djbusby··on Litecli: CLI for SQLite Databases with auto-completion and syntax highlighting
I do all my Python stuff in a container. I've found it easier than the N+ other methods. As a bonus when creating the container one can basically just use the tools the project author likes (pip, ,etc) even legacy things from older scripts.
djbusby··on Ask HN: How do you manage your prompts in ChatGPT?
I have a similar webapp front for the APIs. And it stores the conversation thread like the Chat UI.

And I add some meta data to the prompt: tags, notes, links (just Markdown)

Wouldn't mind getting integrated into my NextCloud.

djbusby··on Htmx, Raku and Pico CSS
I make htmx sites built around view fragments rather than pages. And when I need a page it's just a set of fragments. I make "API" endpoints fir the needed fragments and call via ssr on first paint, then as needed from the htmx side.
djbusby··on Business Moleskine Mania: How a Notebook Conquered the Digital Era
Here I am using the backs of paper from spammy paper mail (post) held together with a binder clip and the random pen I got from my recent visit to a bank.

The price in these things seems a lot to me. But I also spent money on a Remarkable (which is nice too).

djbusby··on Effects of Gen AI on High Skilled Work: Experiments with Software Developers
Well, I don't think I'm lazy. IIRC prices were already moving up and the rent-a-car-apps were exiting. And Uber/Lyft were very far on funding, needing some margin. And then there was this other trigger event of worker pay. Which is a nice corporate spin opportunity. And we've seen that pattern 100s of times (blaming workers for price increase).

Personal horticulture is fun and rewarding! Grow your own lettuce, tomato, etc.

BigAg is HARD WORK

djbusby··on Effects of Gen AI on High Skilled Work: Experiments with Software Developers
Why did the prices for Uber/Lyft rise everywhere else too?

It wasn't Seattle laws that did that.

It's that those companies needed to go from Growth-Mode to Margin-Mode. They could no longer sell VC dollars for dimes.

djbusby··on Serverless-registry: A Docker registry backed by Workers and R2
Not just you. I use a vendored on-prem copy for all kinds of stuff. CPAN, PECL, NPM, bespoke binaries and docker images.

All the upstream vendor deps get caches in this corp-main type repo that we all use internally.

djbusby··on Porting systemd to musl Libc-powered Linux
Oh yeah, I forgot about that tmpfiles feature - that one is useful
djbusby··on Porting systemd to musl Libc-powered Linux
As a user of both, I don't really see anything missing from OpenRC. Maybe parallel startup? Hasn't been a bottleneck for me, ever. I prefer the "syslog" way over journald but that's not anything like a deal breaker. What's features I'm missing?
djbusby··on Porting systemd to musl Libc-powered Linux
Right! If you wanted new Gnome you needed systemd - illusion of choice.
djbusby··on Porting systemd to musl Libc-powered Linux
And don't need systemd for that.
djbusby··on A SpamAssassin Surprise
I've got an account on Google apps, and spams have landed in the main mailbox. Attached PDFs was the common thing. Obviously spoofed sender. One new attempt is sharing (virus) files via Dropbox - been getting a bunch of those invites recently.
djbusby··on CSS @property and the new style
What? Blue LEDs were much cooler! I even modified hardware to swap out green/red for blue (c1997) cause they were so awesome. I have to put a small V-drop cause they were so bright.
djbusby··on ReMarkable Paper Pro
Don't even need the app. I use ssh/scp
djbusby··on Solar will get too cheap to connect to the power grid
I think it's saying the problem space is shifting towards a local storage problem.
djbusby··on I hate Stripe, so I'm going to build my own payment processor
And if you want irreversible, like gold/cash, you can always use Zelle which is supported by most banks in USA
djbusby··on The web's clipboard, and how it stores data of different types
I'm logging in on a laptop and getting notifications on my mobile that contains my laptop hostname.

I don't have any banking app installed on either device.

It's confounding.

djbusby··on The web's clipboard, and how it stores data of different types
Yea, first time I hit their site from this machine. And the alert showed on my mobile phone - "allow aluminium?"

One of these days I'm gonna log in with the debugger active.

djbusby··on The web's clipboard, and how it stores data of different types
Institution for Savings. They use an app/webapp built by a third party that covers loads of small banks.
djbusby··on The web's clipboard, and how it stores data of different types
On the subject of getting "private" data from the browser.

Somehow my Bank webapp was able to 2FA prompt me on sign-in with my hostname (aluminium). How did it get that? And when using their site from mobile it's able to see the text with the 2FA code and auto paste it in! Wow/How? Pixel+Chrome or Linux+Chrome.

djbusby··on Brazil's X ban is sending lots of people to Bluesky
Maybe you're being facetious but, CEOs report to shareholders as a sort of collective boss. Loads of shareholders in Twitter listed here https://www.newsweek.com/full-list-investors-elon-musks-x-re... (needs ad-block) and Elmo is a big shareholder.
djbusby··on Signals for Tailwind CSS (styling based on ancestor state via style queries)
And when the CSS is "inline" via classes vs raw style then you get consistent padding (p-4) vs some things that vary and are hard to update theme-wide (padding: 8px).

It's basically putting a bunch of CSS into "vars" or macros.

djbusby··on Tumblr to move its half a billion blogs to WordPress
No, this thread is larger. That link has three small comments.
djbusby··on Is my vision that bad? No, it's just a bug in Apple's Calculator
Maybe now is a good time to remind everyone: your vision will deteriorate. Keep this in mind when designing.

When I first came to HN it wasn't an issue. Now I have to use my own app for it so the font (and some other things) are workable.

According to my eye doctor the screen time is causing eyesight issues earlier. We're not designed to stare at a bright light 40cm away all day.

May want to look at some eye exercises - or at least something far away.

djbusby··on MongoDB takes a swing at PostgreSQL after claiming wins against rival
Not OP, I'm sure it was Mongo to PG. I've seen it too.

Once someone couldn't scale (c2012) their MySQL. I recommend analyzing and working on the code. A competing consultant said Mongo. So, three years later they called me back to un-fuck that thing (that was only 3/4 done anyway) and then move everything to PG (and a fixed schema and some improved caching).

djbusby··on Google Closure Library has been archived
Visual Studio 6 had all that - c1998
djbusby··on Ever used Google Chrome in incognito mode? You could be entitled to up to $5k
Torrents of copyrighted material.
djbusby··on Is 'No tax on tips' a distraction from the fight to end sub-minimum wages?
I tip at my local coffee (1-2/wk) because they are always nice, cool when I forget my wallet, get my "usual" w/o prompting, stickers for my kid, give me pro-tips on pastry baking, etc

But if I went daily it'd be like $8/coffee.

Espresso machine at home was the right answer. Pays for itself after only 200 coffees.

djbusby··on A $557B Drop in Office Values Eclipses a Revival of Cities
I've been in Oakland, SF, Seattle and now am in some far (1h away) suburb (exurb?). I feel like the quality out here is good, but the stuff to do is smaller scale. Biking is safer and the city (Boston) is a short train (or drive) away. Similar sentiment from a friend in Antioch (CA).

But if I had to commute daily. Hell no.
