diyorgasms··on How do police handle violence in countries where officers don’t carry guns?
This is simply not true and the only place reporting this is a far-right blog. You are not entitled to your own facts.

Edit - Here's a Snopes link describing the particulars of the falsehood: http://www.snopes.com/philando-castile-was-not-wanted-for-ar...

diyorgasms··on Amazon's Chinese Counterfeit Problem Is Getting Worse
I bought mine 18 months ago and I am extremely satisfied with the quality (both build and sound) for what I paid. They absolutely live up to the reputation PortaPros have.
diyorgasms··on Running I3 Window Manager on Ubuntu for Windows
>Windows is a vector not because of security problems but because of its usage ratio.

I think the publication regarding vulnerabilities in the kernel's handling of font rendering would make you think twice about this assertion. Windows certainly has its share of design flaws.

>That loser on Arch should talk when Linux and macOS are completely impenetrable.

Maybe try again next time without the personal attack. Also, I don't think that because the alternatives are imperfect Windows should be immune from criticism. Microsoft might have come a long way, but running Windows these days is still a security liability in ways that running Linux or macOS aren't. Windows is just a big juicy target and attackers go for the big fish.

diyorgasms··on Globalization’s losers are revolting
I think you'd be surprised to find that the answer for many is yes. I for one cannot in good conscience support any politician whose economics are neoliberal and whose social policies are oppressive. I think Trump's xenophobia and Hillary's authoritarian social policies (which also disproportionally negatively affect disadvantaged minority groups) are absolutely immoral and moral people should not support these candidates.

I realize that I occupy a position outside of the political mainstream in America, but I suspect that is changing. I expect to see many more people rejecting neoliberal economics as a game rigged against workers by the bourgeoisie.

diyorgasms··on The life of American workers in 1915
Yeah it's a shame that our government still doesn't acknowledge its role in killings of labor organizers and union members.

diyorgasms··on Trump
I have to wonder if these are Chinese immigrants who are loyal to the government in China and as such find Trump's strong authoritarian streak reminiscent of home.
diyorgasms··on Trump
If anything, I'd call that a charitable description, and definitely not as strongly worded as most would write.
diyorgasms··on The Fathers of the Internet Urge Today’s Software Engineers to Reinvent the Web
Just FYI that's basically opposite how the phrase "doesn't bother" is idiomatically used in at least American English.
diyorgasms··on Show HN: Bot to steer discussions from Slack to Discourse
Absolutely they should. But I don't think a rational self-interested company would continue to allow those APIs to be used in order to facilitate a competitor siphoning off users.
diyorgasms··on Police use new device to seize money in bank accounts or on prepaid cards
I agree that these are all significant challenges. However I believe that in the absence of a licensing body, we as professionals can still reach consensus-based conclusions on minimum standards of professional ethics.

And I suspect very strongly that the engineers on this particular project would have clearly violated any standards of professional ethics we could agree on.

diyorgasms··on Police use new device to seize money in bank accounts or on prepaid cards
I've seen it said before and I'll say it again. Anyone who works for companies who make products like this in any capacity should be blacklisted in the industry. The missing scruples here could fill several large containers.
diyorgasms··on Eric Holder says Edward Snowden performed a 'public service'
>Poitras is enemy of U.S. military

Poitras is pretty clearly not a fan of the US military, but I don't think she's been declared an "enemy combatant". Calling her an "enemy" of the military is disingenuous. The US military does plenty of horrific and inexcusable things, and criticizing those who commit clear war crimes does not make someone an "enemy".

