djoksimo··on Show HN: Walk in and out of conversations as you would IRL with up to 25 people
Hey HN,

Danilo here, Co-Founder of Scena 360 (https://links.scena360.com/ImdC13) and Software Engineering student at the University of Waterloo.

Today, I'm super excited to announce that we just launched some monumental upgrades to the Scena 360 Platform. Now, users can meet up with up to 25 people/space for $0 and up to 100 people/space for only $20/month.

We made these upgrades to give attendees more freedom to "run into" each other and let them hold separate group conversations without managing awkward and inorganic breakout rooms!

We're able do so without relying on any centralized media servers by ensuring that users connect to nearby folks based on proximity via WebRTC (peer-to-peer). Consequently, this makes audio, video, chat, etc. more private than most other offerings out there (that have the ability to record/leak calls).

We know that there are plenty of "spatial" video calling apps out there, and since day 1, we've been working hard to remain special:

- We're 3D-based which lets us provide a more IRL/immersive experience than 2D variants - We have built-in realistic, professional, and customizable avatars as I personally hate having my camera turned on in video conferences (as many do by now). - Greater focus on privacy - No meetup duration limits - Fastest onboarding experience: No downloads, VR headsets, or accounts necessary

Right now, Scena 360 is perfect for team socials, networking sessions, meetups and many other events that Zoom simply can't accommodate

We'll also roll out some more realistic and professional scenes in the next couple of days! Since our previous posts on HN, we've also made some major UX enhancements!

Hey HN!

Danilo, Anshuman and Daekun here, co-founders of Scena 360 and Software Engineering students at the University of Waterloo. Scena 360 lets you host more natural and private meetups in shared 3D spaces. In Scena 360, you can turn towards the person that you're talking to and have separate conversations around campfires without having to break into awkwardly-moderated breakout rooms.

Having completed several remote internships and study terms online, we realized how much 2D calls suck, as do most users that we have spoken to. We personally felt anxious keeping our webcams turned on and staring at blank screens, joining "virtual work parties" and "virtual conferences" without being able to casually talk to people. On top of that, we got fed up with malicious video conferencing software.

Imagine that you're in a workshop: Seeing the speaker give a presentation at the front of the room, while you're having a side-discussion with the person next to you about an issue. Turning to the mentor walking by to ask a question. Walking over to another group to strike a chat with them. Talking to a person with their video turned on or a customizable avatar (similar to Bitmoji or Memoji) instead of a blank, muted rectangle. Knowing that your talks are protected with end-to-end encryption. These experiences are made possible with Scena 360.

On top of the above, we plan on expanding the room capacity to handle much more than 10 people/room, potentially hundreds of people per room.

Scena 360 is built using A-Frame, ReactJS & WebRTC. We'd be happy to answer any questions about our tech or product (example: how we keep conversations private).

* We would love to hear your feedback. What do you dislike about 2D video conferencing? *

This is a repost of our "Launch HN" post because we didn't realize that tag was meant for YC companies :(

Thanks! Yup, users can simply click-n-drag across the screen and move around using their arrow/WASD keys, like in a video game.

Users will soon be able to access Scena 360 on their VR headsets by either opening https://app.scena360.com in their VR web browser (e.g. Oculus Browser) and then clicking the "Enter VR-mode" button to enter a fully immersive experience (turn head to look around, wave with virtual hands, etc.). The VR users would be able to interact with the desktop/laptop users (meet in the same room).

djoksimo··on Ask HN: What are your pain points with hosting online meetups?
We intend to offer a more immersive experience (by leveraging 3D/AR/VR/MR technology) in addition to providing lifelike 3D personal avatars to make calls feel less like regular phone calls.

There are definitely other products with similar goals and value propositions, but our intention is to stay unique and not clash with 2D services like gather.town.
