divan··on Meta VR Glasses
It's more like 27" screen. Most people (including me) don't see one of the edges clearly (it gets too far into periphery). Like 5% of the right and bottom edge can be hard to see without moving. With 3DoF you would be able to just move your head, but without there 2 options: - somehow push glasses closer to the eyes (some reported that they replaced nose pads for that) - just accept it (my case - I just make terminal screen slightly smaller in height from the full height, and it's fine)

Again, the screen is fantastic. Even overkill for text-related stuff (reading, coding, terminal, etc). It's FullHD HDR 10-bit OLED. I do edit videos Davinci with these glasses. They target it for gaming and movies.

divan··on Meta VR Glasses
Yeah, seems like RayNeo GT Max have proper 3DoF tracking. Shoot, now I need these :)
divan··on Meta VR Glasses
I work with Rayneo Air 4 Pro - they have HDR/120fps displays (image quality is top-notch and they're bright enought to work even with direct sunlight). They don't have battery or software, it's plug-in-play USB-C external screen essentially. It's more than enough for travel, or for sitting straight while working cafe, for privacy reasons or working outdoors. I even tried them while walking in the forest (with laptop in the backpack and using voice input).

Drawback - they don't do 3DoF tracking, so the screen just follows where you're looking, you can't change screen size, and no multimonitor setup. They have IMU sensors, though. It's possible to create your own virutal monitor software (or use someone's else like RealWarp), but IMU drift is hard to beat and experience is far from perfect. So I stick with 'just one high-quality screen' for now, and to be honest it was some quality-of-life improvement for me.

PS. Couple of weeks ago there was new release from RayNeo, which supposedly have 3DoF and same quality. Haven't tried those.

divan··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
I installed iOS 27 yesterday and first thing went to try new Siri. My settings for Siri responses was set to 'Auto' and it wasn't responding with a voice. So the first chat with a new Siri went like this (tried first example):

Me: - Hey, what's the sunrise time tomorrow?
Siri: - (showing me popup with sunrise info)
Me: - Can you respond with a voice?
   Siri: - To whom?
   Me: - To me..
Siri: - Here are the contacts I found in your contact list.
Me: - No, I mean can you give me the answer using voice?
Siri: - Here are some results I found on the web...
divan··on The Nature of Dance
My 2 cents on this question – it's easier to learn the follower part: you get some basics and then go to social dances events and practice with a good leaders. But to learn the leader part you can't just go to dance events and practice with good followers. It takes more deliberate practice in classes to get the leading part.

You can also put it in ~/.claude/settings.json:

   "permissions": {
    "defaultMode": "bypassPermissions"
   },
divan··on Auto mode is now the default in Claude Code
Yup. I just made this mode default via settings.

divan··on FFmpeg 9.1's new AAC encoder
Sure, you could've heard about it outside of that space. Yet, most likely, you have not.

It just feels wrong when HN commenters downvote comments that try to clear up legitimate confusion.

divan··on FFmpeg 9.1's new AAC encoder
why is this downvoted? for people who aren't in audio codec dev space, parent comment reads exactly as 'Opus 4.8 rewrote the codec and blew out all competitors'
divan··on Bring back crappy forums
Yes, Discourse and Flarum have been a breath of fresh air. Something was unsettling with Discourse to me though - it had an opinionated UI, and some design choices that made it feel different from traditional (-BB type) forums. It seems to be a great fit for technical communities, but not for others (taking my own words with a grain of salt here).
divan··on Bring back crappy forums
The word 'crappy' stood out to me. I feel the same sentiment about bringing back forums, but as a person who maintained few of those for many years, I always wanted explicitly non-crappy forums.

In fact, I attribute much of the decline of forums to the fact that they were crappy and hard to maintain. Those PHP/Ruby monstrousities, with plugin system that was a security and maintaiability nightmare, made maintaining a forum quite a challenging task. I have some forums died purely because it was impossible to update them anymore without blowing up half of the functionality.

Bring back non-crappy forums!

> if we wanted a good UI/UX framework we'd have to start from typesetting

I think UI framework begins with a model of how composition, layout, rendering, input/focus and state works. Typesetting subsystem should be built on top of that.

