dlhavema··on AWS’s Share of Amazon’s Profit
I know a colleague that worked on Alexa stuff and he said they did use AWS infrastructure and part of his job was reducing the cost Alexa paid to AWS...
dlhavema··on TwilioQuest – A RPG game to help learn JavaScript
They are also built especially for developers and this lets more developers know more about their platform. I'm guessing this goes a long way to improving relationships in the community and just good PR for twilio as well.

Twilio was one of the first places that I used starter code added my credentials and ran it without any bugs, And actually they embedded the test credentials in the starter code for me so that was even easier.

dlhavema··on How we scrape 300k prices per day from Google Flights
Cool. I did not know that. Thanks for the clarification.
dlhavema··on How we scrape 300k prices per day from Google Flights
Interesting. A scraper scraping a scraper. I don't get what the value add is over clients just searching Google Flights directly. Not trying to be mean, just trying to understand.
dlhavema··on Ask HN: Moving from a startup to a big co, what should I be aware of?
We refer to the dead weight as riders. they're just riding along for the journey but they don't actually provide any actual value to the company. At a startup, those are the first people to go during layoffs or during other downturns. At a larger company they can stick around a lot longer.
dlhavema··on Ask HN: Moving from a startup to a big co, what should I be aware of?
The last 6 months I worked at a large for profit education company all I ever worked on or "released" were simple configuration changes. it was a struggle to find things to fill my day with.
dlhavema··on Database “sharding” came from Ultima Online? (2009)
I loved galaxies back in the day. I was online when the first Jedi was unlocked that was a momentous occasion.
dlhavema··on Play NES Games in 3D
I was hoping this was more of a 3d first person perspective ala Ready Player One / Oasis style. I would so throw money at that. Playing through Zork in VR First person style would be fun.
dlhavema··on SpaceX successfully launches two humans into orbit
Yes but sadly people are still people.. they will take their problems with them.
dlhavema··on Swift AWS Lambda Runtime
Ah foot guns. I miss them so.

But really, I've been struggling learning swift... I became the iOS developer with little to no experience.

dlhavema··on When SimCity Got Serious: Story of Maxis Business Simulations and SimRefinery
I have a similar starting point. Civilization was one of the first the only games my computer could play at the time. I remember racing in the middle school in the mornings to get some time on SimCity 2000 with my buddies. We had one city going for so long...
dlhavema··on America is stuck at home, but food-delivery companies still struggle to profit
Most Uber drivers I know do it full time that is a side job like pizza delivery kids. The difference is I think people think Uber is a full-time job.
dlhavema··on AWS services to avoid
This has been amazing for the ApiGateway swagger files. There is quite a bit of duplication and splitting it up let's us only write the common stuff one time.. error code handling, common request templates, etc...
dlhavema··on AWS services to avoid
That's a great use case for lambda. Small self contained scripts/jobs that don't charge you all day to be available once.
dlhavema··on AWS services to avoid
Yeah a swagger file broken up with multi-file-swagger npm module works great
dlhavema··on AWS services to avoid
The fact that some specific attributes or options cannot change after creation is hard too. Other than that, it's not too bad. But like you said, setting it up takes effort, but a lot of programming is getting to a non trivial hello world.
dlhavema··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
Super cool. Thanks for sharing
dlhavema··on Debt Collectors Are Transforming the Business of State Courts
The name/title doesn't always apply, true. But sometimes it really does.

Most blanket statements have flaws in them...

dlhavema··on Heat Pump Water Heaters
Right could we focus that? I'm not sure how much heat it is but I dont like the idea of the fridge just dumping heat into my kitchen while the air pumps push cold air into the same room
dlhavema··on Heat Pump Water Heaters
I guess I'm not privileged to have seen that and would mind a setup on my house. I'm in AZ
dlhavema··on Power vs. Speed: The Xbox Series X And PS5 are different animals
I haven't bought a console since the Wii. With xbox vs Playstation battles, do people often switch consoles, have both or stick to their favorite? It almost seems similar to iOS vs Android in some ways.
dlhavema··on Show HN: 2D Tilemap on Top of Jitsi Meet
Sounds like ready player one before the contest. When did it come out?
dlhavema··on April Is Canceled
Yeah I miss even the 10 minute drive home transition from work to home mode.
dlhavema··on One way to fight a coronavirus recession: $1k for every American
About 80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. So you are in the minority

dlhavema··on Steps to start homesteading from an experienced grower
I've done that 3 or so times now and each time it just sits there and does nothing. Would be super cool though.

I raid the neighbors citrus trees (with permission) and also prickly pear cactus fruit to make fancier lemonade.

dlhavema··on Toy commercials are being replaced by product placement and YouTube influencers
I remember transformers being one of the worst. Evey episode introduced new "characters"... Voltron was good, and then they needed a robot with like 50 cars that made up the big guy so there were more toys to sell.
dlhavema··on No One Gets Rich by Shunning New Cars and Lattes
I think the car rule is more often don't by a 50k car if you make 50k a year.

Also related, cars go down in value. They are cool to own but by no means an investment. They are a utility to get you around and more specifically to your job that actually does make you money. The biggest rule though they stated first is huge. If you are making 300k a year, buy that 50k car or save up for a relatively "short while" and get a 100k car.

dlhavema··on Ask HN: How do you process payments?
I worked with authorize.net in 2006/7 for a php driven lead gen site... that brings me back...
dlhavema··on Students defeat new 'Barnacle' parking clamp, skip fines and get free internet
Much better example. Thanks.
dlhavema··on Students defeat new 'Barnacle' parking clamp, skip fines and get free internet
No it's like renting a car for a daily rate to be returned any day by midnight, coming back to return the car at 11:45pm and having to wait till after midnight to pay and being expected to pay for another day. ( yes not perfect analogy, but same idea. You were ready to return it, and they were not )
