disqard··on U.S. has bombed Fordo nuclear plant in attack on Iran
...and don't forget Gödel's Loophole (from Wikipedia):

> Gödel's Loophole is a supposed "inner contradiction" in the Constitution of the United States which Austrian-American logician, mathematician, and analytic philosopher Kurt Gödel postulated in 1947. The loophole would permit America's republican structure to be legally turned into a dictatorship.

disqard··on Ask HN: What is your fallback job if AI takes away your career?
They'll be living in bunkers in New Zealand, secured by armed guards wearing shock collars (so that the guards don't eat them).
disqard··on The Gentle Singularity
"Technology acts as an amplifier of Human intentions" -- Kentaro Toyama

What the richest and most powerful people want, happens to be "be even richer and even more powerful".

Banal, sad, and universal.

disqard··on How to get started with writing tech video essays
I had a very strong suspicion what this video was going to be -- and I guessed correctly.

This is a terrific mental model. It can be very helpful to assist perfectionists in pushing past their initial attempts, because getting the flywheel going is hard.

Thanks for sharing!

disqard··on Computer science has one of the highest unemployment rates
Great point! And also an uncomfortable truth: this sort of use (to replace human jobs) will be a net negative on GDP. That secretary will now have to make do with a lot less money, so they'll make fewer/cheaper purchases, etc.

However, the "number go up" crowd doesn't give a fuck about the secretaries -- so they will chant "AI! AI! AI!" to juice the stock and make out like bandits, while they still can.

disqard··on Sam Altman and Jony Ive Will Force A.I. Into Your Life
(Totally sarcastic here)

Maybe it'll be a collar you wear around your neck.

You can "sub-vocalise" and talk to it.

Jony Ive can make sure it's styled and made out of shell cordovan leather or somesuch -- the fanbois are gonna go wild for it.

Soon, everywhere you look, people will look like they're into BDSM.

(and guess who will "Dominate" you?)

disqard··on US Trade Court finds Trump tariffs illegal
Fair point!

I thought more like you in the past -- I was near-certain he'd toss the whole lot of J6 rioters under the bus.

When he didn't, I've recalibrated to: if it "owns the libs", he'll pardon them (or something actionably similar).

disqard··on US Trade Court finds Trump tariffs illegal
Hmmm, I think a "pardon factory" would counter that.

(not supporting anything about the current strategy... just pointing out that the "line in the sand" doesn't imply that any individuals would actually get in trouble)

disqard··on Ask HN: Decided I no longer want to be a SWE – what next?
> Clout and money don't really mean much but living comfortably with time and capital to do things you like, do.

You sound like a mature person. Thank you for sharing that perspective!

disqard··on We broke down the Sam Altman and Jony Ive video
Not invasive enough for me! I'm holding out for my neural implant, with glial scarring... mmmm, can't wait!
disqard··on At Amazon, some coders say their jobs have begun to resemble warehouse work
I'll quote one of the wisest people in tech I know of, Kentaro Toyama:

"Technology acts as an amplifier of human intentions"

...so, if someone is just doing a sloppy job, AI-assisted vibe coding will enable them to do it faster.

disqard··on Please Fund More Science (2020)
My personal theory is that tech folks are often under-educated -- in the sense that they've specialized so much, that they missed out on a well-rounded human education.

This makes it easy to hijack the "ooh look! shiny/sexy technology" part of their brain, to work on Palantir-type stuff, whereas anyone with a more liberal, broad education would go "wtf! I don't want to help build that!"

disqard··on America is in danger of experiencing an academic brain drain
The administration can shake you like a snow globe longer than you can keep functioning.

(what if Harvard loses half of its faculty next, because some visa category is declared "illegal" by the administration?)

disqard··on Planetfall
Wow! Among the rampant cynicism and runaway sophistry here, one often finds gems like this comment, which keep me coming back (and nudge me to be less cynical myself).

Thank you for sharing your wisdom!

disqard··on Getting a paper accepted
I highly recommend Nobel Laureate Sir Peter Medawar's 1964 talk:

"Is the scientific paper a fraud?"

disqard··on Watching AI drive Microsoft employees insane
You just inspired a thought:

What if the goalpost is shifted backwards, to the 90% mark (instead of demanding that AI get to 100%)?

* Big corps could redefine "good enough" as "what the SotA AI can do" and call it good.

* They could then layoff even more employees, since the AI would be, by definition, Good Enough.

(This isn't too far-fetched, IMO, seeing how we're seeing calls for copyright violation to be classified as legal-when-we-do-it)

disqard··on Watching AI drive Microsoft employees insane
Haha, I like your take!

My variation was:

disqard··on Watching AI drive Microsoft employees insane
Thank you for sharing this!

When I use AI, I keep it on a short leash.

Meanwhile, folks like this ("I bought a rocket company") are essentially using it to decide where to plough their stratospheric wealth, so they can grow it even further.

Perhaps they'll lose a cufflink in the eventual crash, but they're so rich, I don't think they'll lose their shirt. Meanwhile, the tech job market is f**ed either way.

Beware, your comment is likely to age incredibly poorly.

Also, I wouldn't want to work in the same team as you, if that's how you communicate.

disqard··on Jules: An asynchronous coding agent
Shhhh... don't tell the plebes what it really means to "2x their productivity".

Seriously though, this kind of tech-assisted work output improvement has happened many times in the past, and by now we should all have been working 4-hour weeks, but we all know how it has actually worked out.

I kinda hear you -- there's definitely gradations at work here -- but the sentiment you've expressed is also fast losing veracity. For instance:
