dmamills··on Elon Musk to join Twitter’s board of directors
You want argument points to support the idea that Twitter is relevant to society?

It is the fourth most visited site on the internet. It has well over three hundred million active users. It was one of the main methods of communication for the last sitting president of the united states. It is worth more than three billion dollars. It is currently what this subset of society in this thread is discussing because we find it relevant.

dmamills··on Elon Musk to join Twitter’s board of directors
I don't know where the implication that society is dependent on twitter is hidden in my comment. But no, society isn't dependent on twitter, is it relevant to society? Certainly.
dmamills··on Elon Musk to join Twitter’s board of directors
This is the biggest thing to happen to twitter since the trump presidency. Both big for twitter, and awful for society.
dmamills··on The YC Winter 2022 Batch
This is completely my opinion, but I believe people are risking time and capital because they are motivated to get their money laundered cleanly, and at a stable exchange rate.

The Cutest YC Startup in the world can't wipe out the swaths of: illegitimate casinos, drugs dealers, and content for sale so awful I cannot describe it here. The foundational transactions the whole system stands on.

dmamills··on A lot of people are getting the OnlyFans story wrong
> These rules will basically require that OnlyFans (and every other site that accepts MasterCard payments) not only fully verify every user and every person who appears in every adult video, but review all posted content before publication, including real-time review of livestreams

It became extremely difficult to prove that there are not naked children on our platform. So we've decided to take our money and run.

dmamills··on Apple Music Announces Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio
You consume in a slower manner.

You use an example of your ability to stream a thousand tracks in a single day if you wanted to, I don't have the same aspirations, so I'd also not pay thousands of dollars up from to kick start it.

To answer your question of how do I curate a library, legally, is just over time. I have a lot of musicians I like, and when I find them, I purchase their music, and I listen to it.

I do it less than a thousand times a day however. But I've been at it for thousands of days.

dmamills··on The account of realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours
I'm fairly certain the President of the United States has a few more avenues available to reach his citizens than Twitter.

It's unfortunate that it may require more effort than just his thumbs, but I'm certain the title he holds at times calls for a bit more.

Doesn't track for me. I believe there can be value in things that I personally don't perceive value in.

dmamills··on I Miss Working from the Office
I don't know why this is being down voted, I find the idea that open offices are "inhumane" to be obscenely hyperbolic.
dmamills··on CEO of Uber: Gig Workers Deserve Better
Exactly, this is essentially 'thoughts and prayers' said euphemistically.

Luckily we have the average hacker news commenter to come in and fill us in on why billionaires aren't actually so bad after all. I just don't know what I'd do without this website sometimes!

dmamills··on Building all of our new mobile apps using React Native
The Shopify CEO is going to be pretty disappointed when he finds out all of those diamonds are actually just npm audit fixes, dramatically out of date packages, and strange platform specific behavior regardless of the "write once, run everywhere" tagline.

dmamills··on Apple Watch Series 5
This is true, the only reason I noted the LTE was because this gives me access to my entire Apple Music library on the go. Perfect for the indecisive listener like me! :)
dmamills··on Apple Watch Series 5
My previous watch that I used prior to buying the Apple Watch was a Garmin Vivoactive, which I used for marathons and 2 50K trail runs. It never came close to killing the battery on any individual run that's about ~6 hours of continuous GPS usage.

On top of that during a normal week of milage (~50miles) I would only take it off to charge once after my Saturday long run.

Regardless my point was more that I consider that solar technology to be much more deserving of the title of "innovative" regardless of it's performance (things get better over iteration) than an "always on display" something that all of my Garmin watches I've owned over the last decade have done.

dmamills··on Apple Watch Series 5
This is a big let down for me. I love endurance sports and currently use a S3+LTE with bluetooth headphones and it's the perfect running companion. I don't have to carry anything to track to run and listen to my music, podcasts, or audiobooks.

But I was really expecting more innovation from the "by innovation only" event. Garmin's flagship watch has a feature that extends the battery life by embedded TWO SOLAR PANELS into the display. That is innovation.

dmamills··on Google Employee Writes Memo About ‘The Burden of Being Black at Google’
Over 50 protests around the world. Thousands of people standing up against a horrible grim reality of unnecessary police brutality that ravishes their communities.

Privilege is seeing these events unravel on the television screen in front of you, and having your thoughts settle on "God, what an unnecessary traffic jam." Privilege is reading a story of a black man's struggling with the disconnect between what he and his coworkers find relevant issues, and picking it apart line by line searching for cracks for you large enough for you sit back and decide: "I have as much sympathy for those people as I do for the author: not much"

The only real irony that comes across to me is that your comments are basically just an extension what the author experienced with his coworkers.

dmamills··on Google Employee Writes Memo About ‘The Burden of Being Black at Google’
I imagine from his position it's very disheartening to see his coworkers have a strong opinion about the protests, and the horrible injustice that is an unexpected traffic jam. But have nothing to say about the wrongful death of a human being. A human being who was murdered and the murderers saw now consequences.

dmamills··on Net Neutrality Day of Action: Help Preserve the Open Internet
I'm glad this comment sits at the bottom of this post. It's reflective of how the zeitgeist actually cares about this issue.

The Battle For the Net website mentions a vast range of online companies who apparently stood in solidarity to take action on this day.

* Github: a blog post displayed on your feed.

* Etsy: Nothing.

* Kickstarter: Nothing.

* Netflix: Nothing.

* Twitter: Nothing.

* Vimeo: A featured video on the landing page.

* Reddit: A tiny blurred logo.

* Hacker News: A grey bar!

* Mozilla: Nothing.

* OkCupid: Nothing.

What a great display!

dmamills··on Net Neutrality Day of Action: Help Preserve the Open Internet
I know that HN hates "unproductive comments", but I feel my comment is as likely as effective of "raising net neutrality awareness" as the silly grey logo bar topping this website right now.
