dmalik··on Fire TV: Amazon to block piracy apps in the future
The ads and recommendations on Firetv sticks has been getting worse and worse. I tried modifying it to use a custom launcher but they keep breaking it.

I think I'm going to just trash it and get a Onn. 4k Pro and install projectivy on it.

dmalik··on People regret buying Amazon smart displays after being bombarded with ads
No need to connect or use any smart tv feature.

How much is your time worth? Apple TV is the best experience (not even close to FireTV) for the cost of it. There are ways to get completely ad free if you have time. I've been using a HTPC for close to 20 years for example.

dmalik··on Imgur pulls out of UK as data watchdog threatens fine
Staying out does both, is also the easiest and costs less.
dmalik··on A Typology of Canadianisms
In Ontario "two-six" is called a twixer
dmalik··on OpenAI asks White House for relief from state AI rules
> I've heard so many ridiculous stories about 'AI' that I'm at the point where I initially took this to mean the LLM and not the company had made the request.

Only through its human bots

> I expect that interpretation won't seem outlandish in the future.

AI human manipulation could be a thing to watch out for.

dmalik··on Best Buy and Target CEOs say prices are about to go up because of tariffs
> I’m sure I’m way over simplifying this, to the point of stupidity, but tariffs raise prices on foreign goods to encourage the sale and/or development of local goods, don’t they?

What about all the businesses that export products or the ones that rely on imports. Businesses go bankrupt, prices go up for everyone and less people have jobs.

dmalik··on How Flash games shaped the video game industry (2020)
I guess I should have prefaced that if it was made with responsiveness in mind and you took from factor into consideration. Anything can suck. Responsiveness was a huge issue back then not just for Flash.
dmalik··on How Flash games shaped the video game industry (2020)
It didn't suck. BlackBerry had native API support for Air. You could easily port a Flash game using Air and integrate any native APIs you needed. We gave phones and tablets away to any developer who did this. It worked in the browser natively too without the need to install an extension.

But fuck Adobe because they didn't give BlackBerry the latest runtime.

Adobe killed Flash when they bought Macromedia.

dmalik··on Google gifts a Free AI Coding Assistant to the developer community
When is the last time you tried Cursor? It definitely doesn't import libraries. It can if you prompt it to but you have control.

I find it works great it you prompt it one step at a time. It's still can be iterative but it allows you to tighten up the code as you go.

Yes you can still go yolo mode and get some interesting prototypes if you just need to show someone something fast but if you know what you're doing it just saves time.

dmalik··on Automattic Hit with Class Action over WP Engine Dispute
Not the only WordPress host and they have no obligation to anything for an open source project.

This story isn't about them it's about their customers who chose to use their service and how Matt chose to make them collateral damage. That choice has consequences which is what this is.

dmalik··on Australian Parliament bans social media for under-16s
The internet still exists outside of social media sites designed to keep you there. I hope kids under 16 get addicted to anything else and don't turn to social media when they're old enough.
dmalik··on Google reacts angrily to report it will have to sell Chrome
Elon likes to buy things.
dmalik··on Rim/Blackberry tales – reply all
Ya this definitely happened a few times.
dmalik··on Rim/Blackberry tales – reply all
Haha I was working there at the time. I don't remember how many emails came in but well over 100.

Emails were so abused there though. I would get over 100 a day that were work related. Think Slack over email.

dmalik··on Sanding UI
This is what design systems are for. You only sand UI when you're initially creating the component. Sometimes you combine components in different ways or need to make a one off. It honestly doesn't take all that long if you know what you're doing. A good design engineer is a specialist for this type of role.
dmalik··on Bill limits smartphone use in California schools
I thought the role of school was for teaching kids how to think.

Doesn't take much imagination to think how a viral Chase money "glitch" can get past common sense when kids ignore the lesson and doom scroll tiktok.

dmalik··on Ask HN: Do we need to pay billions in fees to Stripe, Block, PayPal and Visa/MC?
In Canada we've had email money transfer since 2003. It used to cost $1 if you had a different bank then the person you were sending to but now it's free. Generally only good for friends and marketplace items though. Can't use it for ecommerce.
dmalik··on A Rant about Front-end Development
Ya. This is why React is popular. It's just a bunch of decently good front end best practices. Popular, not the best X for Y but with easy replacements.
dmalik··on A Rant about Front-end Development
Well said. Also been doing this since the 90s. I still like discovering new sites, blogs and creative things people make. HN is one of the better sites for that.
dmalik··on A Rant about Front-end Development
I agree with some of what the author is saying but add about 10 years of experience. Been coding sites since I was a kid in the mid 90s (I was a web master). I have 10 years working on brochure sites but have spent the last 10 working on major SaaS.

Few things I disagree with:

- The content rant was weird. I've always worked with content designers, instructional designers, or good marketing copy people. Was that about semantics? Sure ya, SEO and a11y.

- Cascading CSS is great until you write a million+ line SaaS app and have 1000 devs working on the code. Then you need scope. The rant is specific to brochure sites.

- SSR. Weird. Do devs really think that? I guess I'm out of touch or my colleagues are better than most.

- A lot of rants seem to be ripping of jr devs. Show them the way! Very yells at cloud.

- CSS nesting I really like. Example of nesting elements inside a class is a hack that should not be done. Nesting is easier to read if done properly.

dmalik··on Merging Remix and React Router
Remix is just react router with a build system. They replaced the build part with Vite. So the core contribution to the community here is just react router.

If you watch the react conf video by Ryan it explains it all well.

dmalik··on Stable Diffusion 3
You'd have better luck with an LLM with HTML/JavaScript/CSS.
dmalik··on 46% of Americans didn't read a book in 2023
I assume that of that 46% most aren't reading papers or watching good informative YouTube. They're likely doom scrolling social media or watching entertainment YouTube.

Movies and games are fine if you're comparing to fiction and just relaxing.

As someone who does all the things, reading (even listening to audio books) feels different to me. I get more out of it.

dmalik··on Drivers using Apple Vision Pro headsets prompt road safety concerns
Even still an airbag to the face with that in won't be pretty.
dmalik··on Designer News is dead
I used to visit but stopped years ago. Just not enough content on the topic I think. My replacement has been sidebar which is nice because it a curated top 5 links a day. sidebar.io/
dmalik··on Apple's plan to allow browser competition dubbed unworkable
I love Firefox and would buy my first Apple phone if I could use it with plugins. Chomium without ublock on mobile isn't appetizing. Give me a choice!
dmalik··on Golden Rules of Interface Design (2013)
A lot of these rules are taken care of by design systems these days. If you're off developing your own design system or creating custom components the laws of UX are far more useful.

https://lawsofux.com/

Here are a few that relate to laws:

Strive for consistency - Jakobs law

Reduce short-term memory load - Millers Law

dmalik··on CSS Is Fun Again
I find caniuse to be a very good resource to check for these kinds of things. Here are the stats for nesting:

https://caniuse.com/?search=CSS%20nest

Aside: Shouldn't browsers update themselves these days? Any reason to turn this off? Seems silly from a security perspective.

dmalik··on StyleX – Meta's styling library
This looks interesting and I'll play around with it. It will be tough to replace CSS modules and plain CSS for my React apps though. CSS is so much better now. Did you know you can nest in CSS natively now? https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/CSS_nesting
