djbusby··on XFCE 4.20 aims to bring preliminary Wayland support
Have you tried blue-block type lenses? Not those yellow ones from infomercial - it's a clear lens that cuts some wavelength for staring at bright monitor all day. Lots of cheap readers have those.
djbusby··on Getentropy() vs. RAND_bytes()
> What end state are we actually trying to create here?

Getting sufficiently random bits (perhaps crypto) in a portable and fast way.

djbusby··on Show HN: I made a super-simple image CDN
And should be $100 annual; for the 2 months free to be true.
djbusby··on Show HN: I made a super-simple image CDN
I've see imgur images embedded in pages just today!
djbusby··on Why and how we’re migrating many of our servers from Linux to the BSDs
Why is this grey/down? Is there something factually incorrect?

Edit: it's less grey now.

djbusby··on The latter half of October, the maintainer goes offline
My favorite part of working in banking. Minimum week no contact per year. All these other industries would call me about (trivial) things when I was "off". Regulations forced people to respect (some) time off
djbusby··on OpenAI and Anthropic Revenue Breakdown
Article says:

> they are expected to lose about $5B this year on about $3.7B of revenue

djbusby··on What Your Job Ad Says About You
Or that founders take big risks, strong belief in the mission, maybe don't get paid for a while, etc. it cheapens the title for actual founders.
djbusby··on What Your Job Ad Says About You
Also, stop saying you're "hiring founders" - that's just not how it works.
djbusby··on 300k USD Donation Pledged by Mitchell Hashimoto
Wish I was on the beta, devlog entries look cool. In depth and nerdy.
djbusby··on Mullenweg threatens corporate takeover of WP Engine
Am I stupid or could WPE "simply" had a clone/copy/mirror of the necessary WP.org things? eg: how Linode has for Debian mirrors?
djbusby··on Mullenweg threatens corporate takeover of WP Engine
Or at least misleading the consumer - which is also not cool.
djbusby··on BorgBackup 2.0 supports Rclone – over 70 cloud providers in addition to SSH
It's very sane: encrypt the bits, then send it to the host.

Curious what you think is not right with their methods.

djbusby··on Varlink – IPC to replace D-Bus gradually in systemd
Cool, readable messages in strace but still some odd binary log format?
djbusby··on Web components are okay
Seems like that happens with every frameworks I've ever used since 2000 (in Perl, PHP, Ruby, JS, etc). Every framework makes the easy things slightly easier, the boring stuff is included and you get to focus on the fun/hard part - and I think then, naturally, you bump into the edge. But! You get to that point faster. And then you have to know the guts to solve the issue the "framework" way or do some lower-level shit-hack.

I feel like it's just a natural law of any general purpose framework.

It made the first 80% of the job easy. Now you just have to finish the other 80%.

djbusby··on If WordPress is to survive, Matt Mullenweg must be removed
At least give Heather a few days to respond/engage, given the big-ass-drama that Matt created.
djbusby··on Earth Is on the Brink of Breaching a 7th of Nine 'Planetary Boundaries'
Yep, multiple shits hitting multiple fans.
djbusby··on Qocker is a user-friendly Qt GUI application for managing Docker containers
What's the obnoxious part of their desktop license? It just that one has to pay or what? They even have a carve-out for small business.
djbusby··on Show HN: Finic – Open source platform for building browser automations
I use a few things. First, I scrape from my home IP at very low rates. I drive either FF or Chrome using extension. Sometimes I have to start the session manually (not a robot) and then engage the crawler. Sometimes, site dependant, can run headless or puppeteer. But the extension in "normal" browser that goes slow has been working great for me.

It seems that some sites can determine when using headless or web-driver enabled profile.

Sometimes I'm through a VPN.

The automation is the easy part.

The center of the pixel is at 0.5 but the top left of the pixel at the top left is 0. And the bottom right of the top left pixel is at 1.

Take a look at SimpleFin for exporting bank data in JSON.

> They criticize everything, and very easily

I think that is a feature, not a bug.

djbusby··on Breaking Down OnlyFans' Economics
Selling a kidney is less like labour than two.
djbusby··on I won't be renewing my Pinboard subscription
Homebuilt tool. Started when the Pocket BS in FF happened, just kept playing with it. It's a PWA/Share Target on mobile and an extension in my browser.

Downside is I have to be online to use it.

djbusby··on Breaking Down OnlyFans' Economics
> If you sell your body

That's how all labor works.

djbusby··on I wish (Linux) WireGuard had a simple way to restrict peer public IPs
Doesn't the peer have a VPN-IP that you know?

Eg: my SQL server has one WG and I've got N clients. They are each connecting with their key and assigned IP. So firewall rules will do it.
