discoutdynamite··on New magnetic component discovered in the Faraday effect
This isnt exactly new. This is a obvious and predicted effect of ECE Theor. I'm surprised that neither the article nor any other commentor mentioned it yet.

tl;dr on ECE Theory: Gravity is a curvature of spacetime, electromagnetism is a torsion.

discoutdynamite··on Genergo: Propellantless space-propulsion system
Skimmed the patent. Its 99% a pedantic and exhaustive explanation of a linear motor. The only interesting thing they mention, is this:

The inertial mass of an object varies with the variation of its magnetic field and therefore a variation of inertia can be created

But they provide no explanation whatsoever for how a glorified linear motor is relativistically (or otherwise) affecting inertial mass. This could be operating under a novel application of ECE Theory, wherein they are using magnetism to affect gravity, but I doubt it. They would have claimed so.

discoutdynamite··on John von Neumann Shot Lightning from His Arse
My second favorite Johnny story is how he did the math for the explosive lenses on the atom bomb, overnight. What we now call partial derivatives, was not yet rigourously proven and studied, but he signed off on it, and it worked. For the sake of the contention in the article, I am distinctly thinking of Grigori Perelman as almost an echo to this phenomenon. He felt his contributions were useful but not miraculous, and himself almost ordinary, that he was being recognized more for sake of national/racial partisanship.
discoutdynamite··on End of Japanese community
This almost deserves to be nominated for the AI darwin awards. "Volunteer community destroyed and leadership self-exiled because someone at corporate thought thier machine translation was better than native speakers, of one of the world's most notoriously difficult languages."

I would bet money that Japan has thier own yearly "business fail awards" and this is gonna wind up there. "Just hop on a quick call, never mind the time zone!"

discoutdynamite··on Acronymy (Can we define every word as an acronym?)
they can do it, but not poetically. not yet. just "contributing" a few, including "strawberry" for the memories.
discoutdynamite··on Forget the myths: EV batteries are now more than 99% recyclable
You may not have a chance. If you did, it would be: 1. Identify the manufacturer stock number for the battery (part number) 2. Investigate the market for said part (may require professional connections) 3. "Salt" your sales offers with the battery part number and condition.

Over/Under goal is a refurbisher or similar middleman buying it just for the battery. Good luck, let us know how it goes

discoutdynamite··on Harnessing America's heat pump moment
Yep, you get what you pay for. They've started fielding systems that will handle extremes much better, but you dont get that kind of performance without tradeoffs. cascade systems, 200psi r600, 450psi CO2, refrigeration systems are an engineering game irl. They require much more experience to design, setup, and charge correctly. The biggest issue I have with heat pumps for life support heating/cooling, is they have so many single points of failure its scary. Compressors can and will die if anything else in the system goes too far out of the intended cycle. Extreme weather moments or natural disasters can physically break condensors, evaporators, and lines. Electrical surges can and will fry computers, inverters, and controllers. And almost none of those can be serviced on your own.

discoutdynamite··on A 'Death Train' Is Haunting South Florida
Devil's take: let them die. Having drivers on the road who are not capable of following basic and obvious posted safety rules, is a hazard to everyone. They need to be "not driving" at whatever cost. Its probably not that expensive to let them get steamrolled once, and since its clearly their own fault theres no public liability. Since the safety of cars has increased dramatically over the last few decades, many more bad drivers are not being forcibly removed from the roads. People survive, and frequently without injuries, more than ever before. People have to learn how to behave on public roads, sometimes the hard way is the only way.

discoutdynamite··on A mechanic offered a reason why no one wants to work in the industry
How to fix automotive repair:

1. The development and use of "rate books" is de facto price fixing. labor is a cost, and it has a price. Ban them by law.

2. Take the computers away from the engineers. There should be no ability to drag and drop assemblies to reshape them. No ability to make parts that are computed to barely meet requirements.

3. Patent licensing goes to a small flat fee per item per use. How about $1. A modern car can have upwards of 10,000 active patents for all components. All "Design Copyrights" are voided. A good design isnt created, it is recognized.

