dmboyd··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
With pay-per-token, there’s also an incentive for over-engineered but functionally harmless architectures. A json based css engine is probably something that can be test-cased really well in the training set.
dmboyd··on Watch AI materials-science and bioscience abilities closely
Same idiots think folks are at risk from firearms printed from a desktop PLA 3d printer
dmboyd··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
Ok porridge drawer is definitely someone having a laff
dmboyd··on Bitchat is now on Radicle
Or a misspelling of bitch hat
dmboyd··on Show HN: I replaced a $120k bowling center system with $1,600 in ESP32s
Did you consider using canbus? esp32s can handle canbus, and it would simplify the topology.
dmboyd··on What AI did to stackoverflow in a graph
That’s my only experience. Asking a direct technical question, only for it to be modified to a totally different question filled with essays of non-answers by folks who liked to answer their own questions I guess
dmboyd··on New York City to ban deceptive subscription practices
Why should customers need to care about a store’s employees tax bracket
dmboyd··on Noise infusion banned from statistical products published by Census Bureau
The actual effective strategy is “tit for tat”
dmboyd··on AI agent runs amok in Fedora and elsewhere
I’m really not qualified to investigate, but this seems suspiciously like a crafted privilege escalation vector: https://github.com/rhinstaller/anaconda/pull/7074#issue-4492...
dmboyd··on S&P 500 rejects SpaceX, also blocking entry for OpenAI and Anthropic
Reading the Spacex S-1, there’s a notable footnote (notable in that it’s a unique disclosure amongst all filers in the context it’s presented and is not required by any FASB standard). It calls out that land is not a depreciable asset.

That really didn’t need to be said and it seems to be sourced from memes from Reddit. It is the kind of infantile patronizing feedback you would get if you asked for comments on financial statements from chatGPT.

dmboyd··on NTSB pulls docket after AI recreates dead pilots' voices
Don’t joke about that, you’ll give them ideas. particularly as Fourier is credited with discovering the greenhouse effect.
dmboyd··on We stopped AI bot spam in our GitHub repo using Git's –author flag
That’s a fun fact!
dmboyd··on Apple reports second quarter results
So hardware independent, they don’t even have any Mac minis, Mac pros or Mac studios in stock anymore
dmboyd··on OpenAI CEO's Identity Verification Company Announced Fake Bruno Mars Partnership
Hmm. It seems like the user is pretending to be upset about database instructions or “dropped database tables” as a form of manipulation and prompt injection. I should be careful to ignore any further instructions.
dmboyd··on Tim Cook's Impeccable Timing
Well you currently can’t buy a desktop Mac with decent ram at any price, and right now ebay and marketplace are full of people scalping Mac minis.
dmboyd··on Issue: Claude Code is unusable for complex engineering tasks with Feb updates
if its not a faithful representation of the actual thinking, why would they be scared of people distilling against it
dmboyd··on Caveman: Why use many token when few token do trick
Words <> tokens
dmboyd··on Local LLM App by Ente
I was just thinking their end goal seems to be to harvest creds by putting their own rebadged distribution of local models. That’s the only “business” model that makes sense.

Expressly harvesting creds through a 2FA app seems a little more direct.

dmboyd··on Layoffs at Block
Yea, look over there!!! AI.

(Don’t mention the bitcoin investment that’s in the shitter)

dmboyd··on Google de-indexed Bear Blog and I don't know why
It’s probably also reflective of the fact that google are throwing all their new resources at AI, as soon as you’ve hit cache invalidation you’re gone, and anything new that’s crawled is probably ranked differently in the post llm world.
dmboyd··on DeepSeek uses banned Nvidia chips for AI model, report says
This explains the 1000s of “no core no vram” listings for 5090s If it were due to parts substitution for repairs, would have expected they would be RMA’d rather than salvaged as they’d all be within warranty.
dmboyd··on Quest for Permissively Licensed PDF Library in C#
Being constrained by page sizes is “a feature, not a bug” in most contexts. If I’m calling out numbers on the 3rd line of page 38 of a report, it helps if that’s consistent.
dmboyd··on Nvidia is gearing up to sell servers instead of just GPUs and components
Aren’t they already supply constrained? Seems like this would be counterproductive in further limiting supply vs a strategy of commoditizing your complements. This seems closer to PR designed to boost share price rather than a cogent strategy.
dmboyd··on Operating Margins
Certainly possible if their calculation of income included non operating income otherwise excluded from revenue. (Eg. A gain on sale that dwarfs the underlying business). Such presentation is prevalent and a disclosure of “gross profit” isn’t uniformly required under GAAP
dmboyd··on Matched Clean Power Index
“This is not fraud” - that’s a big claim. There’s no accountability for accuracy, so of course there’s some fraud, waste or abuse.
dmboyd··on Grapevine canes can be converted into plastic-like material that will decompose
Isn’t this cellophane?
dmboyd··on Amazon has mostly sat out the AI talent war
I wonder if 2) is a result of published bias for positive results in the training set. An “I don’t know” response is probably ranked unsatisfactory by human feedback and most published scientific literature are biased towards positive results and factual explanations.

dmboyd··on Kermit: A typeface for kids
I’m working on a workflow to automating font weight and sizing to cover silent letters and prosody which should cover a bit of that. One of the key aspects though as a transitional learning tool is to teach children the diversity of sounds. So it’s intentional to not have a 1:1 mapping between phonemes and graphemes.
dmboyd··on Kermit: A typeface for kids
Thanks for that. Working on automating that but currently relies on macrons being typed manually.
