took over a few months ago, I've had doubts about whether this is a wasted effort.

I've been back and forth on this, but after working on a few AI-coded apps, I have, for now, confirmed my belief that it still matters whether the codebase is robust.

Firstly, I believed that it does not matter what's under the hood if it works. But I found that I can't make it work without the code being robust, testable, and maintainable to a certain degree.

Therefore, I am linking my article that explores this a bit more and shares what I think are the three most important points that you should still care about writing good code, which are:

1. AI will train on it - the most long-term reason, most people won't care, but it does affect everyone

2. You still need to do the final touches - it's probably not a good idea to prompt for one-line changes, it's like calling an electrician to change the lightbulb

3. Software is never done, and it should be easy to change - AI will struggle with more tokens, and you with more time, if your code is not of good quality

Anyway, I am just sharing my shower thoughts and hopefully will start an interesting discussion.

dmilicic··on Page is under construction: A love letter to the personal website
I don't remember the last time I had so much fun building a web project than working on my personal website: https://dmilicic.com/

The spirit of doing what you want is exactly what inspired me to do it, it's not the best nor the fastest web but it doesn't matter, I simply wanted to do it in a different way (Flutter & WASM).

dmilicic··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
I've created and am still working on my portfolio page in WASM using Flutter Web: https://dmilicic.com/

To enable WASM properly you should be on the latest Chrome version since other browsers still have some issues supporting it, otherwise, it will fallback to canvaskit renderer which is slower.

I've written about the implementation itself here if anyone is interested: https://blog.dmilicic.com/posts/writing-a-personal-website-i...

I am a full-stack engineer specializing in mobile app development (Android & Flutter). I help create MVPs from start to release or add complex features and fix crucial bugs in existing apps.

dmilicic··on I wrote a personal website in Flutter Web, this my experience
I decided to write a personal website in Flutter as I wanted to test its limits as a cross-platform solution. I found the experience to be pretty positive and wrote an article where I talked about the more interesting things I wanted to implement.

I hope it's an interesting read!

All feedback is greatly appreciated.

dmilicic··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I'm working on my personal website (https://dmilicic.com) and the accompanying blog post about it.

I decided it was time to have a personal website as a software contractor and brand myself online as the state of IT is still uncertain.

dmilicic··on Ask HN: Resources/Steps for Becoming a Consultant?
If you don't know where to get clients or you don't yet know how to sell yourself, then I suggest applying to one of the premium developer networks like Toptal, Gigster, CodeControl or Pilot.

I found that selling yourself directly to companies as a consultant takes a different set of skills and requires more than just being a great engineer.

However, to get into these developer networks you only have to be good at what you do and their job is then to sell you as a great developer/consultant. You only have to know how to pass technical interviews.

At least that's my recommendation for when you are just starting out.

But to get great consulting contracts you have to pick a niche where it's difficult to find people and be good at it. For example, I got a large contract by just being good at doing bluetooth connections between Android and BLE devices.

PS: I have a referral link to Toptal, but you don't have to use it and can apply via regular means: https://www.toptal.com/#work-with-the-best-programmers-today

dmilicic··on Ask HN: How much are you earning as a freelance app developer?
Don't worry about that number. If you have ever passed a typical technical interview then I believe you can also get into Toptal.
dmilicic··on Ask HN: How much are you earning as a freelance app developer?
I actually wrote a comment which may help you: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14791665
dmilicic··on Ask HN: How much are you earning as a freelance app developer?
I'm an Android and Ruby on Rails dev and I've been working as a freelance for a couple of years now.

I am making quadruple the amount my peers are making in Eastern Europe while working less hours and remotely.

Most clients I get is through networks such as Toptal, which I would wholeheartedly recommend. I'm also a member of Gigster, which I can't quite recommend at the moment, and there is CodeControl and Povio labs which I would also recommend.

I think the best approach is to sign up for a number of these networks. It will definitely kickstart your freelance career and will help you have a constant stream of potential projects and offers.

However, do avoid websites such as Upwork or other networks which don't have a technical interview process as these are very likely flooded with extremely low-wage and/or low-quality workers. It is much harder to land a good client on these websites.

Here's my Toptal referral link: https://www.toptal.com/#work-with-the-best-programmers-today

But again, don't just apply there :)