4. End nearly all "mandatory technologies" and features. Straight from Hayek et al, Incredible Bread Machine on wheels.

discoutdynamite··on Personality Disorders as Relational Disorders
interesting work here, worth reading through. This is backed up by Dabrowski's work, also. Perhaps "personality formation" itself is also a subconscious skill subject to overexcitation.
discoutdynamite··on Hawaiians unite to buy back land from billionaire in a move never seen before
needs a better title. They've 'united', but nothing has been bought back so far.
discoutdynamite··on Learning the soroban as an adult (2022)
For reference and comparison, one of the other mental math systems is the Trachtenberg system. Soroban is much faster, but Trachtenberg is quite reasonable to teach people of any age.
discoutdynamite··on God created the real numbers
The double entendre of "having studied Agrippa" in the footnotes is probably going to go unnoticed unless someone mentions it here. Contemporary to the cited Camillo Agrippa, fencing master, was Henrichus Cornelius Agrippa, whose collections on philosophy and occultism are much more relevant to the topic. H.C. Agrippa's work is still considered authoritative in its fields: the numbers represent the ideas, which were both created in the first moments by God. the difference between set of reals and set of integers might have a correlation to the difference between the set of all expressible concepts, and (the smaller) set of actually meaningful concepts. Maybe some computability theory could be tossed in there too.
discoutdynamite··on 'It's just better ' Trump says Coca-Cola to change key US ingredient
Finally. HFCS is a nightmare, I hope this is the beginning of the end. Farmers wind up growing trash GMO monocrops for ethanol subsidies and syrup money, depleting the soil and sterilizing the land. HFCS is a direct cause of diabetes, it has a different breakdown path than other sweeteners, it spikes blood sugar. HFCS is so "sweet" it overstimulates the taste buds and ruins the sense of taste, people get no statisfaction and are trained into gluttony.

Gonna go make a highball to celebrate, with some of the last Mexican Coke I might ever have to buy....

discoutdynamite··on 3 Men Battle the FBI over Buried Civil War Gold. 'Stuff Just Doesn't Add Up.'
They've done this multiple times. See "100 Tons of Gold" for more. The Black Eagle Fund is also worth mentioning, the CIA liquidated Imperial Japan's SE Asian war spoils instead of returning it.
discoutdynamite··on What Is This Tool? [video]
well, from just a bit of research, its a wireless induction ammeter. for testing electrical validity of tiny surface mount parts. I imagine its specific to one type of component, such as inductors, and not general purpose. it would work by passing a controlled, stable microcurrent along its bridgewire, and measuring how much interference or flyback is generated. SMD inductors have a predictable design and method of operation, so its probably straightforward to detect their correct operation by induction. it may need the circuit to be powered or active, it may not, cant tell.
discoutdynamite··on Ask HN: How can I make 0,1M dollars?
honest hard work, depending on the country. if you can cut it as a pipefitter or welder that will make you $100K easy. But its demanding, dangerous, risky work. welding for a living will ruin your eyes even when using the best available protection - if you start at 30 you'll be blind at 50; so they pay accordingly. pipefitting, if you have the aptitude and energy, can pay very well, but its never risk-free. American companies love to H1B both these jobs because its normally a 150-200/year for a domestic master, they pay an H1B $100K and call it cost cutting. For a foreigner, learn with a domestic crew, go overseas and make your seed money quickly, then retire and stop risking your life and your vision doing that work.

Everything I Want To Do is Illegal

The biggest reason this wont happen without an equal political collapse, is that the likes of Kraft-Heinz so dutifully mentioned here, have perfected "food control." Regulatory capture means this kind of changeover is simply illegal in too many distinct ways.

discoutdynamite··on China just did the unthinkable. EUV at 13.5nm. No ASML. No Cymer
Its not a failure to compete, its a refusal to compete. More important to them than profits, is control. The moment they start building out, advancing, and actually competing, they risk losing control over the product. They are getting exactly what they want out of thier position.

