div··on What language should I learn?
If you search at country level, most are Java bastions. UK and France excepted.
div··on WWDC 2013 – June 10-14
The shape resembles current app icons. Might refer to a flat iOS 7 design.
div··on Ask HN: How do you name your servers?
I use names from Alice in Wonderland.

whitequeen is my macbook, while my gaming rig is bandersnatch. The wifi id is throughthelookingglass, while the Timecapsule is called thecheshirecat, my iPhone is the dormouse.

I've some unnamed devices laying around that I've been meaning to get to :)

div··on Xamarin Test Cloud
Oh nice, looks like it will be able to run Calabash features. I was _just_ playing around with those today, how serendipitous.
div··on Oh, I’m not a… — Medium
Not weird at all. For starters, this gives you the tools to think about what could be wrong, when stuff goes wrong. Or at least a vague idea of where to start looking.

The more of these 'entry points' you get the easier it gets for others, whose specialty you know a bit of, to communicate with you.

Bonus points if you have a 'relative difficulty' idea for most of those entry points.

div··on Association between muscular strength and mortality in men (2008) [pdf]
A good source of information for this is fitness.reddit.com

Be sure to read the FAQ there. The TL;DR version is to pick up one of the two programs mentioned above (5x5 or starting strength).

div··on India Supreme Court rejects Novartis' right to patent new version of cancer drug
I'm not a patent lawyer, but I fail to see why this would be the case.

If the old version was held by someone else, would it then also be open for the public ?

As far as I can tell, patents pretty much stand on their own.

div··on David Heinemeier Hansson: Every Employee Should Work From Home
Working from a Coworking space instead of from your company's office for me is still "working from home".

The essential part is basically that you work from wherever you find yourself most productive. Personally, as long as I can avoid commutes of over an hour, I'm happy enough.

Working from my actual home has some extra benefits (like going out with my dogs whenever I take a short break etc.), but I definitely appreciate working from another place every now and then.

div··on Want to Help People? Just Give Them Money
The article mentions people living on less than 65 cents a day.

When given money, the stats seem to indicate that these people invest that money in both short term (food !) commodities and long term (land, livestock, housing) assets.

Basically, giving money directly is allowing these people to go out and buy some fish for right now, and a fishing pole for tomorrow.

An added benefit is that this is a very lean way to organize aid, since there is no need for dozens of committees and meetings and other organisational overhead to determine the most efficient way to spend. You just let the receivers decide for themselves.

Sure there will be some abuse and some people that go even further off the rails due to drug abuse or bad investments, but most of these people are just as capable as you and me to plan their live, they just need that little boost to get back ON the rails in the first place.

A somewhat similar model is used by Kiva, except that they give the money as a loan, and it's expected to be paid back. Maybe that approach is a bit more in line with your opinion.

div··on Must-have OS X apps for developers and designers
Chiming in to plug SizeUp for this, wouldn't be able to live without it:

div··on How to Convince People to Join Your Start-up
Maybe people are gauging how much influence they'd have on the end product and it's not as important what you reply, as long as you demonstrate a willingness to listen to feedback, and extract the useful bits.
div··on Code Reads
That says nothing about wether Sam ever got paid $1000 per hour or not.

Judging by a post on his blog* I doubt that his was very lucrative for him.

div··on How to Escape from {{ #PROGRAMMING_LANGUAGE }}
Read the source code of stuff you are already using. Dig into that networking library, or explore that templating plugin.

This not only lets you read more code, but also lets you pick up knowledge in areas that are often taken for granted (no need to think about X, there's a library / plugin /framework for that).

div··on How to calculate your hourly rate
This is a great point that people rarely make in these discussions.

If you want to do value based pricing, you need to have a sales pitch that differentiates you from the market, or risk pricing yourself out of said market.

