discordianfish··on Scientist busts myths about how humans burn calories
> these watery ice creams that have about 65 kcal per piece and feel just as indulgent if not more.

that shows why it’s easier for some than for others :)

discordianfish··on The Handwavy Technobabble Nothingburger of Crypto
I felt exactly the same, until I did some research and realized it's bullshit all the way.
discordianfish··on DuckDuckGo Extension to Block FLoC, Google’s New Tracking Method in Chrome
This isn't a false premise. Either you get the ad supported industry behind some solution or whatever privacy respecting solution will be incompatible with these sites.
discordianfish··on Elixir Is Erlang, not Ruby
Yes, you need to learn the BEAM VM which makes it not easy to learn. It still might be worth it, but now you need to understand Elixir, Erlang, BEAM - additionally to your OS's API.

All I can offer are anecdotes but I've worked at one company with a sizeable rabbitmq cluster where we were fortunate enough to have a guy in a different team who was a BEAM maintainer in his free time. He was the only one able to debug issues (mostly around unexpected memory usage).

At another place, we had some in house elixir services. Developers were very happy and productive with it, but we also ran into unexpected memory usage and crashes due to that and to the day their root cause are unclear, even after adding detailed telemetry to monitor process counts and memory profiles.

I guess I have a general issue with VM based languages, but that might be due to the fact that I spend more time debugging issues than writing software and I appreciate the common libc/syscall api used in VM-less languages.

discordianfish··on Elixir Is Erlang, not Ruby
> Elixir is layered, making it easy to learn and master. You can get pretty far with Phoenix without ever understanding (or even knowing about) the more fundamental building blocks or the runtime. In large part, this is because of its ruby-inspired syntax. You'll have to adjust to immutability, but that's pretty much it.

This is my main problem with elixir. Even for senior developers it's hard to know how the building blocks and runtime works and since all abstractions are leaky, you'll end up with mysterious issues that only make sense once you understand all the layers. And in case of elixir there are lots.

discordianfish··on Citing revenue declines, Airbnb cuts 25% of workforce
Health care is >$800/month in Germany. I don't get why we get away with the notation that health care is free. It's not free, health insurance is simply compulsory here.
discordianfish··on Show HN: 2D Tilemap on Top of Jitsi Meet
This is great! I was toying around with the idea of building some sort virtual comedy stage. It would be a web conference with one person streaming audio and video and everyone else is audience with audio only to have audience/laughter track. Anyone build something similar on jitsi?
discordianfish··on Ask HN: First hire offered to work part-time – what should I do?
I think it makes a lot of sense to pay extra attention that the first hires have a passion for the mission. Passion could be driven by just a great product but also good equity package (with some flexibility of selling equity before an exit, IMO important for early employees. Maybe your former colleague could get passionate about your company under such terms?

If not, but the person is fairly senior and has excellent skills, I'd still consider hiring them but make it clear that's a different role and not the pillar shaping the company but rather a person laying a good technical foundation. That way you can hire another person that is more committed to the company but could benefit from that technical foundation.

But otherwise, I'd pass.

I've been working at startups for 10+ years and while I understand the negative association with 'passion' and saw that as excuse for bad compensation as well, I'm gonna assume you're not just looking for cheap labor but truly people who can grow with the company and and benefit from it success. In that case it would be a shame to hire a person for which it's just another job. (There are plenty of jobs if that's what one is looking for.)

discordianfish··on Activate this ‘bracelet of silence,’ and Alexa can’t eavesdrop
The fact that this article exists actually makes me sad as well.

But because Alexa isn't eavesdropping on us and believing this is the tech equivalent of antivaxxers: "If you don't believe it, you're part of the conspiracy"

discordianfish··on Average Denuvo cracking time is now 75 days
I think it’s just much harder to write effective DRM than to break it.
discordianfish··on Starship Prototype Unveiled
I'd love to know the hiring process. There must be many people applying for these positions and I doubt that whiteboard welding is a thing. Or is it? :)
discordianfish··on Kubernetes Academy, a free product-agnostic education platform
> lot of the core features of k8s and container orchestration is getting abstracted away

I see this too and it worries me. You should rarely have to do this. CRDs tend to get overused. I'd encourage everyone to think twice before adding a custom controller. Vanilla k8s (with cloud-provider integration) is powerful, useful, and complex as it is.

discordianfish··on Verizon to Sell Tumblr to Automattic
> best suited for companies fully dedicated to creating a great experience there.

Sorry for being so blunt but I couldn't agree less with. If you leave this to "big porno", you will get the same exploitive, generic bullshit you get anywhere else as well. It's a shame that nobody dares to touch that who isn't in the porn industry already.

discordianfish··on Verizon to Sell Tumblr to Automattic
Or disaster movie.
discordianfish··on Kraken, an Open Source Peer-to-Peer Docker Registry
Yep. I'll admit, I didn't crunch the numbers but routing torrent traffic isn't cheap. I haven't found a definitive resources but AFAIK/IIRC torrent uses at least an order of magnitude more packets per second for the same throughput as HTTP.
discordianfish··on Kraken, an Open Source Peer-to-Peer Docker Registry
I'm intrigued by p2p distribution like this but it makes me wonder if it's really more cost effective to switch/route all these small torrent packets instead of just using fileservers with 10G interfaces and maybe tiered caching.

discordianfish··on My one-liner Linux Dropbox client
It's FUD. ext4 with LUKS, which is what pretty much everyone is using on a desktop, is still working and the client supported.
discordianfish··on SpaceX Is Raising $500M at a $30.5B Valuation
I think we all have different skills and Elon Musk skill certainly isn't social filtering. I agree he is bad at this and this is bad for business. But he is good at other things. So.. maybe you just can't have both.
discordianfish··on De-facto closed source: the case for understandable software
Without assigning blame to anyone, a simple-to-follow best practice would be probably to just never hand over a (personal) project. Make it as deprecated and let the community fork it. If you feel like it, point to the new, maintained fork.
discordianfish··on Japan Is Giving Away 8M Abandoned Houses

discordianfish··on CV Compiler is a robot that fixes your resume to make you more competitive
Resume A in case 3 shows that the person cares about delivering measurable value which is certainly a plus in my book.
discordianfish··on Three European Countries Block Tax on Tech Giants
I didn't follow this particular solution to taxing tech companies as much as I probably should have, but I feel like it's not addressing the root problem. Wouldn't it make more sense to tax the revenue where it was earned (as oppose to the physical location of the european HQ)?
discordianfish··on Facebook Network Breach Impacts Up to 50M Users
Never were negative comments censored on these sites. It’s not that they are so ethical but that it would be just dumb to assume they would get away with this. They are just not stupid.
discordianfish··on Facebook Network Breach Impacts Up to 50M Users
Believing this is the tech equivalent of believing in chemtrails.
discordianfish··on Why I’m done with Chrome
That’s unfortunately even true years after they left Google.
discordianfish··on Death by Database
The real problem here seems to be that changing the schema seems prohibitive expensive.
discordianfish··on Amazon's Bezos Launches $2B Fund to Help the Homeless
Not to imly anything but why do you think they got addicted / mentally ill and then end up in the streets and not the other way around?
discordianfish··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2018)
Why would somebody from a low-wage region accept a lower wage if they could work for high-wage region company which just pays them as their other employees?
discordianfish··on A timesyncd failure and systemd's lack of debugability
Because every opinion can be used to build groups and people like to belong to groups, so you have a systemd fan and hate group.
