djKianoosh··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
there was a recent PBS tv series with Sam Claflin as Edmond Dantès and Jeremy Irons as the Abbé Faria but I don't recall a French movie. thanks for the tip!

the benefit is great for managers who go between different meetings, and especially if those meetings are at different locations.

much less time wasted in between meetings.

they definitely also get more done

djKianoosh··on Telemetry required? Ask users first
the example I like to always use is when EA kept abandoning Madden (especially online franchise mode and gameplay) for like 10+ years straight (while making money hand over fist on MUT).

One time there was this new mode, for like 1-2 years, of 3v3 online. it was probably the most fun mode madden has ever had. it just needed a few tweaks. sensible stuff. But it would've been amazing!

but no. because it was difficult to get to in the menu system, fewer people used it and few people knew about it. so of course telemetry is going to say few people used it. but it had a TON of potential! a product owner made the wrong decision to cut that feature, and guaranteed they used misleading telemetry to justify it.

the docs/paper for roaring bitmap says it's to be used for large datasets, but I must have missed where "large" is defined. In practice, how large does a set have to be to take advantage of roaring bitmaps?

djKianoosh··on Ask HN: My boss doesn't think I'm doing good work, how to proceed?
DONT keep your head down though. That's part of the problem. Get out of your bubble/headspace/etc and talk to other devs. Compare approaches. Reach out to others to see how they're solving problems. Even problems you're not having. Especially those actually, for when the time inevitably comes when you have to deal with those issues.

As a new person you can't possibly know everything. If you dont have someone showing you the ropes then you have to take initiative and talk to others.

Especially in larger orgs, this is invaluable.

djKianoosh··on My Evaluation of SvelteKit for Full-Stack Web App Development
How does Routify compare with svelte-spa-router[1]? I really like svelte-spa-router for a simple SPA, though I think a lot of SPA routers don't always handle state well.

I'm kinda serious, why not use a crypto invoicing service? Seems like an actual use case to not have to rely on traditional banking.
djKianoosh··on The Handwavy Technobabble Nothingburger of Crypto
How much of the world have you described?

Bitcoin is better in those unstable currency countries. The market will decide (has decided in some cases). So maybe inexorably bitcoin will be the reserve currency for a large portion of the planet. And at some point there will be a tipping point where it's going to be attractive enough to all other central banks.

It turns an everyday person worldwide into equals with central banks. That's pretty radical.

djKianoosh··on Why doesn’t natural immunity count in the US?
But doesn't a population's overall poor health contribute to the potential gridlock of the healthcare system? I mean, what is the percentage of non-accident emergencies in the system and has it increased with the overall decline in society's fitness? (assuming it has declined I suppose, I don't have any numbers as I am not in that field)

djKianoosh··on Show HN: Plausible – Self-Hosted Google Analytics alternative
Isn't the whole premise "Self-Hosted"? There are lots of organizations that still don't use online services and prefer things to be in house and in their own data center.
djKianoosh··on How to Hide a Billion Dollars: Three Techniques the Ultrarich Use to Dodge Ex-Sp
Then maybe not open it up at that fine grain a level. And that's too specific an example anyway, as the budgeting process is way more complex: https://www.usa.gov/budget

So really, the citizens' choice in my example would have be to designate percentages at the top level, say to DoJ, DoD, DHS, etc.

That in and of itself would put a lot of power back in the citizens' hands. Of course, I don't see this happening, but that would be transformative. And we'd see a lot of campaigning/advertising/propaganda from each Department asking for taxpayers to direct their funds to them...

But my original premise was that Congress is gridlocked and if you think they're not serving the citizens' best interests, then this is an alternative from left field.

djKianoosh··on How to Hide a Billion Dollars: Three Techniques the Ultrarich Use to Dodge Ex-Sp
The majority of these dollars in the US go to military bathwater. Perhaps there may be a way for citizens to earmark their preferences directly for where they feel their tax dollars should go. Yeah yeah go vote of course. But Congress acts too slow. I am talking about a more direct system, maybe with limits sure. But as it is, Congress has a lot of the purse strings, and maybe individual citizens could have more say-so with an improved system.

I've been working in the federal gov over 20 years. You can't paint a broad brush and say it's all a Microsoft shop. It really isn't. All my clients have been on Linux/unix or going to it (yes, leaving Microsoft).

There's a sizable market for non and anti Microsoft products.

djKianoosh··on Editorial board of Index and more than 70 staff members resign
I'm not from EU. Does the EU encourage or enforce any kind of education system/standards? Along with the things you mentioned, I would think that, long term, a healthy educational baseline would be critical for a functional government. And independent journalism is, by extension, critical for that, too.
