diyorgasms··on College Students Prefer Reading Print Books to E-Readers
Not exactly an e-reader, but I read my textbooks on a Nexus 7 most of the time. I use Moon+ Reader, and the search and bookmarking features are phenomenal.

When I am on a desktop or notebook computer, I use either Evince or Preview, depending on the platform I am using. I would say Moon+ provides an experience equal to that of Evince, and definitely better than Preview, at least for the purposes of being an ebook reader.

I think the difference is that the Post and most right-wing media in the USA support not the libertarian notion of conservatism, but a more authoritarian version.

Have we really been having that discussion? Maybe I just haven't been paying close enough attention, but I was unaware that we were anally raping prisoners under the pretense of "feeding" and "hydrating." In fact the media dog and pony show about the hunger strikes specifically said nasal intubation for feeding, which was presented as being unpleasant but an humane manner of keeping the prisoners alive.

Couple that with the revelations that we have tortured at least one prisoner to death, and I think there is plenty of cause for the dialog about torture to continue.

That was amazing to watch. Thank you for sharing. It was really something to see Senator Pastore, who began the session as an adversary to Mr. Rogers, come around slowly to Mr. Rogers' way of thinking in just under seven short minutes.
diyorgasms··on Half a decade with Go
Do people prefer not using Makefiles? I ask because Makefiles are a standard part of my workflow, and while I know I can 'go build' or 'go [whatever]' I still cling to my Makefiles as a preferred tool.
diyorgasms··on Global Web Crackdown Arrests 17, Seizes Hundreds Of Dark Net Domains
I am curious how a .onion domain seizure works. Does this mean the various law enforcement agencies are in possession of the private keys of the services they shut down?
diyorgasms··on ARM multiprocessor support
I am disappointed not to see any of the Beagle* boards on the list of supported devices, as it is another ARMv7 device with completely open hardware. Still, this is a pretty cool consolidation effort.

I agree that using free (libre) tools is preferable, but a lot of this facilitates that. For instance, you can deploy a GNU/Linux image using the DigitalOcean credit and gain experience deploying on a LAMP/LEMP stack and doing things like creating iptables rules and things like that, which is good real-world experience that is in no way temporary or platform dependent.

Git itself (as I'm sure you know) is a free tool, and learning git is a worthwhile skill no matter where you are using it. Hell, I know people who use git for collaborative document management.

And the SSL stuff and domains offered through namecheap are going to be helpful to anyone who wants to go into web development. Knowing how to set up a domain, with proper DNS records and SSL configurations, is a pretty basic task for people who do web stuff. And, again, these things are platform agnostic. I think there is a lot of value offered here, and not all of it serves the purpose of furthering vendor lock-in.

Simply because one supports those goals does not mean that one must self-identify as a feminist. I happen to support those goals and I also happen to identify as a feminist.

I can imaging many people who have not studied feminist theory and yet still believe in the principles you listed. Can we legitimately ask that they self-identify as something of which they have little or no functional understanding?

diyorgasms··on Everything you need to know about the Shellshock Bash bug
You can tail your access.log and grep the expression "\(?\s_\s\)?\s{|cgi" to get an idea if someone is trying to exploit your webserver. The cgi part will return a lot of false positives, but if you cannot disable cgi, you might as well track it being requested.

I see no problem with what's been happening on 4chan. Sharing the plundered private photos and videos of celebrities is a sickening invasion of privacy, and invites a whole host of legal trouble for moot. Whatever these anons think, Christopher Poole cannot stand behind a veil of anonymity; he can and will be held accountable for illegal activity on his site. Especially since it has spawned things that grab the attention of authorities, like Anonymous, Lulzsec, and "the fappening."

As for #GamerGate, I think the whole thing was blown out of proportion, but with anons (and redditors) doxxing anyone they thought was involved, I can see why moot might want to nip that in the bud before any serious harm came from 4chan (which is, again, his site to run as he sees fit).

If anons just want a place free of moderation to share CP, pilfered nudes, and dox, then maybe there will be an exodus. All I can hope is that if they leave, maybe there will be some technology on /g/ again.

diyorgasms··on Ask HN: Palantir or Facebook?
I think very few people would blame you for taking the mercenary approach here. However, you may wish to consider who it is you will be working for.

Palantir is deeply entrenched in the surveillance state. Though they may come at you with a decent offer, I believe it is ethically impermissible to use my skills in order to contribute to the deprivation of the human rights of others across the world.

I do not have much positive to say about Facebook either, except that the bulk of their revenue does not come from three letter agencies. And they have in the past and will probably continue in the future to solve some interesting challenges in scalability.
