disqard··on MNT Reform is an open hardware laptop, designed and assembled in Germany
Thank you for sharing your personal experience!

I often think "I should get me one of those" (MNT Pocket, or similar form-factor), but with my visual acuity getting worse (got my reading glasses in the past year), my X1 carbon might just remain my mainstay.

I don't know why you're being downvoted.

So, lately I've been trying to decouple AI from Capitalism, and it's starting to explain a lot of things, like:

* excessive hype

* doing layoffs, and scapegoating AI

* pushing AI into everything (Copilot)

* etc.

From a POSIWID perspective, you are right.

From a "we live in a civilized society" perspective, I can see why some people are outraged about his killing.

Finally, looking at the balance sheet of his accomplishments, I can also see why the pitchfork crowd is cheering.

disqard··on How the Vision Pro Rollout Inflamed Tensions at Apple
> Across several stores, salespeople reported doing dozens of demos without closing a single sale. “We sell maybe one a week,” Barrett said in late May, two weeks after the union had voted to authorize a strike in order to make a final push for a contract.

> “Uh, none a week,” Billy Jarboe, a coworker, corrected her. “If we do a return, we’re negative.”

I appreciate your nuanced reading.

Yes, it's possible that it came from a place of wanting to help.

And, after the offer was spurned, the kindness was immediately replaced with wrath, at "how dare she turn me down?"

So, both can be true: she can be kind and helpful, but also petty and vindictive, and unable to see other people's perspective. Being permanently surrounded by sycophants and yes-men/women will probably distort most people like that.

Indeed, one of the epistemological lessons for me when confronting the power of LLMs is that a sort of "intellectual capability" can emerge in any system, from sheer scale/complexity alone.

I think this is starting to play out.

disqard··on Why I may ‘hire’ AI instead of a graduate student
OTOH, yes.

However, the person is also sufficiently self-aware to share their thought process (and candid about its shortsightedness).

To me, that made it worth reading (even though it has a sad message).

How did you realize you were shadowbanned?

I'm curious because I sometimes wonder, if that happened to me, would it affect the way in which I engage with this website?

FWIW, I often lurk, but sometimes engage (like right now). Perhaps it could happen to me and I would not realize it for a while...

> AI is a threat to the “enshittification economy” because it lets us route around it.

This is prescient -- I wonder if the Big Tech entities see it this way. Maybe, even if they do, they're 100% committed to speedrunning the current late-stage-cap wave, and therefore unable to do anything about it.
