djeikyb··on Stupid Programmer Tricks and Star Wars GIFs
Something like this probably works:

    ffmpeg -i myvideo.mkv -vn -acodec ogg myvid_sans_video.ogg
djeikyb··on Dry Ice Bombs at LAX
Seems the word's origins are rooted in a definition of noise. Granted, words change; perhaps a definition based on "exothermic reaction" is most appropriate now. Certainly destructive power is often connoted with the word these days.

djeikyb··on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander)
I do expect a reboot to require somehow reloading my settings via xmodmap. More troubling is during an X session with Unity, my settings would be reverted, and I'd have to reload with xmodmap. Other desktop environments didn't have this issue. I really should have done my part and written a bug report.
djeikyb··on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander)
Last time I was using Ubuntu+Unity as my main desktop (11.xx), I used `xmodmap` to swap my keys, and found that every so often it'd be reverted. Have you experienced similar problems with this technique?
djeikyb··on The Real Reason The Poor Go Without Bank Accounts
All the credit unions in my county (sw usa) charge monthly fees for "low balance" checking accounts unless you meet several stringent requirements, like: >= 30 debit card transactions, >=1 direct deposit, e-statements, etc. These are and'd requirements, not or'd.
djeikyb··on My Daughter’s Homework Is Killing Me
In high school I repeatedly got in trouble for not participating in the pledge. I acquired a copy of this case. My government teacher told me I was reading it wrong, and actually the verdict was the pledge is required. It mostly ended one day in the principal's office when I politely threatened to contact the aclu.
djeikyb··on It's a Dumbphone, But It's the Nicest Dumbphone You Can Buy
Att won't let you use a smart phone without a data plan. Or at least, the reps I've talked to insist it isn't possible.
djeikyb··on A Unix Utility You Should Know About: Netcat (2009)
One thing I like about the original and the gnu netcat is the z option: `nc -z host port; echo $?` for quick testing.
djeikyb··on Why I willingly handed over my credit card and PIN to a fraudster
I'm in the US. Online, I've obtained birth and death dates and lists of mailing addresses of specific persons. In one case, I started with the subject's name and county where they died (the goal was to find the burial plot of a relative). Other cases I started with a name and current city of residence (ie, googling myself and family members). I didn't search social networks. Iirc, most of my success came from online county records.
djeikyb··on YouCompleteMe - A code-completion engine for Vim
I use this with Eclim to enhance java writing. The Vrapper plugin for Eclipse is getting very good, but sometimes it's nice to work directly in vim.
djeikyb··on Let's Play Ancient Greek Geometry
I used the new layer button to accomplish this. It greys out the complications, but the guides from what you've constructed still function.

You're saying Kinkos was acting as a dumb copy service and was sued for copy right infringement. But your linked case explicitly says this is wrong. Rather, they lost because:

Kinko's has periodically asserted that it acted at the instruction of the
educational institution, that is, as the agent of the colleges and is without
responsibility. Yet, Kinko's promotional materials belie this contention
particularly because Kinko's takes responsibility for obtaining copyright
permission while touting the expertise of its copyright permissions staff (a
"service [which] is provided at no charge to all Kinko's customers.").
"Copyright Information Letter to Faculty Members," in Kinko's Copyright and
    Professor Publishing Handbook, at 40.
djeikyb··on ZFS on Linux 0.6.1 released: Ready for wide scale deployment
I'm not part of zfs on linux, I just looked at their github milestones[1]. It looks like they're reserving the 1.0 version for when it's "Fully functional and feature complete native ZFS implementation for Linux." Right now it's just usable and stable. Their previous milestones are also interesting. v0.6.0 had several RCs before being released as stable.[2]

djeikyb··on Reviewing the $250 Samsung Chromebook as a Developer
> Also is this a "real" SSH client like I can X-window forward and share ssh keys

First, I use Google's Secure Shell app [1]. X-fowarding does "work", but (and I'm using the default window manager) the wm doesn't give you access to the window. I just see it briefly. I haven't had problems using ssh keys. Port forwarding options work great.

> Is there a decent VNC client?

If by decent you mean a client not requiring you to hit third party servers, not that I've found.

I'm optimistic about both these problems being fixed, one way or another. If by neither Google nor chrome app, then by installing your own software and switching between x servers.

