distrill··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
the-algorithm is such a pretentious name for a repo
distrill··on The apps that Americans search to “delete” the most
as soon as it becomes popular there will be outcry to leave whatever you land on.
distrill··on Atlassian to shed 5 per cent of workers
wow. i usually push back against the mindless "that's too many engineers what are they all doing XDDD" meme. but this is actually insane, i can't believe there's more than a single person working on postman.
distrill··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
it does not assume that pay is or ever was correlated to how hard you work. it suggests that maybe it should be.
distrill··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
i did not allude to some great injustice, i shared an observation that gives me pause when i interact with people outside of this bubble.

i don't have a particularly high opinion of the average person, i think this community has particularly high opinions of themselves, and does not like the idea that we are not differentiated other than having interests that pay well.

distrill··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
idk why this position is so offensive.

yes i think most of the population can sub into most tech work. honestly a bootcamp will make most people ready to perform at an acceptable level for your average FAANG swe role. admittedly the interview process is a tougher experience and keeps many people out but does not reflect the actual work.

your being tired of this "cliche" does not make it untrue and this response is as lazy as "if you have any criticism of the current climate why don't you just leave". wah.

there are other ways to help people than just giving them money, like by getting them into tech. i have done this for a number of friends and they're thriving, despite initial reservations.

distrill··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
well, this is sort of the point of the cognitive dissonance isn't it?

clearly my labor is valued at the value it produces, and i will continue to maximize the income and comfort of my family. is it virtue signaling to notice that my siblings literally work more hours than me and tolerate conditions i would not tolerate?

i don't know. i continue to push them towards tech jobs. they continue to think they are "not smart enough for it", which is an insane position.

80K is a lot for restaurant work. While $40 an hour is not unheard of in the seattle restaurant area, I would not consider this a low bar to reach in that industry (or many others outside of tech tbh).
distrill··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
I feel similar cognitive dissonance every time I compare myself to people I know outside of tech. Pretty much without exception, they work harder jobs than me or my colleagues with worse hours and for a fraction of the income. I don't think my observation is tied to the housing market, other than it being a vehicle to expedite the wealth gap.
distrill··on The age of cargo cult Agile must end
i don't think gp is talking about building business logic or core product. but like maybe don't roll your own monitoring or log uptake or kanban board / task management solution.

i worked at a company that decided they needed to build their own rdbms because none of the off-the-shelf solutions were going to be able to manage their unique scale. come on.

distrill··on Health concerns grow in East Palestine, Ohio, after train derailment
i feel similarly to you but i'm finding that people who are less online than i am have no idea that anything even happened in ohio. my media is full of coverage and lots of people pulling their hair out about the lack of coverage, which seems totally inaccurate. but my family who watch tv news and spend no time on reddit or hn or tiktok basically still haven't heard about this yet.
distrill··on Fuckup Nights – Series of events where stories of failure are shared
totally reasonable
distrill··on Fuckup Nights – Series of events where stories of failure are shared
idk it feels like a boss sitting on a chair backwards. it is such a superficial signal.
distrill··on Fuckup Nights – Series of events where stories of failure are shared
I have never liked profanity in any context. Like I don't care about how anyone else talks, but it has always seemed like a lazy choice. There are better ways to get surprise or anger or rebellion across IMO than just using the same 7 words you're not "supposed" to say.
distrill··on I don't read web articles anymore, but I read books
Books are also stuck in time. I like Ben Thompson's position here (Stratechery) - his ideas are moving so quickly that he doesn't want to have them stuck in time in a book. He publishes a lot of content and regularly goes back and posts updates to his ways of thinking. I guess you can approximate this with new book editions, but there will always be outdated published versions in circulation without updated context. Ben keeps old articles as they are but includes links to updated articles.
distrill··on How Precision Time Protocol is being deployed at Meta
you skip team selection, not bootcamp. every engineer and EM go through bootcamp
distrill··on Electric ferry uses a long extension cord [video]
I have to admit, it sounds a lot crazier before you learn that there are already cables running along the channel that the boat uses. This also means that this can't generalize outside of channels that already have cabled crossings.

Given that constraint, I wonder about operating these ferries more like a ski lift then. If we're already stringing cables across the channel might it make more sense to keep them on shore away from the water?

distrill··on Leaked documents outline DHS’s plans to police disinformation
idk, this seems pretty dogmatic to me, and you just repeated my question as a statement. is better informed readers actually always the best solution? are there any conditions that could ever form where this would not be the case?

what if readers do not want more information? or what happens when they dismiss it as brainwashing without consideration? that is happening today all over fb, all over tiktok, all over reddit, and all over here as well.

distrill··on Leaked documents outline DHS’s plans to police disinformation
Do any of these "counter bad information with good information" solutions address people who seek a narrative first and are not moved by more, or more factual, information that offsets their prior belief?

This is what I'm worried about. Shutting down conversation seems like obviously not the right solution, but I'm becoming increasingly skeptical that these ideas can be countered by the truth, as more people tend to highlight what they want as being The Truth, and dissenters as being brainwashed.

distrill··on Upcoming Restriction Period for US ads about social issues, elections, politics
who knew that had a name! i always just called that Jimmy Legs
distrill··on Newsom just signed California pay transparency bill
lol
distrill··on Upcoming Restriction Period for US ads about social issues, elections, politics
this is just paid advertisements though, there's no discussion suppression
distrill··on Ask HN: Where are the good platforms for contract work?
They asked me a few times throughout the process what my rate was and it was never hinted that it was high, but when I actually got through I was pinged immediately and frequently about being "open to feedback about my rate". I think they want to have US people on offer even if they don't expect to pay any of them what they're expecting.
distrill··on The search for dirt on Mudge
if they trade on material non public information, then yes that's illegal.
distrill··on Factorio is coming to Nintendo Switch
it is a reasonably small team but definitely more than one developer

https://www.factorio.com/game/about

distrill··on Ask HN: Why are all submissions about the Apple event getting flagkilled?
ah, yes. the anti-technology-event narrative
distrill··on Removal of Heroku free product plans
it won't
distrill··on Remote startups will win the war for top talent
in a huge company sure but in smaller startups it's fine, it's nice even.

i've been at companies with 10 people and 10s of thousands and in between and obviously this stops holding true at a fairly small number of employees. but there are plenty of companies of the size that this works for fine.

distrill··on Instagram, TikTok, and the Three Trends
> I am far from the demographic for TikTok

I don't know who you think is in and out of their target demo, but it has pretty good penetration in lots of age and interest brackets. I would argue that pretty much every demographic is fair game.

distrill··on What’s going on with Google and Facebook hiring freezes?
it's not a company requirement that no one questions. it's an industry requirement that literally everyone questions all the time.
