dirtikiti··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
Browsers literally sandbox their own tabs.

And the entire Linux user space is already sandboxed by design. This is why you type sudo.

If os and software developers actually designed with the Linux filesystem in mind, there would be no need for Flatpaks and Snaps and AppImages.

There's a whole directory for user applications and their libraries.

/usr

Keep using it, there's tons of bugs for you to find in Fedora.

My favorite was a system-upgrade that installed broken video drivers, as recently as late 30x releases.

dirtikiti··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
What part about that is puzzling?

A population 30-40x the size, split out over 50 states, with different laws and regulations, different political governance, different geographical and economic considerations...

Why wasn't Switzerland compared to the rest of Europe?

Comparing the whole of Europe to the whole of the US is a closer comparison.

dirtikiti··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
Not a fair comparison. 30-40x population difference.

I have lived in both Europe and the US. And I have installed fiber internet commercially.

When I lived in Italy, the best internet I could get was DSL, while a few years before, in the US, I had cable internet at more than 3x the speed.

Likewise, there are still rural communities without access to truly high speed internet in the US, as I'm sure there are in Europe.

The big telcos were broken up in the US decades ago. Now you have a few major providers who collude, and a bunch of small regional providers just trying to turn a profit.

The large providers service so many accounts it costs billions to upgrade the infrastructure at their end -- before even rolling out last mile to consumers.

And for the regional providers, its not worth the cost to upgrade both their infrastructure and the last mile infrastructure.

Also, population density is not the same thing in the US as it is in Europe.

US large cities are sprawling. European large cities are not.

It is far less expensive to service a large city in Europe than a large city in the US.

Weird, thats like the exact opposite of a nazi.

dirtikiti··on New York passes pied-a-terre tax
>>But as the article points out, this is an expected outcome and will be blunted by subsequent tax rate decreases.

the tax rate decrease will be on the multi-million dollar homes.

not on the new property tax valuations of everything else.

dirtikiti··on Citing 'severe' math deficits, UC faculty demand a return to SAT tests for STEM
I know, personal responsibility is such a vile concept.

Everyone can be so much happier if they can blame everyone else and the system for everything bad in their life.

dirtikiti··on Citing 'severe' math deficits, UC faculty demand a return to SAT tests for STEM
That's exactly what my single parent did. Took responsibility for being a teenage parent, joined a trade union, paid more for a crappy apartment on the edge of a good school district, and busted their ass everyday to provide.

I don't see what you're arguing here? You're the only one playing a stupid game.

If school choice is a thing, everyone can choose where they send their kid to school... they don't have to pay more for a crappy apartment on the edge of a good school district.

And to top it off, the only poor people this actually affects are poor people who live in an area where there is an actual choice of schools to be made.

Which means there is most likely access to transportation.

dirtikiti··on News about Raspberry Pi 6 and Microcontroller Development
I'm a jerk because I've bought them and tried to find a use case for them, but found they weren't as good as other solutions?

You have issues.

dirtikiti··on News about Raspberry Pi 6 and Microcontroller Development
I have bought an rpi at every generation. And I still have yet to find an actual use for them.

Everything they do from a compute perspective is just better with a mini pc or old laptop with a mobile spec chip.

Everything they do from a programmability perspective is just better with a microcontroller specific to the task.

I just don't see the actual market position for these things. They were supposed to be a cheap board, but you can't actually buy them cheaply because the vendors upcharge so much.

dirtikiti··on New York passes pied-a-terre tax
I would love a VAT tax instead of the never ending stream of taxes we pay on everything else.

Americans are stupid. They see a higher tax on an iPhone they don't need, they will cry about it.

But they pay more at the end of the year on income tax, property tax, car registration, etc., they could care less.

Most Americans don't even look at their pay stub, and are more than happy to overpay their income taxes every paycheck so they get a bigger tax return at the end of the year.

They don't realize that money was theirs to begin with.

They complain about not being able to become wealthy while they give the government an interest free loan, when they could be investing that money and earning on it.

dirtikiti··on New York passes pied-a-terre tax
this is literally a cover to overhaul the property tax assessment system in New York.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/new-york-passes-ma...

"While the tax seems large, experts say the city's antiquated assessment and valuation system dramatically undervalues properties, reducing the burden. City valuations can often be 10% or less of the true market value, they said.

Rather than overhaul the system immediately, the city will gradually update valuations – and the tax – according to the budget documents. Starting in the 2028-2029 tax year, the property values will be based on comparable sales. Since valuations will skyrocket, the tax rates will fall to compensate."

this is, at minimum, a 10% increase in ALL property taxes. And the people most affected will be the lower and middle class.

dirtikiti··on New York passes pied-a-terre tax
no, you're right.

it's flying under the radar because people don't read these things and critically think about them.

as per usual, the middle class will take the hit. the people that voted for this will become poorer, and the wealthy will go on as normal.

dirtikiti··on New York passes pied-a-terre tax
No, the goal is to overhaul the property tax system.

