dirtydroog··on James Damore and three others end Google suit
I'm a European living and working in Europe. I have no idea what a 'bro' is.
dirtydroog··on James Damore and three others end Google suit
Rogan was labelled alt-right after he interviewed Gavin McInness and Alex Jones again (a comical interview btw). That may have been cancelled out by him interviewing Bernie Sanders though.
dirtydroog··on James Damore and three others end Google suit
Would you hire someone who was really good at something but hated doing it?
dirtydroog··on James Damore and three others end Google suit
Parent is essentially playing the 'so what you're saying is...' card.

He didn't cause a PR mess, whomever leaked his post to the wider world did. And I could be wrong, but I seem to recall he posted what he did weeks, if not months, before it was leaked (in a heavily modified form too)
dirtydroog··on How does Chrome decide what to highlight when you double-click Japanese text?
TIL: Some languages do not have spaces
dirtydroog··on TempleOS
Technologies such as DPDK are designed to get the kernel out of the way. For some applications it has no reason to play a part once the system has booted, it's just an overhead.

For what you're doing I recall reading about IncludeOS[1] which seems to have similar goals

dirtydroog··on A self-killing web site requested by a customer (2011)
It's not the async logic that's hard, it's the parsing and handling of the HTTP protocol. Apache had years to get it right and figure out the workarounds for non-compliant black boxes. It's this that keeps it around unfortunately. Its architecture is obsolete and a waste of resources.

Nginx does the async stuff properly I believe but there's still the nonsense of forking child processes.

Is this an ad for a company masquerading as a story about how marketing finally worked for said company?
dirtydroog··on No cookie consent walls, scrolling isn’t consent, says EU data protection body
Non-personalised ads command a far lower CPM than others.

One possible outcome is that publishers have to display even more ads to make up the shortfall. That'll just annoy users even more and so they'll either stop visiting the site make ad-blocking even more prevalent. Either way, the publisher is really the one losing out.

dirtydroog··on No cookie consent walls, scrolling isn’t consent, says EU data protection body
To play devil's advocate... why should a publisher be forced to give away their content for free? It costs money to produce and serve content. Like it or not, advertising pays their bills.
dirtydroog··on No cookie consent walls, scrolling isn’t consent, says EU data protection body
Legally they have to show the consent screen again if anything changes, such as them working with a new vendor, of if the IAB releases a new version of the Global Vendor List.

dirtydroog··on Re: Integrating "safe" languages into OpenBSD? (2017)
Don't worry about it. My comment seems to be up and down like a yoyo.

I hope this guy got permission from these people to post their names on a public forum. Also, there's really nothing in those names to tell if someone is a PoC or not. At least one of those names is both a male and female name.

dirtydroog··on Re: Integrating "safe" languages into OpenBSD? (2017)
Is it 'really toxic', or just uninformed? Note that the email conversation was from a few years ago.
dirtydroog··on RustBoyAdvance-NG: GameBoy Advance emulator and debugger, written in rust
Because porting to another langugage is rarely interesting unless there's a performance or resource usage win. For example, if all of wc, ls, grep etc were ported to Rust and they ran far more quickly, that'd be post worthy.

Someone compiled linux with a C++ compiler a few months ago and the compiler found a few bugs. That was interesting and useful.

dirtydroog··on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS’ snap obsession has snapped me off of it
Is this an issue if we upgrade to 20.04 on our GCP machines? Is all this nonsense there for server releases?
dirtydroog··on Underwriters and Short Sellers Manipulate Share Prices
Very angry, but somewhat interesting.
dirtydroog··on Language Design: Use 'ident: Type' not 'Type ident'
Found the python programmer!
dirtydroog··on Language Design: Use 'ident: Type' not 'Type ident'
What's the point of the 'val' keyword? It reminds me of Visual Basic's "Dim x As String".
dirtydroog··on Language Design: Use 'ident: Type' not 'Type ident'
I find the opposite, I can't stand it. Give me curly braces over arbitrary indentation any day.
dirtydroog··on Language Design: Use 'ident: Type' not 'Type ident'
> 1. Names are more important than types

I can't really agree with this at all. With type aliasing the new typename can render the variable name pretty much redundant.

dirtydroog··on Git Branch Naming Conventions
We release our code as a debian package that stored in jfrog and then used to build GCP images for each release.

dirtydroog··on Git Branch Naming Conventions
A handy thing about jira is that the ticket picks up the commit automatically, so anyone viewing that ticket can go straight to the changes if the branch begins with the ticket id.

I don't what the definition of a 'feature' is. Is it a task or something bigger than a task?

I'm not a huge fan of overly verbose commit messages. They can make the job of compiling release notes annoying.

dirtydroog··on Can QUIC match TCP’s computational efficiency?
But is there any point it profiling on a laptop? Thermal throttling is a bigger issue than on a desktop, where even there you have to faff about with C states if you want somewhat believable stats.
dirtydroog··on Rules of thumb for a 1x developer
I worked in embedded (mobile phone OS) about 8 years ago (UK). The pay was appalling for such a high-skilled job. I could have doubled my salary if I changed to flinging out JS for some website.
dirtydroog··on Redis 6.0 GA
Why does redis recommend to not use huge tables? I'd like to experiment with using DPDK with it, but that requires huge tables
dirtydroog··on Popcorn Linux
I wonder if Linus will complain about using curly braces for single-line if statements! e.g.

+#ifdef CONFIG_POPCORN_CHECK_SANITY

+ if (WARN_ON(distributed_remote_process(current))) {

+ printk(" file write at remote thread is not supported yet\n");

+ }

+#endif