And that's exactly the problem with this kind of post-rationalization of HTML legacy - it's a wonderful mechanism for what it was created for, but decades of attempts to add and repurpose all those missing foundational blocks for app development leads to the twenty layers of hacks on top of hacks.

divan··on A native graphical shell for SSH
Electron is not a novel approach or "technology" of achieving cross-platform UI. It's literally a Chromium browser plus a Node.js runtime, using web-stack to impersonate desktop application. None of these tools have been designed to solve UI pain points.

Closest thing to what you're describing is Flutter, which is a UI framework designed from ground up for modern UI app needs, without delegating much to OS level.

divan··on A native graphical shell for SSH
> Native UI frameworks don't bother fixing the real hard problems

I'm genuinely curious what do you mean by that.

My beef with web stack was exactly this - typesetting engine from 80s has been never designed for modern UI/UX needs, and it cannot adequately provide those. Whenever I interact with web apps, I experience so many glitches, weird interaction issues (especially if there is a zoom/selection/scrool involved), that I don't even pay attention to them anymore - it's a norm. It's a norm on web to 'just refresh page' (which is equivalent to 'restart native app') - we do it all the time, because absolute majority of web apps is just crap that requires extremely advanced team of web developers to make it a 'baseline' native-like experience level of quality.

divan··on A native graphical shell for SSH
> still dont understand Electron is vastly superior technology

in what sense crossplatoform desktop-wrapper around typesetting engine is a 'vastly superior technology' to native UI frameworks?

divan··on Deno Desktop
This. It's nuts how the whole industry accepts that typesetting engine from 80s with bunch of hacks on top is currently dominating cross-platform UI development.
divan··on CSSQuake
As someone who passionately and ardiently hates prolifiration of this set of _hacks on top of hacks_ called CSS (and CSS/JS/HTML aka Web-stack), I must say this is good and valid use case for CSS. :)
divan··on I Could've Rickrolled the FIFA World Cup. All I Needed Was My ID
To be fair FIFA is one of the best international federations in terms of good governance. Dutch sport think-tank Play The Game has an assestment methodology and the project called "Sports Governance Observer" and did asses FIFA in 2018 [1]

FIFA gets disproportionate amount of attention and, ofc, high-level corruption scandals, but I would say it's more like a by-product of the sheer scale of the football, and not a problem with FIFA itself. I believe most sports federations in the world are very far from FIFA in terms of governance, but also from facing problems that FIFA has.

divan··on Show HN: ShadowCat – file transfer through QR Codes in a Browser
This method of animated QR data transfer is quite efficient with fountain codes. I had PoC implementation back in the day - Txqr [1] [2]

[1] https://divan.dev/posts/animatedqr/

[2] https://divan.dev/posts/fountaincodes/

Recently I rewrote it in Dart/Flutter and finally implemented RaptorQ codes (way more efficient than Luby used in original Txqr). Testing it internally now, prepareing Appstores/GooglePlay/Web deployment and new article.

Does anyone know if it's already possible to build gaussian splat of the person that moves/rotates from the single camera? (I.e. to use sequence of frames to reconstruct occluded parts of the body for other frames)

It also hasn't worked before.

Except of hope that it will decrease sales (which is still not solving privacy issue), can you see other possible negative effects of the ostracization based on the gadgets they use?

How does not talking to people will solve privacy problems of the new technology? Are you assuming that Meta will see that you ignored your coworker with smart glasses and shut down the project, along with Apple and other smart-glasses manufacturers? I'd love to follow your logic, if you can't follow mine.
divan··on DaVinci Resolve – Photo
Yeah, it's questionable that Davinci layout will yield a good photo experience, but it's interesting development anyway. BTW, that's the reason I like Photomator - it has absolute minimum of what I typically would use, and it's all there. Like, there is a hotkey for autoaligning horizont (and quite often it actually work), or intuitive AI-powered 'Select subject'/'Select background', and even an easy way to back those typical change into edit that can be applied with a hotkey onto a bunch of photos. It's easy to spot when software was written based on pain points of real end users.
divan··on DaVinci Resolve – Photo
You're not the first :)

If you know how to do masking with video in Davinci, then it all just applies to photos too. I tried today some basic Magic Mask and color tab editing with photos, and it works exactly the same (without the annoying waiting time on huge videos for Magic Mask, ofc).
