Just a nitpick - by 1926, about 20-30% of Bell exchanges were already automatic, on Strowger https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strowger_switch equipment.
dmd··on Twitter Viewer – View Twitter Without Account
Re the "land lines", I think the answer to that is not "keep 100+ year old copper infrastructure running" but "make our modern infrastructure as reliable as Ma Bell made it 100 years ago".

Of course, neither will happen, so there's that.

I'm envious of the time you spend where it wasn't already.

dmd··on Google Workspace thinks my domain is an email provider (2025)
I get this sort of thing constantly because my domain, 3e.org, which I have had for 30 years, is apparently impossible. It's either too short to be real, or starts with a number (obviously impossible).

And like the author, 90% of the time I can just disable their front-end validation and go on my merry way.

dmd··on MartyPC is a cross-platform emulator of early PCs written in Rust
No, it's being downvoted because (a) who cares and (b) you wrote a wall of text that makes you look like you have schizophrenia.

It’s always been bizarre to me how bad browsers themselves are at searching their own history. This looks great.

I'm mostly amazed the author didn't land in jail, which is the normally the response to reporting this kind of thing to authorities.

dmd··on How to disable or avoid intrusive AI
I'm not sure I've seen anyone drive further than about 10 minutes away without Google Maps in the last 5 years.

Or maybe everyone's misunderstanding your question?

dmd··on On AI regulation and messaging
To be fair, the vast majority of people are stupid, in one way or another.

Or do you believe that you are smart in every way there is to be smart?

dmd··on AI isn’t outthinking mathematicians, it’s out-remembering them
Same. I often feel like my brain is a Ferrari which has a 1 L fuel tank and all the windows are blacked out except for a thumb-sized bit in the passenger side rear window.

My digit span is roughly 4 - terrible working memory. And I have trouble remembering even important things like where and how my wife and I met - terrible long term memory.

I have compensated over the years with complex systems of note taking and journals and in spite of all the above I managed a PhD, but I every day of my life feel hampered.

dmd··on Strait of Hormuz Live Traffic Tracking
Given I spent hours timing my signup perfectly almost 30 years ago so I'd get #404, maybe you're the one being woosh'd.

I learned most of the best cursing I've ever done from my grandfather. He took pride in teaching his grandkids to curse.

He was involved in setting up the radar systems at Pearl Harbor, much good that did.

I'm so confused. Does the dev not know that this is what iPhones do by default?
dmd··on COLDCARD's Random Numbers Weren't

I know there's a way to do this with A\ powered apps like this, I'm sure there must be for OAI?

(By the way, you're exposing the key. So anyone can just use up that key for their own nefarious purposes...)