This is going to raise property taxes for everyone.

The ultra wealthy can just pack up and move. It doesn't affect them in the slightest.

But in two years when the property tax overhaul is complete, the middle class will foot the bill. As per usual.

dirtikiti··on New York passes pied-a-terre tax
So you want to tax something that has already been taxed throughout the course of someone's life, just because they want to give it to their kids?

The only tax that is fair to everyone is a sales tax.

dirtikiti··on New York passes pied-a-terre tax
Property tax is not a workable wealth tax.

It's a barrier for low income people to buy homes.

Sales tax is a workable wealth tax.

dirtikiti··on Citing 'severe' math deficits, UC faculty demand a return to SAT tests for STEM
>> School choice is bad because the only people who benefit from school choice are already wealthy - they can afford to transport their child to the school of their choice.

So what?

If "level the playing field" means my kid gets a sub standard education because you have to constantly lower the bar, I don't want to play your game.

This stuff isn't new. Everyone understands the importance of education, and everyone understands the importance of being involved in your child's education.

It isn't about poor and minority. It's about being a good parent.

Some people don't have that ability, and my kid shouldn't be punished for it, regardless of the money in my wallet.

There are plenty of examples of single parent and low income households where they value education and push their kids to doing better.

At some point, it has to be about personal responsibility and not blaming everyone else for your failure to be a good parent.

dirtikiti··on GitHub Copilot is moving to usage-based billing
The sidebar method is better than agents for many reasons.

The main one is I'd rather review the limited changes of a one shot prompt than ton of changes made by an agent.

Another being the massive use of tokens agents force you into. As the context window fills up, the quality goes down, and the token usage spikes as the model traps itself into low confidence reasoning loops.

Agents ain't it.

dirtikiti··on Show HN: I've built a nice home server OS
I dont get it.

Why do I need immutable if I'm just running docker?

Why do I need a specialized Debian variant when I can install docker on Debian or Ubuntu in a couple minutes?

And maintenance happens directly through the package manager, either through the distro maintained repo, or by adding the official docker repos?

This immutable fad needs to go away. So does flatpak and snap.

Linux already does the things these "solutions" are trying to solve.

Users can't update the base system without root, and applications should be installing dependencies in /usr/lib

dirtikiti··on We got 207 tok/s with Qwen3.5-27B on an RTX 3090
Yes, but they're claiming massive generation speed which you won't get on Vulkan. You won't get it on ROCm on that Strix Halo, either.

It's just funny they talk about vendor lock, and they only support nvidia.

dirtikiti··on We got 207 tok/s with Qwen3.5-27B on an RTX 3090
Yes, you can run Qwen on Vulkan or CPU. But you aren't getting 207t/s.

I just find it funny they talk about being vendor locked, and the only thing they support is nvidia.

dirtikiti··on We got 207 tok/s with Qwen3.5-27B on an RTX 3090
"Local AI should be a default, not a privilege: private data, no per-token bill, no vendor lock-in. The hardware to run capable models already sits on desks. The software to run those chips well doesn't."

So figure out how to run it on Vulkan instead of requiring the user to be locked into expensive CUDA cards.

dirtikiti··on Turtle WoW classic server announces shutdown after Blizzard wins injunction
So Blizzard is supposed to make a game that's fun specifically for a subset of players who think WoW died in 2010?

I hate to break it to you, but WoW is still the most played MMO on the planet, even after 20 years.

So it would seem like the MMO playerbase on the whole would disagree with you.

dirtikiti··on Clean code in the age of coding agents
I'd argue clean engineering principles (gang of 4 patterns) and clean code are not the same, and are most definitely not mutually exclusive.
dirtikiti··on Clean code in the age of coding agents
Applause.

I am in .net as well. The clean code virus runs rampant.

Swimming in DTOs and ViewModels that are exact copies of Models; services that have two methods in them: a command method and then the actual command the command method calls, when the calling class already has access to the data the command method is executing; 3 layers of generic abstractions that ultimately boil down to a 3 method class.

Debugging anything is a nightmare with all the jumps through all the different classes. Hell, just learning the code base was a nightmare.

Now I'm balls deep in a warehouse migration, which means rewriting the ETL to accommodate both systems until we flip the switch. And the people who originally wrote the ETL apparently didn't read the documentation for any of it.

dirtikiti··on Clean code in the age of coding agents
No, it's not really good.

It's a pain in the ass to work in, and it produces slow code.

dirtikiti··on Clean code in the age of coding agents
Clean code does not equal fast code. All those abstractions produce slower code.
