dkiebd··on My boss fired me over WhatsApp while he was on vacation in Honolulu
Damn what an insufferable person the author seems to be. I get it, what happened sucks for you, but maybe grow up.
dkiebd··on African Union joins calls to end use of Mercator map that shrinks Africa's size
I was thinking precisely that making Africa appear larger would make it even more evident what a waste of space it is. If I were African I’d rather try and go unnoticed.
dkiebd··on Toothpaste made with keratin may protect and repair damaged teeth: study
Why do you think he ran out of hair?
dkiebd··on KDE is removing all colorful third-party app icons from its Breeze icon theme
> Not because of aesthetics, but because Gnome is a pain for me to use and it's very hard, sometimes impossible, to configure it to be better.

That’s good, but not what I was discussing here

dkiebd··on KDE is removing all colorful third-party app icons from its Breeze icon theme
Gnome may not be perfect but it’s sooo much better than kde. kde is just awful, it’s an eternal mockup, as if they let the code writers also design the interface. They have no idea what they are doing. And they are so used to bad interfaces they have no idea what a good one looks like.
dkiebd··on KDE is removing all colorful third-party app icons from its Breeze icon theme
I disagree. macOS and gnome are really good. Even xfce is better than kde
dkiebd··on KDE is removing all colorful third-party app icons from its Breeze icon theme
Damn, those screenshots. It’s been so many years and everything looks so unpolished still. Wrong margins, wrong font size, bad font choice, etc. They really need a professional designer.
dkiebd··on Starlink announced a $5/month plan that gives unlimited usage at 500kbits/s
Almost all wireless plans have a cap on the amount of data you can download on top of the speed cap.
dkiebd··on It seems like the AI crawlers learned how to solve the Anubis challenges
Is it a security issue? I thought it was just the crawlers spending the energy in solving the challenges?
dkiebd··on Is air travel getting worse?
We have no idea how much that CO2 will cost to remove since we don't have the technology, and that is assuming that we need to remove it, so I don't understand why you think that is "way too cheap"?
dkiebd··on Iceland supermarket offering £1 reward for reporting shoplifters
And here I was thinking this was about a supermarket in Iceland.
dkiebd··on Is Germany on the brink of banning ad blockers?
It’s in the interest of the media which is what allows those politicians to stay in power.
dkiebd··on The U.S. grid is so weak, the AI race may be over
Sanitation and road infrastructure built during the Roman Empire is still in use today.
dkiebd··on Blurry rendering of games on Mac
How is unobstructed area, a term you just made up, better than safe area, a term that has been standard for decades?
dkiebd··on How to rig elections [video]
I live in a democracy, Spain, and the government controls the press through subsidies and ads. All mass media is losing money; our biggest media conglomerate has been in a hole of almost 1 billion euros for decades. The president of the country openly brags on TV about how he controls the public prosecutors. A former president (of the same party) changed the law so the government elects the judges directly decades ago.

Of course you will never hear about this because we are not Poland or Hungary, we did not have the audacity of voting the way they did :)

dkiebd··on Bluesky: Updated Terms and Policies
This completely depends on the moderation policies of the website. So, yes, the platforms are at fault.
dkiebd··on US national debt reaches a record $37T, the Treasury Department reports
Unironically. His passengers will produce more money working and/or spend more money buying. The taxi driver is a direct enabler of all of this.
dkiebd··on Meta accessed women's health data from Flo app without consent, says court
Users gave their data to Flo, and Flo then gave it to Meta. What repercussions do you want for Meta?
dkiebd··on [dead]
So when I visit a site in a language I don’t know and Chrome translates it for me then Chrome is editing the website?
dkiebd··on Porn site traffic plummets as UK age verification rules enforced
That’s a very glib interpretation of the message, bordering on the malicious.
dkiebd··on 1948: Catholic Church publishes final edition of “Index Librorum Prohibitorum”
Everything but reading the scriptures, huh? They are much deeper than “love your neighbour” I can assure you. It’s a thick book.
dkiebd··on This website is for humans
It is also a much different way of consuming recipes than what the overwhelming majority of users of the internet experience.
dkiebd··on This website is for humans
That information is also completely irrelevant since it doesn’t change the point of the article or the point of my response at all. Therefore an LLM omitting it is not an issue.
dkiebd··on We caught companies making it harder to delete your personal data online
I have downloaded my data with google takeout dozens of times without a single issue. Speed was very high (maximum possible for my connection) and never had a download error. I’m talking about multi-gigabyte exports of my email and my drive.
dkiebd··on This website is for humans
> The author saw a Google AI Search ad that could identify ramen from a photo and provide a recipe. They criticise generative AI for repackaging other people’s hard work into bland, soulless output, unlike trusted recipe writers whose work is tested, personal, and distinctive.

Has this guy ever googled a recipe and clicked on a result? The website is very likely to be a complete mess. And the recipe is also likely to be untested and simply made up for clicks.

dkiebd··on Geneva makes public transport temporarily free to combat pollution spike
> I always wonder at the way cities seem to bend over backwards for the worst technology for moving people ever invented, and don't dare do anything that deprioritizing the use of this technology.

I don’t get it - is your comment pro or anti public transportation :)

dkiebd··on Geneva makes public transport temporarily free to combat pollution spike
I completely reject the notion that direct democracy is bad because Politicians Know Better. It’s borderline if not completely authoritarian and frankly disgusting.

Maybe consider that Switzerland is one of the best if not the best country in the world because people can choose what they want it to be.

dkiebd··on 1948: Catholic Church publishes final edition of “Index Librorum Prohibitorum”
They don’t say it literally like that, but they say stuff that boils down to that. People who live wicked lifestyles are tolerated or even celebrated because obviously Jesus loves everybody (He really doesn’t).
dkiebd··on Blender is Native on Windows 11 on Arm
