dkiebd··on YouTube made AI enhancements to videos without warning or permission
He did it for attention. You giving him attention doesn’t help in any way.
dkiebd··on Ban me at the IP level if you don't like me
I love the snark here. I work at a hosting company and the only customers who have issues with crawlers are those who have stupidly slow webpages. It’s hard to have any sympathy for them.
dkiebd··on Good EU regulations
That doesn’t work for small issues like this, as well as you know. And the proof is that wildly unpopular things like this keep occurring. We don’t live in a democracy if it’s not like in Switzerland with their direct democracy where we can vote on all issues one by one. What we have is a joke.
dkiebd··on Good EU regulations
What percentage of citizens do you think support the blocking of websites for reasons of copyright? We have as much choice in the matter as we would have under Franco.
dkiebd··on Good EU regulations
But the government is much more of an enemy to me than my ISP, not to mention I can switch ISPs but I can’t switch governments.
dkiebd··on Europe's crusade against air conditioning is insane
The purpose of a system is what it does.

> Your internet provider can’t block or throttle websites. The open web stays open

That’s so false it’s not even funny. I live in Spain and there are a TON of blocked websites.

dkiebd··on Google did not unilaterally decide to kill XSLT
3. It will eventually be removed. Does it matter whether it will take three months or three years? Since I suppose none of the browser vendors will give developers money to change their xslt usage in codebases for something else.

5. Funny that we are talking about "info that leaks to the public" when we are discussing standards that may be important to billions of people, as if keeping things private was reasonable.

dkiebd··on 4chan will refuse to pay daily online safety fines, lawyer tells BBC
Most people in websites like HN have absolutely no idea what 4chan is, how it works, and what kind of things people post in there. It shows because every time you read a comment here about 4chan you are confused as to what website they may be talking about.

dkiebd··on Immigrant Population in U.S. Drops for the First Time in Decades
Funny because they would usually say that this couldn’t be done. Turns out it can.
dkiebd··on Home Depot sued for 'secretly' using facial recognition at self-checkouts
This mindset is what perpetually allows the violent to abuse the weak. What a violent person needs is a boot in the mouth. Or as many as necessary until he understands that’s not the way to behave. We are talking about people who generally have a low level of intelligence and do not understand anything else.
dkiebd··on I forced every engineer to take sales calls and they rewrote our platform
Well--well look. I already told you: I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?
dkiebd··on Home Depot sued for 'secretly' using facial recognition at self-checkouts
If you want to risk hurting someone whilst restraining him… Otherwise, it’s not worth it. What equipment are you talking about anyway, the nightstick? In my language it is formally called the “defensa”, implying that it can’t be used to attack someone.
dkiebd··on Home Depot sued for 'secretly' using facial recognition at self-checkouts
Don't know how it is in the states but in most places in Europe using violence against a violent person is likely to end up very badly for you, even if you are a guard and have the necessary permits and training. You are not going to risk being fined or jailed to stop some criminal from shoplifting from a store that is not even yours.
dkiebd··on Home Depot sued for 'secretly' using facial recognition at self-checkouts
What it requires is authoritarianism. It requires to do things that are wildly unpopular. I'm happy every time wildly unpopular things fail. It does not matter to me that those who want to implement authoritarianism think they are right. Even if they are, we have to have agency.
dkiebd··on xAI made people's conversations with its chatbot public on Google w/o warning
The article is bs as I supposed it would be. If you share a conversation and google is made aware of the link it will appear in its index… as expected.

No. You need to publish your name and full address somewhere in the page, which is even worse.
dkiebd··on Simulator of the life of a 30-year-old in the UK
I can go with your gut feeling or I can go with what I’ve seen in the market whilst looking for a woman to take care of elders in my family. Or with what I’ve heard from people in the hospitality and agriculture sectors.

It’s not that natives don’t want to work, it’s that immigrants undercut everybody. Not to mention what they’ve done to the housing sector of course. It’s unlivable. We run a country, not a charity.

Edit since I can’t respond anymore:

You assume two things: that you can’t work for less than the minimum wage (you can, since most elder care work is paid under the table) and that you can have a good life with the minimum wage (you can’t, unless you are okay with truly bad living conditions).

And a country has to prioritise the wellbeing of the natives first. You can’t destroy the lives of the poor and the young natives just to feel better about yourself.

That has never happened.

SSDs bricking themselves when you write to them is not a Windows issue.
dkiebd··on Simulator of the life of a 30-year-old in the UK
There are far too few people working in elderly care because it pays peanuts. It pays peanuts because immigration increases the supply of workers. With a limited supply of workers and increased demand as more people get older, those jobs would pay well and natives would want to do them. It’s basic economy. It works well in countries that are not a free for all regarding immigration.
dkiebd··on Simulator of the life of a 30-year-old in the UK
No, you mean to the benefit of pensioners.

Plus there are enough people to care of old people. It’s just that immigrants cause such downward pressure on salaries that elder care is not a viable job sector for most.

dkiebd··on Simulator of the life of a 30-year-old in the UK
And it’s actually good. Immigration does not do 30 year olds any favours. It only helps businesses and pensioners.

October, 2018: "In Europe, Speech Is an Alienable Right: [the European Court of Human Rights] upheld an Austrian woman’s conviction for disparaging the Prophet Muhammad."

>On Thursday, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) upheld her 2011 conviction for “disparagement of religious precepts,” a crime in Austria. The facts of what E.S. did are not in dispute. She held “seminars” in which she presented her view that Muhammad was indeed a child molester. Dominant Islamic traditions hold that Muhammad’s third wife, Aisha, was 6 at the time of their marriage and 9 at its consummation. Muhammad was in his early 50s. The Austrian woman repeated these claims, and the Austrian court ruled that she had to pay 480 euros or spend 60 days in the slammer. The ECHR ruled that Austria had not violated her rights.