diyorgasms··on Visiting Chelsea Manning in prison
Funny enough, the phrase "virtue signaling" itself acts as "virtue signaling", as at this point it is used almost exclusively by members of online communities who are opposed to political correctness and are often outwardly intolerant of transpeople. I don't mean to imply anything about the GP, just to observe a particular irony around that phrase.
diyorgasms··on LinkedIn called me a white supremacist because I happen to share a name with one
Libel laws in the UK are notoriously very favorable to the plaintiff. At least in the US, the test is more along the lines of "knowingly false".
diyorgasms··on 78% of Reddit Threads with 1,000+ Comments Mention Nazis
Well, from my experience hanging around in leftist subreddits, I can say there's an awful lot of loud and repeated objection to the Reddit admins harboring neo-nazi fora such as the aforementioned /r/european. Whether the admins allowing that speech is virtuous or villainous is a different debate, but the leftist subs routinely criticize Reddit the company for harboring actual Nazis.
diyorgasms··on 78% of Reddit Threads with 1,000+ Comments Mention Nazis
It's interesting that the highest non-history subreddit is /r/european, which is a neo-nazi forum. Cool dataset at least.
diyorgasms··on A majority of millennials now reject capitalism
While that may be true, I would speculate that due to higher spending on social programs, the European poor enjoy I higher quality of life than their American counterparts. Don't discount things like tax-funded transportation, healthcare, and education, and the luxury of not maintaining a massive standing military.
diyorgasms··on After Netflix crackdown on border-hopping, Canadians ready to return to piracy
Wow thanks for the reply. It seems like things are really improving. Here in the USA, we seem to be moving almost backward, with the telecom companies just now implementing caps on previously uncapped connections, and fighting against the deployment of next generation infrastructure.
diyorgasms··on The Sad History of the Microsoft Posix Subsystem (2010)
Except this is an article about Interix. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Microsoft seems to have discarded this particular technology entirely and started over fresh with Ubuntu on Windows.
diyorgasms··on Ubuntu on Windows
I've got monitors daisy chained using displayport on Debian, in mixed portrait and landscape modes. This is using an NVIDIA card and GNOME. It was plug-and-play.
diyorgasms··on Scrutiny of 'Truthy', a university project that studies trends on Twitter (2014)
Yeah I was reading a few articles about this and one mentioned that the FBI was involved. Turns out it rant this article, and turns out not to have been a reputable source. However it's too late for me to edit the title, and I can't find a way to delete the post. Please feel free to flag our downvote.
diyorgasms··on Scrutiny of 'Truthy', a university project that studies trends on Twitter (2014)
I apologize, I read the FBI part in another article and I can't seem to corroborate the claim that the FBI is involved. As such I am editing the title. Apologies for the sensationalism.

Edit: it would seem I can no longer edit the title.

diyorgasms··on A Government Error Just Revealed Snowden Was the Target in the Lavabit Case
Right but that logic could be used to prevent mass adoption of better crypto. Brand new crypto is not in "common use". We could, for instance, see the state ban the use of quantum-resistant algorithms by private citizens if citizens are only allowed to use the crypto that is in common use.
diyorgasms··on NSA data will soon routinely be used for domestic policing
While I agree that the US is becoming a "turn-key totalitarian state" it is patently absurd to compare Sanders' brand of social democracy (an ideology incredibly far from Socialism) with Trump's fascism.

Social democracy coexists with Western values in basically the entirety of Europe. It has not led to the collapse of the continent into some totalitarian nightmare.

The fascism being advocated by Trump and members of the alt-right however draws a lot of comparisons to the rise of the Nazi party in Germany, and not because the right is unpopular with academics or journalists but because Trump and his supporters are using violent and xenophobic/racist language while they scapegoat ethnic and religious out-groups.

diyorgasms··on One Day After Indictment, Former Chesapeake Energy CEO Dies in Car Crash
I really think this post is unnecessarily combative as a response to a very innocuous remark.
diyorgasms··on US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loans
From the guidelines:

>Please avoid introducing classic flamewar topics unless you have something genuinely new to say about them.

This is a pretty classic example of a flamewar topic, and doesn't add anything of substance to the conversation besides uncharitable bait.

diyorgasms··on US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loans
Because the alternative is to offer the poor no opportunity to improve their financial situation through education. Permanent hopeless underclasses do not make for a stable society.
diyorgasms··on How Julian Assange Is Destroying WikiLeaks
It is wildly irresponsible to wield accusations like that without offering some sort of support for that position.

I would say that it is in the US government's interest to discredit wikileaks, as their leaks tend to air dirty American laundry. But a lack of similarly embarrassing leaks about Russia dies not Russian propaganda make. It could simply be that Russian whistleblowers are more likely to meet with a fatal exposure to polonium.

diyorgasms··on What happens to a tiny town when Walmart disappears
Good call thanks.

I've hit my article quota from WaPo for the month, and as such was unable to view this in my browser. For anyone else having this problem, wgetting the URL worked for me.

I'm sure there are more convenient ways of bypassing the paywall, too.