I tried with a usb stick. Couldn't get to bash prompt, think it might be hanging looking for root on an sd card. Since the instructions say use an sd card, assuming it's my fault. Chrooting seems to work just fine..except the networking seems messed up. Can hit ip addresses, but not domain names. But here again, I'd guess it's some dumb mistake that a little rtfm and troubleshooting should fix.
djeikyb··on The Jobs Are Never Coming Back
The national monthly [1] and state annual average [2] "alternative measures of labor underutilisation" stats are easy to find, but do you know where to get monthly or quarterly data by state, or better, by county?

I might not have bought this machine if I'd known about the wifi problems. I'm in an apartment with eight to ten ssids visible on each channel. My other wifi devices work great, but the chromebook frequently lost connection. As in, lose connection, try-fail, try-fail, try-fail, try-succeed just long enough to load another page, repeat. I've mitigated the problem somewhat by boosting the signal strength (thanks to tomato+linksys-wrt54gl).

Other than that I'm pretty happy with it. I do spend most of my time in the ssh app..

djeikyb··on Critical SSH Backdoor in multiple Barracuda Networks Products
I briefly worked for Barracuda support a few years ago. I don't know how they market or publicly document the boxes, but it seemed common knowledge that we had ssh access. None of the customers I talked to blinked an eye. Most of them outright expected it. So I'm not sure it's so much "backdoor" as "feature".
djeikyb··on Why We’re Building Collections
I've a machine with Windows Vista and accidentally found "\Windows\System32\where.exe". It's pretty dang useful, similar to gnu locate. Doesn't address the larger issues of Vista or file explorers in general, but helps get stuff done.
djeikyb··on Introducing the Command Bar
I use Chromium over Firefox purely so I can open many tabs without having to scroll the tab bar. I use extensions to bind keys, block content, block scripts, etc. I realise these work better (and some only work) in Firefox. But the scrolling tab bar is a deal breaker.
djeikyb··on Debian Now Defaults To Xfce Desktop
I've talked to many an admin writing their backups to dvd. Not the way I'd do it, but..
djeikyb··on Debian Now Defaults To Xfce Desktop
A number of normal people I know use linux. The scenario is usually: 1) Computer "breaks", ie needs os reinstall 2) they don't have os media 3) I offer a choice of buying a full copy of Windows or trying linux for free. Some that choose linux find it isn't for them. Some stick with linux.
djeikyb··on Amazon Quietly Closes Security Hole After Journalist’s Devastating Hack
What I mean is the map of 2 to a,b,c is fading fast. I can't figure out how to dial 1-800-CALL-ATT by looking at my phone, much less my email address.
djeikyb··on Amazon Quietly Closes Security Hole After Journalist’s Devastating Hack
My cell phone (Pantech 5000) has a qwerty keypad. It doesn't have the old rotary phone style letter-number association. I know many people whose phones don't have this.
djeikyb··on Rob Pike: the origin of dotfiles
Yeah, it's pretty lame that if I'm signed into Google but don't want to accept G+'s real name policy, I can't read otherwise public posts.
djeikyb··on Bicycle skills
For this string with cursor at end: "cd /usr/share/gammu"

Bash[1] deletes to the space. Zsh[2] deletes to the slash. I installed Zsh just now to find this out, and I love that Zsh appears to use ctl-w to delete words like vim does.

djeikyb··on Interesting new Unix commands/binaries in OS X Mountain Lion
This is awesome. Do you have it written up in a blog post by chance? I'd love to link it to this answer: http://askubuntu.com/questions/27501/whats-the-difference-be...
djeikyb··on Get A Job: The Craigslist Experiment
I was mostly unemployed for a year or so. Admin assistant posts were attractive because it sounds like a simple office job. Also, 10-13/hr in an office is incredibly better than minimum wage labour. But as you say, over half are scams. For my region, craigslist was worthless.

Fwiw, my solution was to move to an area with lower unemployment (18% to 6%). I have no pro experience and no related education, but I got a dev job with a probation period to ensure I'm actually learning quick enough to be useful.

djeikyb··on We know what you're doing
Interestingly, the string of numbers is a real user id. I presume it defaults to your own profile because facebook.com/profile.php goes to your own profile, and fb simply ignores the malformed parameters.
djeikyb··on FLAC.js, Aurora, and the Future of Web Audio
I'm impressed. The chromium pid settled around 15% on my Eeepc 900 (running Arch Linux, alsa, no pulseaudio)