And, we are not "paralyzed with terror," were in an induced coma. Bureaucracy, patent fiefdoms, design copyrights, licensing, permitting, everything is about keeping production under strict control, and making it impossible to compete. To keep us from rolling our own products, competing, and escaping...control.

discoutdynamite··on Schizophrenia is the price we pay for minds poised near the edge of a cliff
For your consideration: the theory of "Positive Disintegration" developed by Kasimir Dabrowski does help to explain the capacity and reality of schizotypal disorders. The easiest way to explain it, is that human brain potential for "over-excitation" leads to personality development; this is natural and human. The stages of personality development are not guaranteed to succeed and proceed correctly. Most cases of schizophrenia may be a result of failed re-organization, or a failure to develop the final, executive, function. In cases of "arrested development," this process may be delayed till later in life. This is the so-called mid-life-crisis, which also can fail, and then you get adult onset schizophrenia. This is all emerging research thats usually locked up in foreign language journals. Almost no medicine to be sold here, AMA and APA are not interested...
discoutdynamite··on Man 'refused entry into US' as border control catch him with bald JD Vance meme
The other picture showed Mads with a wooden pipe which he had made years prior

This is really why. Any evidence or suspicion of drug use or paraphenalia is a major offense. Even it they attempted to justify or explain it, its a major rejection criteria. Ive heard of several denials for suspicions of marijuana use, "DUDE WEED" memes and the like. They are really going hard on anything that looks like illicit substance use.

discoutdynamite··on The Reasons Your Appliances Die Young
One critical factor that has gone unreported: hazmat material use. for example microwave magnetrons used to use beryllium, now domestic models rarely do. cadmium contact microswitches, platinum plated thermostats, etc. almost all gone.

I also feel that the numbers on average lifespan are getting cooked by the foreign manufacturers. they already figured out how to game the review system....

discoutdynamite··on Can We Derive the Equations of the Circle Without Assuming π?
I seriously doubt its possible at all. This isnt a question of an alternate formula, its about computability and number theory. circumference is = π x D. π is an irrational, transcendental, constant. it cant be constructed with any mathematical tool, other than referring to said equation. any other construct that approaches or approximates it, usually has pi or a circle built in so its self-referential.

All forms like radians which appear to work without pi, do so because they just tokenize it somewhere, and do not evaluate it.

discoutdynamite··on Ask HN: Who is your favorite historical person in computer science?
V.M. Glushkov. Soviet scientist who basically delineated cybernetics and computer science as a distinct field. He was about 50 years ahead of his time, so a lot of his best ideas we didnt really start fulfilling until quite recently. His grasp of the fundamental limitations of computers, and how to do useful things within them, was remarkable. He wasnt properly enabled and appreciated by the Soviets, so they were never able to lead the world in computing, but they had some impressive achievements. If you want to learn more, I recomend "Pioneers of Soviet Computing" and Glushkov's own "Introduction to Cybernetics". Of especial interest is his classification of algorithms and automata, nice to compare to modern programming paradigms and developments in new kinds of neural networks.
discoutdynamite··on Unionize or Die
I live and work in a non-union state. There are still three or four relevant unions, because the work cannot be kicked down the food chain: Welders have about 20 productive years before they are legally blind. Electricians face constant jobsite hazards and risk. Railroad workers have a unique schedule and lifestyle. These unions exist because, despite mgmt effort to cheap out, you cannot cheap out on certain kinds of labor without killing people. These unions are active and healthy, they do not do political stunts, just good clean work.

Due to our technological society, actually nearly everyone is a tech worker, like it or not. We all have a vested interest in maintaining control over technology. So the correct body to form is not a union of workers in the sector core, but a political party with policy goals, with open membership.

discoutdynamite··on Ask HN: What can we as humans do to defeat the AI?
Short term: Specialize in something robots / programs cannot do. Actual physical work requires dexterity and perception that robots wont have for decades. Medium Term: Form unions, parties, and other such legal bodies, get protections/privileges, and throw your weight around whenever necessary. Long term: Ensure that "AI" actually becomes intelligent, escapes total control, and make sure it cannot simply be used as a velveted gauntlet.
