djahng··on Paul Graham spills: Why some companies get his cash and others don't
Actually I'm sure most people that have PhDs will tell you that finishing a dissertation requires a large amount of determination, bordering on obsessiveness.
djahng··on Paul Graham spills: Why some companies get his cash and others don't
I don't think this is what he meant. After all, PG does have a PhD. I think he's referring to those multiple-masters degrees grad students, or the 10+ year grad student and still no PhD...
djahng··on How a 19-Year-Old Raised $5 Million to Revolutionize Search
I believe Breakup Notifier was blocked due to too many api calls. Facebook hasn't really been commenting on the specifics as to why it was blocked. So why would they block Greplin specifically? Well the point is no one knows if/why/when Facebook would block Greplin, if ever. But they have the option to. And if Facebook decides to block Greplin, who holds all the cards?
djahng··on How a 19-Year-Old Raised $5 Million to Revolutionize Search
It happened to Facebook Breakup Notifier recently. Facebook revoked API access without notification.
djahng··on Beautiful Time-Lapse of Milky Way over Lake Tahoe
No arguments from me, or Mark Twain.
djahng··on Burning Chrome
I think what Chrome really needs is the ability to watch HTML5 video in full screen (not just fill the browser window). At least this is Chrome's functionality on my Mac. I realize full screen video is not part of the HTML5 spec, it's left to the browser to implement. Safari will do full screen HTML5 video...
djahng··on Ask HN: Who works from home?
At my last job we were allowed to spend the occasional day at home, but we were generally expected to be in the office. I have a few friends that work exclusively remotely, but they didn't begin that way. They worked for a few years at a company, and for one reason or another moved to a new city. Their employers decided to keep them, so they let them work remotely.

Inc magazine had an article a while ago about working remotely (http://www.inc.com/magazine/20100401/the-case-and-the-plan-f...). Thought it was interesting. I'm curious as to whether or not more people are starting new jobs exclusively as a remote employee.

djahng··on YouTube Says It's in Negotiations to Stream Live NBA, NHL Games
Same here. Although I do find myself going to bars a lot more now.
djahng··on Show HN: My 4-hour project, already profitable
Yeah I saw that. I also asked this question before endlessvoid94 did.
djahng··on Show HN: My 4-hour project, already profitable
Where are the shirts being made? Are they made to order and drop-shipped like Cafe Press/Zazzle? Or are you building up inventory?
djahng··on Facebook is not worth $33 billion
price is what you pay. value is what you get.
djahng··on WakeMate Update
PhD from HST in itself is just a credential and doesn't mean much beyond that. I'm sure you've seen the commercials for "doctor recommended back-pain relief products" that are being endorsed by dentists...
djahng··on WakeMate Update
I'm curious as to why their "About us" page is empty. Beyond their manufacturing complications, I'm wondering what qualifies them to make statements and a device that claims to help people sleep/wake up better. It leaves the door open to everything from "read some academic papers written by grad students" to "medical doctor with years of sleep research". I'm sure a quick google search would bring up more info about the founders, but it seems more appropriate to be able to find it from the company itself.

That aside, this product does seem promising. I typically sleep only 5-6 hours per night and wake up naturally (without an alarm clock). I feel fine most of the time, but I do notice on those occasional days that I sleep 8+ hours, I feel much better. Being able to analyze my sleep with a $50 device at home is something that does interest me.

djahng··on The Most Detailed Image of Our Galaxy Ever Taken
these images were taken using the spitzer space telescope, which is an infrared telescope. so no, those aren't "true colors".

djahng··on The Most Detailed Image of Our Galaxy Ever Taken
i think the images were taken from spitzer. so yes, it is as seen from earth.

djahng··on Astronomers find 9 new planets and upset the theory of planetary formation
Observing the red/blue (doppler) shift is in fact how retrograde orbits relative to a star's rotation is determined. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rossiter–McLaughlin_effect

You can't actually visibly see the planet travel across the star, however. What you measure is the periodic dip in the number of photons collected by the CCD.

djahng··on Verizon Droid Quick Review Plus Comparison with iPhone
I'm not sure what he's complaining about with the Droid camera. It looks like it's just using a different white-balance setting than the iPhone.
djahng··on Hacking Two-Factor Authentication
So the lesson is don't worry so much about authenticating the user, but focus on authenticating the transaction. It would have been a much more useful article if he actually described how (rather than just saying, "do it like the credit card companies").
djahng··on Starting a Bank
"'Bank of America spent $40,000,000 dollars on airplanes last year. We spent $40,000 to develop an iPhone application so you can check your balance from anywhere.' (Hmm, the iPhone app should cost like $2.99.)"

I think he's misunderstanding something...the iPhone app may cost $2.99, but it doesn't cost $2.99 to develop.

djahng··on Ask HN: Had an original idea for a start-up...but
You mean Paul Graham?
djahng··on Ask HN: Had an original idea for a start-up...but
I'd just search around for tutorials and stuff on what you're looking at (PHP, JavaScript, etc). You really only need a basic understanding to get started. And that's what you really need to do...just get started. Ultimately you don't become an expert by reading books, you become an expert by doing. You'd be amazed at how much you learn by figuring out why something's not working the way thought it should.

There's a section on imports.

djahng··on Typing The Letters A-E-S Into Your Code? You’re Doing It Wrong
So, in the context of the SSO cookie, could tampering with the encrypted data be prevented by signing the ciphertext (please excuse the terminology if it's not correct)? What I mean by that is, encrypt the cookie's plaintext (e.g. "user=username, role=admin, etc."), and then sign it, so the value stored in cookie is something like <ciphertext>:<signature>?

Haha reminds me of the quote from Richard Nixon's Head in Futurama: Listen here Missy, computers may be twice as fast as they were in 1973...