Making a lot of money per <hour|day|week|...> doesn't come down to just asking for it. You have to market yourself.

div··on More Than Half a Million Raspberry Pis Sold
I ordered mine with an SD card, a clear plastic case, micro-usb and hdmi cables and a usb power adapter.
div··on Survey says Facebook still in use by young, but Snapchat/Instagram are real
Facebook's North-American ARPU for the 2nd quarter was $3.20 (http://seekingalpha.com/article/756141-facebook-why-shares-a...).

My main point was that a 5$ ONE TIME charge is way too low. Typically ARPU is calculated over a certain period of time (monthly, quarterly, yearly).

div··on Survey says Facebook still in use by young, but Snapchat/Instagram are real
A 5$ one-time fee is way too low. Advertisers will probably outspend anything that isn't a proper monthly subscription.
div··on Ray Kurzweil Says He’ll Get ‘Unlimited Resources’ to Work on AI at Google
Depending on how you define AI, anything between nothing and everything.
div··on Creating a Great Place to Work
I worked in an open floor plan office for 8 years. The second best results invariably came from projects in which my 3-4 man team claimed a meeting room and closed the door. The best results came from working from home, where I have a private office.
div··on Germany orders changes to Facebook real name policy
Content sites like Hulu, Netflix, Youtube seem to have no problem restricting access based on ip.

This isn't 100%, but it would effectively block everyone in my family except me.

div··on Wil Wheaton on Instagram's new ad policy
Would you mind elaborating on how his grasp on what they're doing is plain wrong ?

Specifically, how is his example of a celebrity's silly picture being used by Instagram to advertise a silly product plain wrong ?

I also fail to see how he comes across as entitled in his post. He's merely expressing a concern, one that, at face value, seems to be pretty valid.

div··on Backbone.js 0.9.9 Released
I've used both Backbone and AngularJS, and found the AngularJS learning curve to be steeper than the Backbone one, and there's more 'jargon' to grok before you start understanding things.

How steep you find a learning curve is likely to be influenced by your technical history.

That said, the difference in difficulty, in my experience, is certainly not an order of magnitude.

div··on Surprises When Designing An iPhone App
It does. Starting from iOS 6, UILabels can display attributed strings out of the box. If you need to support iOS < 6, the best approach is to use TTTAttributedLabel or NIAttributedLabel.
div··on NVD3 Erased From Existence
I don't really see how your comment is relevant. The important turn of events here is how a piece of opensource software can apparently be retroactively removed from the internet.

It doesn't matter if that piece of software was the best or the worst implementation in its field.

div··on Google TV: Now faster and easier
I'm currently thinking about switching up my mediaserver / htpc setup and I'll prolly end up getting a Synology NAS and run Plex server on it.

If you have a GoogleTv, there's an App to view plex content in the Play store.

As an added bonus, it's possible to run sickbeard / couchpotato / sabnzbd on a Synology as well, so it becomes a set and forget experience.

div··on [dead]
I'm not American, but this submission feels pretty devoid of content and is more something that belongs on /r/politics.

Anyone is free to create a petition on petitions.whitehouse.gov

This particular petition has only about 8000 signatures, the population of louisiana is 4,574,836 since 2011.

div··on Git add -p: a powerful git feature
Lately I find myself launching an emacs session just so I can use magit for projects I build in XCode.

It makes crafting commits a joy.

div··on Android users outraged over Motorola's broken promise
This is what drove me away from Android and just made me get an iPhone.

Much like you, I'm done with researching what device to get for weeks, finally settling on one (with the necessary compromises) and then get shafted anyway.

Plenty happy with my iPhone so far, I may reconsider Android once the no-upgrade, crappy custom skin, comes with crapware problems it's riddled with are resolved.

div··on Remind HN: iOS 6 Beta 4 has expired ("Could not activate iPhone")
Not being able to turn of my alarm this morning certainly was refreshing !
div··on A Physics Lesson: Why Cats Land on Their Feet
A lot of cats can be fussy / scared when people try to make them do things, but the cat in the video didn't seem to mind at all.
