distrill··on OneDev – A Lightweight Gitlab Alternative
isn't gitlab already the github alternative?
distrill··on Show HN: Emery – Personal productivity workspace
idk why hosting costs should factor into your value consideration. obviously if this doesn't support any calendars then there's no utility there, but i can't imagine being more eager to pay for something because it seems like it's expensive to host.
distrill··on Programming languages endorsed for server-side use at Meta
lmao definitely not
distrill··on We're going to need a lot of solar panels
tbh i just skip solar panels. it's such a grind. by the time i can make them at scale, i need so many of them, and i hate placing them. even with pretty OP construction bots it's not worth the effort IMO.

this might be mitigated if you tile something that can self expand, but even then you'll have to AFK or just have this going on for hours while you don't have access to the power you're trying to generated.

i end up scaling coal as far as i can and then rushing nuclear. nuclear is also a grind but at least you have to place them less frequently.

distrill··on Cheap junk flooding Amazon has brand names like MOFFBUZW
Ah, yeah, I suppose. Maybe I need things spelled out for me.
distrill··on Cheap junk flooding Amazon has brand names like MOFFBUZW
Unless I missed it, he didn't really talk about why these names exist, other than to suggest it might be a troll?

Related, I don't understand twitter as a place for long form content. It's difficult to read and it can't be easy to post.

distrill··on RSS is back as an underpinning to SlackOps
Yeah this really sucks. I think some do this for paywall reasons, but there are definitely models out there to allow in-reader paywall access. Stratechery has an interesting approach - when you subscribe you get a unique feed that can be cancelled when you stop paying.
distrill··on The case against CS master’s degrees
most of the eng on my team have masters degrees, and we have standups. this is common where i work and i assume other faang
distrill··on New MacBook Air with M2
I kind of liked having everything run through usb c, including power. Charging from either side was nice, and being able to charge literally everything I own with a single charger was great.
distrill··on Meta slashes hiring plans, girds for 'fierce' headwinds
there isn't really a stack rank, and they're pretty careful about not fitting performance into predetermined quota buckets. honestly i think attrition will get the numbers down fairly quickly, although unfortunately probably pretty evenly distributed among good and bad engineers.
distrill··on Meta slashes hiring plans, girds for 'fierce' headwinds
i don't know about "at any cost", but i haven't heard anyone push back against the performance and feedback culture. my team just wants to get better.

i have been really pleasantly surprised at how pervasive this mindset is among pretty much every one of my colleagues. it's something that i wanted at my previous jobs. i suppose it's not for everyone but it's been working for the small sample of people i know.

distrill··on Driverless robotaxi fleet paralyzed for hours in San Francisco
the comparison is disingenuous, but yes, i absolutely would.

"sometimes erroneously slices off your fingers" sounds scary, but if it happens less often than people in the wild, this is absolutely a net gain.

distrill··on Give up GitHub: The time has come
uh, for the record, selling data is a problem in and of itself. but good to note you don't mind as you can attach a palatable political spin to it.
distrill··on FCC commissioner wants TikTok removed from app stores over spying concerns
yeah, i use tiktok a lot and i think about this all the time. it's so odd that this isn't the first thing people are discussing. imagine if the russian government sponsored a social media application, all we would be talking about was political meddling. it's almost exactly the same thing here.
distrill··on Twitter Notes
> improve their existing service

> I don't understand the rationale behind cutting me off while I'm scrolling through Twitter simply because I'm not logged in

i mean, this really isn't a bug. this is working as intended, and i don't foresee them wanting to "fix" this anytime soon.

distrill··on Hexwords: Hex colors that are similar to words
wow. they're ugly, but that's awesome they map to green and red.
distrill··on Coinbase is rescinding already-accepted job offers
what position did you interview for? they are very definitely an algorithm interview company for technical roles.
distrill··on Could the greatest works of literature be undiscovered?
in this instance it creates influence, which is probably very valuable yes.
distrill··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
i wonder if musk will finally get out of my news cycle for 10 minutes now
distrill··on Facebook open sources Lexical, an extensible text editor library
> I think you should put this demo on the front page and the code sample on some other page. I was expecting to see the demo on the home page.

yeah lol, i think everyone in this thread had the same experience

distrill··on Facebook open sources Lexical, an extensible text editor library
GP may be responding to the fact that the vanilla quick start page is empty while the react one is not

distrill··on I need to find an apartment
i don't share this experience at all. i've used zillow and apartments.com recently (found a place through apartments.com about a year ago and just found one through zillow a few weeks ago) and had no issues. the filter options work how you'd expect, and i wasn't put in touch with any middle men - it was either the private property owner or the apartment management company who handled the leasing directly.
distrill··on The next Google
> just do the same thing as google

i know what you're saying, but this isn't exactly a triviality

distrill··on We’re the founders of Substack, we just launched an iOS app. AUA
serious question: how is this any harder than just "subscribe to n subscriptions for an x% discount"?
distrill··on Ask HN: Is it wise to accept an intern position at Meta?
it is, it is, and there are :)
distrill··on 2022 Sea Level Rise Technical Report
Yes, that's an example of the obvious pandering that I left room for.
distrill··on 2022 Sea Level Rise Technical Report
FWIW, I'm not sure if any main stream politicians are arguing today that there is no climate change. I could be wrong, but most of what I hear is a question of how much is human caused/accelerated, rather than whether it's happening at all.

There are some obvious exceptions like people pandering with "record low today, how about that global warming libs", but as far as I can tell this isn't the official position of any political office.

distrill··on How fresh grads with zero experience get hired as senior engineers
> Sometimes we do get lucky and pick up a mediocre lifer (like me)

why?

distrill··on Files – Single-file photo gallery and file manager
I understand the risks of this approach, but I just dumped everything into google photos and I'm very happy with how it's working for now. I do not miss the days of keeping track of those devices at all.
distrill··on Meta shares drop 20% on Q4 earnings miss, weak outlook
not entirely, but revenue is a huge component of earnings. this might be sort of a miss but not a huge one (from my caveman point of view, but i don't really know what i'm talking about, hence my confusion)
