djflutt3rshy··on Ask HN: What are some niche communities you enjoy?
Is there a sense that LCZero will eventually catch up to the top traditional contenders like Stockfish, it is there a possibility of a bottleneck with the machine learning?
djflutt3rshy··on Ask HN: What are some niche communities you enjoy?
Geocaching! Along with the already mentioned Ingress, it’s helped me find so many obscure yet beautiful and interesting locations. The local community is great too, and there is a certain thrill of mischief snooping around for a tiny magnet inside a city trying not to be spotted.
djflutt3rshy··on Ask HN: What are some niche communities you enjoy?
I love Ingress for the discovery factor (there’s many works of public art that simply aren’t indexed anywhere else), unfortunately our local community is a bit toxic so I play solo and use it as an enhanced map more than anything these days. Maybe when 2.0 comes out...

What kind of tools do you generally use? I’m assuming a search engine to identify particular landmarks/stores/etc, and personal knowledge, but what else?
djflutt3rshy··on Show HN: Solving Rush Hour, the 6x6 Sliding Block Puzzle
http://cs.ulb.ac.be/~fservais/rushhour/ has a listing of puzzles that take the most moves, but also mentions how many different configurations are possible.

The guy who made the website literally wrote his master's about it: http://code.ulb.ac.be/dbfiles/Ser2005mastersthesis.pdf

djflutt3rshy··on What to Do When a Loved One Is Severely Depressed
Whenever I have anxious thoughts or worries, I imagine my friend having them instead, and me giving them advice. That advice tends to be a lot less self-critical and more helpful.
djflutt3rshy··on Imgur launches video
Way back when Imgur was first announced, not having ANY ads was a proud selling point for the website, then competing against the much more obnoxious Photobucket/ImageShack.

  Can I advertise on imgur?

Hell no! This is a free site (as in beer) and there will never be any ads on it unless I end up selling out for a million dollars.

djflutt3rshy··on Google News to be revamped, incorporate YouTube videos and magazines
One of the reasons I quit using Google News is the prevalence of "articles" in the Sci/Tech and Health sections giving me all the latest news about how the globe-alists are keeping Planet Nibiru a secret, and why doctors hate this ONE single trick to cure cancer. Unless it's very carefully curated, adding YouTube videos to the mix seems like it'd aggravate this problem.
djflutt3rshy··on Facebook is launching a dating feature
Sure, but would you be willing to pay $25/year? That's about how much Facebook's ARPU (average revenue per user) is in the US right now.
djflutt3rshy··on Ask HN: Examples of great landing pages?
Funny release notes too.
djflutt3rshy··on Notice of Data Breach
Announcing it after markets close and right before a long weekend (markets are closed on Good Friday). Classy.
djflutt3rshy··on Medium suspended our account and blocked access to all our published stories
If more speech was the remedy to hate speech, then we would expect platforms with the most speech and least censorship would have the least hate. But compare well moderated social discussion sites like MetaFilter, HN, Fark to "anything goes" places like Twitter, 4chan, Reddit, etc. and the opposite is true.
djflutt3rshy··on As Cell Service Expands, National Parks Become Digital Battlegrounds
I realize I'm an edge case, but as someone who loves both hiking and location-based games (Ingress! Pokemon Go! Geocaching!) this would be awesome! No more having to download a ton of offline maps on my phone, and all those National/State park portals are no longer inaccessible :)
djflutt3rshy··on How Hate Groups Forced Online Platforms to Reveal Their True Nature
>It is worth noting that the platforms most flamboyantly dedicated to a borrowed idea of free speech and assembly are the same ones that have struggled most intensely with groups of users who seek to organize and disrupt their platforms.

THIS is what ultimately changed my mind about whether Internet companies should offer "free speech" as a positive. I used to believe that the antidote to hateful speech was simply more speech. But every site that's been tried on, fell to more and more hateful speech, pushing and bending and breaking the norms, until sane people left out of disgust or were relegated to their own, more moderated, parts of the site.

Germany and other European countries with anti-Nazi laws have it right (and no, they haven't descended into totalitarian regimes, the slippery slope simply stopped at "Don't be a Nazi".)

djflutt3rshy··on Disney acquires own streaming facilities, will pull Netflix content
Disney probably took that into account, and decided that the demographic buying DisneyOnDemand (or whatever they call this) isn't going to overlap much with the demographic visiting yohoho.warez.se
djflutt3rshy··on Supreme court: Aereo is violating copyright law [pdf]
Yes, it's very strong legally. Congress or the states can try for a Constitutional Amendment (but those are few and far between, last one was in 1992), or the Supreme Court can later reverse itself partially or in full. An example of that would be Plessy v Ferguson in 1896, where the Supreme Court ruled segregation laws were constitutional, but later in the 50's (Brown v. Board of Education) they reversed it.
